Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Is This Considered a Gift?
"We Coordinators have suffered from continuous 'disasters' ever since the Earth Alliance took control of the New Star colony satellite in CE 38. They systematically and forcibly exploit, segregate, and discriminate against us, denying our internationally recognized inalienable rights to self-determination. Now, they have sabotaged our goodwill at the 'Lunar Conference' and even blamed us for it! As new-age humans, we are ruthlessly slaughtered simply because of the ignorant fears of Naturals. This is a continuation of the oppression we Coordinators have faced for thirty-two years."
The next day, after returning home, He Kui and Shi He were greeted by such news on the television.
On their way back, many people on the streets were similarly anxious, some angry, others confused.
"Thankfully, Chairman Clyne survived. However, it's hard to say if the Atlantic Federation is deliberately trying to smear us. Since then, the Atlantic Federation has killed many pro-peace factions in the United Nations, and the 'Earth Alliance' has replaced the 'United Nations.' I've heard that several professors in the major design bureaus have been assassinated, and a bomb was detonated at the Clarke Design Bureau."
As Shi He spoke, a hint of fear flashed in her eyes.
"It'll be fine; after this, they should clean up the spies."
He Kui reassured her, though his brow was furrowed. The recent surge in espionage activities had become rampant. The Atlantic Federation's spies could be lurking nearby, and the probing and assassinations targeting high-tech facilities and researchers might increase. Even in PLANT's military strongholds, safety couldn't be guaranteed since those areas would also be prime targets.
Moreover, the security level of their dormitory was not high. Once news of his rapid promotion spread, he could become a target, so he should consider moving. Yet, he didn't have enough money. However, if he became an assistant engineer, the housing subsidies and loan amounts he could obtain would increase significantly.
"Once I pass B-level, let's buy a place together?"
"Huh?"
He Kui's sudden suggestion caught Shi He off guard, and she blinked in surprise.
"If it's two of us, we should be able to afford it."
He Kui spoke earnestly.
"Mm."
If he reached B-level, they could live in a slightly safer and larger area. With a population of 500,000 on the colony, only a few thousand would be B-level, so they would have some advantages in housing.
"However, we don't have much money right now."
Shi He had been considerate of He Kui's feelings. Their finances were managed separately, and she had saved a considerable amount since she didn't have many expenses. Given He Kui's enthusiasm for making Haros, she guessed he was likely running low on funds.
"I'll work harder."
He Kui forced a smile; it was indeed a problem. With his current financial situation, accumulating debt could lead to bankruptcy. Of course, if he reached B-level, he could explore other opportunities, maybe even take on side jobs. Ultimately, safety was the priority.
"Don't push yourself too hard."
Shi He gently patted He Kui's head, her large, sparkling eyes filled with affection.
"Mm."
In the wake of the Lunar Conference, which had turned into the "Copernican Tragedy," the atmosphere was palpable. Both pedestrian and colleague alike seemed affected.
Even the previously bright sky seemed overshadowed.
Just then, as He Kui exited the factory, he bumped into a girl.
"Sorry!"
The petite girl rubbed her head and spoke softly.
"It's fine."
He Kui instinctively took a step back.
"Oh, it's you, He Kui!"
The girl finally recognized him.
"Yes, Miss Sule, aren't you off work?"
"No, I'm here to find you."
Sule then pulled out two Haros from her bag.
"These two are made by you, right?"
"Yes."
Since he wasn't using work time, He Kui didn't hide the truth.
"They're well made."
Sule raised her head, displaying a proud expression.
"Thank you."
"Then..."
He Kui watched as she extended her hand, confused.
"Give me one."
"Huh?"
"Don't want to give it?"
"That's not it."
Though unsure why she wanted such a small toy, He Kui rummaged through his bag and pulled out one Haro he had planned to sell.
[You gifted Sule a present, Information Engineering +10]
[Sule Favorability 55]
[Experience Bonus 0]
[Information Engineering D-level: (415/500)]
"Ah."
He Kui was momentarily taken aback by the new message that appeared.
Information Engineering wasn't particularly rare in this future world, but it was foundational knowledge. Even elementary schools taught it alongside micro-processing. To independently develop mobile suits, one needed a solid understanding of both fields. Such individuals were few among Coordinators; most concentrated on one area and collaborated on development.
With this new skill, He Kui found that he could handle some information cracking in the future, making it quite valuable.
But could this really be considered a gift?
"What's wrong?"
Sule took a step back at He Kui's overly delighted expression.
She merely wanted a Haro to confirm his progress, not expecting him to be so happy about it.
"Sorry, I just remembered something joyful."
"I see."
Sule didn't press further and instead focused on examining the newly acquired Haro.
Indeed, it showed clear improvement, and at this rate, he might reach B-level sooner than expected.
"May I ask, I saw your previous micro-operation scores, and they weren't particularly impressive, but this Haro seems to be approaching B-level quality, right?"
"Maybe I just had a breakthrough?"
He Kui hadn't anticipated Sule to be so perceptive, and that was the only explanation he could offer.
"I see. Can you deliver one to me weekly, then?"
From the craftsmanship of the Haro, she could gauge He Kui's ability. With his current progress, he might be able to assist her in development.
"Sure!"
"Why are you so excited, though?"
Sule eyed He Kui suspiciously.
"Is it that obvious?"
He was just thrilled to finally have a reason to give gifts. How could he not be happy?
"Never mind, just remember to give me the latest ones."
"Got it!"
After parting ways with Sule, He Kui felt a mix of excitement and anxiety.
He really had no experience with dating sims, and he was clueless about how to raise favorability. He knew nothing about what she liked beyond her name. Fortunately, it only mentioned favorability, which didn't necessarily imply romantic interest, right?
With those thoughts racing through his mind, He Kui hurried outside, realizing he was running late for his stall.
