Chapter 2 - Marriage Contract
Demon? Ghost? Hallucination?
Yang Shifei was utterly shocked.
Was it possible that beyond the wuxia elements, there really were supernatural forces in this world, and he had just encountered one?
He turned around quickly, only to find that the servant girl from the Luo family, who had guided him all the way here, had vanished without a trace.
The dim courtyard was silent, with only the soft evening breeze blowing.
Cold sweat broke out all over Yang Shifei’s back, and he was covered in goosebumps.
A real demon?!
Had he been deliberately led here so that the demoness in the house could devour him completely?
Damn it, a honey trap!
Yang Shifei wiped the cold sweat from his face, clutching his rapidly beating heart, and cautiously began to retreat step by step.
If he was going to fight against a few female demons alone, he should at least be given some kind of cheat system first!
Where’s my ding sound? Ding already!
With a pale face, Yang Shifei slowly moved toward the way he came, hoping to leave this “demon’s courtyard” quietly without alerting anyone.
He didn’t dare to turn around and run, fearing that the moment he turned his head, a terrifying demoness would suddenly appear behind him, dragging him back into the house. So, rather than panic and scream, perhaps cautiously retreating was a more reliable strategy, even if it was just for psychological comfort.
Creak.
The slightly ajar door suddenly swung open.
Seeing an unfamiliar maid appear, Yang Shifei froze, nearly scared enough to turn and flee.
Who wouldn’t be frightened in a haunted house?!
The two stood there, facing each other in silence.
The young maid at the door stared at Yang Shifei, frowning slightly.
Yang Shifei didn’t dare to blink, fearing that she might suddenly pounce on him and start biting him.
Even if she had a seemingly beautiful face.
But in the next second, if her face turned into a gaping bloody mouth, who the hell would care about looks then!
“Are you a descendant of the Niu family?” the young maid suddenly asked, her tone icy.
Yang Shifei tensed up, ready to dodge and escape at any moment.
After a long silence, he managed to squeeze out, “No.”
“Never mind, it doesn’t matter whether you are or not.”
The maid sighed helplessly, then turned to the room and said, “Miss, this man is holding your old marriage certificate.”
Shortly after, a graceful figure slowly walked out, illuminated by the candlelight.
Yang Shifei forced himself to stay calm and not show any fear. He focused his gaze on the black-haired woman emerging from the room.
She was wearing a luxurious and exquisitely embroidered dress, which accentuated her slender figure. Her long skirt swayed, and her demeanor was dignified and elegant.
Her black hair danced lightly in the breeze, and her delicate and beautiful face seemed to glow under the moonlight. Her lips were rosy, and her eyes were cold, giving the impression that she could see through a person’s heart with a single glance.
Yang Shifei had no interest in admiring her beauty. Instinctively, he glanced at the top of her head.
No sign of sharp teeth or tearing wounds.
Was she deliberately disguised to look like a normal person?
“Young master.”
The black-haired girl suddenly spoke, her expression indifferent, “Were you entrusted by the Niu family to come for this appointment?”
Yang Shifei quickly gathered his thoughts and, pretending to be calm, cupped his hands in a salute, “I lost my memory and wandered outside, kindly taken in by the Niu family. Aunt Niu saw that I was unmarried and handed me this marriage certificate. Out of curiosity, I came here to see. However, my visit is indeed presumptuous, and I hope for your forgiveness.”
His heart was pounding faster as he continued, “I know this trip was reckless. This should be a matter between the Luo and Niu families, and has nothing to do with an outsider like me. But Aunt Niu was very enthusiastic. If Miss Luo is displeased, I will return the marriage certificate to Niu Village and not bother you again.”
Yang Shifei was sweating profusely.
He almost forgot his lines!
As for now, no matter how beautiful these two women were, he just wanted to get away from this haunted place as soon as possible.
Once he escaped back to Niu family’s village, he had to warn Aunt Niu and her family never to come to the Luo family again.
“No need.”
Unexpectedly, the black-haired girl waved her hand.
“Since the Niu family gave you the marriage certificate, it proves your character is trustworthy. Besides, I have the right to choose as well.”
She glanced at the bag on the ground and gestured to it, “Young master, you must be tired from your journey. Why not stay here for the night? Tomorrow morning, we can sit down and talk properly.”
“Ah, a man staying at a young lady’s home late at night…”
Bang!
The sudden loud noise made Yang Shifei jump, his heart skipping a beat.
He quickly realized it was the sound of the Luo family’s main gate closing… even the latch was locked!
“It seems my maid was lazy and forgot to close the gate.”
The black-haired girl withdrew her gaze, her tone icy, “Young master, what do you think?”
Damn, she really is a demoness!
Yang Shifei’s eyes darted around the courtyard, and he forced a stiff smile, “Then I will gratefully accept your kindness.”
The walls of this Luo estate seem almost three meters high, can’t climb over them.
He cursed himself for not keeping up with his fitness training.
“Young master, please follow me.”
The cold maid spoke, turning to lead the way.
Yang Shifei hesitated for a moment, but seeing that these female demons did not seem to have any malicious intent for the time being, he reluctantly followed.
The black-haired girl stood silently at the door of her boudoir, her gaze deep and unfathomable.
However, the torn flesh at the back of her head was slowly mending, until it was seamlessly healed with no visible trace.
..
The next morning.
Yang Shifei wiped his face and sat up with dark circles under his eyes.
He hadn’t slept a wink, fearing a ghost would knock on his door in the middle of the night. He was constantly prepared to play dead or flee.
But the night was eerily quiet. There weren’t any terrifying phenomena, not even the sound of the wind.
It felt like he had been mentally battling with thin air all night, leaving him bewildered.
“This isn’t right.”
Though he had spent half a month recovering in bed, his eyes weren’t failing him to the point of seeing things that abstractly, were they?
He clearly remembered the scene with the scalp splitting like a blooming flower.
Yang Shifei tiptoed to the window and sneaked a couple of glances outside, unable to shake his unease.
Was this demoness playing some game of cat and mouse?
But what would be the point?
If she really was a demoness, she could have killed him at their first meeting, instead of dragging it out until dawn.
Even if she had some twisted desire to scare him to death, she would have at least come in to frighten him, right?
Or perhaps the demoness wasn’t very powerful?
While Yang Shifei was puzzling over this, a cold face suddenly appeared at the window crack.
“Young master.”
Yang Shifei jumped, stepping back twice.
But he quickly realized it was Miss Luo standing outside the window.
“It’s me.”
Her clear, calm voice came from outside, “Since you’re awake, why not come to the main hall and sit for a while?”
Yang Shifei bit his lip and responded, “Alright.”
Maybe because he had spent the entire night lying in bed overthinking, he now felt a bit braver.
If he was in the hands of a demoness, he’d die anyway, so he might as well understand the situation before he died. Perhaps, if he spoke well, he might even find a chance to escape.
..
Later, in the Main Hall.
Yang Shifei sat nervously, quietly observing the black-haired girl opposite him.
Unlike their hazy meeting last night, he could now clearly see her delicate and beautiful face. As Aunt Niu had said, she was indeed a true beauty.
But he dared not entertain any wild thoughts. Glancing around, he noticed the large courtyard was empty, with no sign of the maid from last night. There were only two cups of warm tea on the table.
After they sat down, they talked about his recent experiences in the village.
The woman’s reactions as she listened were flawless, making her seem like a genuine young lady from a noble family.
“I heard from Aunt Niu that you come from a prominent family in the capital, but there don’t seem to be many servants here?” Yang Shifei asked.
“I prefer peace and quiet,” Miss Luo replied, taking a light sip of tea. “Too many people create noise.”
Yang Shifei hesitated, “What do you think about this marriage?”
“You should understand the rules of so-called noble families,” Miss Luo looked up, her beautiful eyes calm. “I’m eighteen and still unmarried, and my family has been urging me for a long time. But I don’t want to marry the wealthy young men my family recommends.”
“So, you want to find a decoy?” Yang Shifei’s expression became complicated. “A fake marriage to fool your family?”
A demoness worrying about family pressure to marry—could that be real?
“A fake marriage isn’t necessary,” Miss Luo shook her head. “If I can’t find someone suitable, I’ll simply leave and live a quiet life elsewhere. But if I meet someone I have a connection with and develop mutual feelings, getting married would be nice, and it wouldn’t strain my relationship with my family.”
Yang Shifei was bewildered.
So she genuinely wanted to use this opportunity to find a good husband?
“Have you had any luck in the past two years?”
“No one.”
“Uh, do you plan to settle in East City long-term?”
“Yes,” Miss Luo said calmly. “I quite like the local customs and traditions here. After marriage, there’s no need for my husband to interact with my family in the capital. The capital’s social circle is too chaotic, and life in East City is simpler. But if my future husband prefers another place, I’m willing to move with him.”
Yang Shifei took a deep breath, feeling a bit moved.
Who would have thought that even demons in this world could be so considerate, thinking about the needs of their future husband?
“But what if the man only wants to use the marriage to gain connections with the powerful and wealthy?”
“I would never marry such a man,” Miss Luo’s eyelashes lifted slightly. “How is that different from the wealthy scions my family wants me to marry?”
Yang Shifei chuckled, “You’re right.”
He felt inexplicably more relaxed and curiously asked, “If you do find a good husband, would you want to spend your whole life with him?”
“To grow old together, hand in hand, would be ideal.” Miss Luo said, lightly pursing her lips. “However, I have businesses in East City—a fabric shop and a tavern—so I might not have much free time. The man will need to be understanding. But if he doesn’t like it, I can find a compromise. Ensuring family harmony is most important.”
Yang Shifei was speechless.
This female demon is a kind-hearted wealthy little woman.
He coughed and asked, “I’ve asked you many questions, but what requirements do you have for a potential husband?”
“No matter how many requirements I list, seeing is believing,” Miss Luo tilted her head slightly. “Of course, the first condition is that he must be pleasing to the eye.”
It seemed she was making a small joke.
“You’re right. No matter how great someone seems, once you live with them, their true nature comes out. It’s not uncommon,” Yang Shifei’s mind raced as he deliberately asked, “Do you think I might be pleasing to the eye?”
He was self-aware. In an era with martial artists, he was just a frail, penniless scholar without any credentials.
In modern society, a man with his qualifications might be single until forty. In ancient times, he would be lucky to find any woman willing to marry him, let alone a wealthy lady.
Then, if she rejected him, he could gracefully withdraw—
“You’re not bad,” Miss Luo said unexpectedly, with a calm expression. “If you don’t mind, you can stay here for a while.”
Yang Shifei was stunned.
After all that back and forth, he was still staying?
He had no power, no wealth, no grand ambitions, not even a place to live or a respectable job. Was it just because of his face?
As he pondered how to decline politely, he suddenly had a realization.
Wait, something’s not right.
Yang Shifei stared at the beautiful girl sitting opposite him, lost in thought.
He had been thinking the wrong way. This demoness didn’t seem to have any harmful intentions. If she did, she wouldn’t need such elaborate excuses; she could have killed him last night.
Even if she was a fierce demoness, she had a fairy-like face, held property, was a genuine wealthy beauty, and spoke kindly, always considering the husband’s needs. She didn’t seem to have a bad temper either…
What was not to like?
Yang Shifei’s heart raced. He was drifting aimlessly in this foreign world, his life unstable. So why not just take a chance?
“I hope it’s not too presumptuous to ask… If we were to marry, what about the bride price?”
“?” Miss Luo tilted her head. “No need, I have money.”
Yang Shifei’s eyes flashed, and he clenched his fists in his sleeves.
Forget escaping—this is worth trying!
