Chapter 315: Chapter 315: Victory, but a Defeat
Being locked onto by twelve Daggers was no joke. He Kui quickly redirected four of the remaining Wave Shields to form a large barrier behind him.
"Director He, get back here!"
Seeing the twelve Daggers and around thirty Moebius units advancing toward He Kui, the captain was visibly shaken and shouted in alarm. If He Kui were to die here, he knew he'd bear some responsibility.
But his concern was unnecessary.
The beams from the twelve Daggers and the Moebius units rained down like a dazzling storm. However, as they struck the Wave Shield barrier, they were deflected as though they'd hit a solid wall, leaving He Kui unscathed.
With only six Wave Shields, though, he couldn't fully contain Rebirth.
Inside the barrier, Rebirth Gundam forced its way out, shifting from high-speed MA mode back to MS form. The intense transformation disrupted the electrical currents, creating a brief gap in the Wave Shield.
However, rather than advancing, Rebirth resumed its high-speed MA mode, redirecting itself towards Earth toward the coordinates Creuset had provided.
"Pursue?"
"His target seems to be the Atlantic Federation's mainland!"
Shi He, using a Wave Shield to knock out a Dagger's monitor, asked urgently. After all, Rebirth Gundam was equipped with an anti-neutron jammer. If it reached the ground…
The potential consequences of such an event brought anxiety to Shi He's face.
"We won't catch him."
He Kui sighed. He knew the performance limits of their machines. If he had a Freedom backpack, he might stand a chance. But with this defense-oriented unit, he couldn't match Rebirth's speed.
This machine was never designed for high-speed combat.
He had even tried to taunt Asher into staying, but that clearly wasn't going to work. He Kui wondered what leverage Creuset used to keep Gray in line.
He vaguely remembered that Gray was driven mad by a girl's tragic death, but the details were hazy. The whole incident was a minor subplot, and He Kui's memories of even the main plot points were muddled. Asher Gray's story was even murkier.
In retrospect, He Kui regretted his old belief that he didn't need to understand every detail of Gundam. If he had known he'd end up here, he would've studied everything meticulously.
Regretfully watching Rebirth fly off, He Kui unleashed the four beam cannons on his shield system, firing with pinpoint accuracy. Within moments, five or six Daggers erupted in explosions.
The sudden display left everyone on the battlefield stunned—this included the previously worried captain, the special forces who had shielded He Kui, and the two young women at his side.
"He Kui… When did you become so powerful?" Shi He's jaw dropped in astonishment, her disappointment over Rebirth's escape momentarily replaced by awe.
"We'll discuss that later."
"Su Lei, what's the status of our fleet?"
"Uh, the Laurasia-class lost four ships, six are disabled, the Nazca-class lost two ships, and one is immobilized," Su Lei reported after snapping out of her surprise.
"Not too bad."
They had lost about a third of their forward force. Countless lives were likely lost, but the Eternal remained intact, and the Atlantic Federation's positron cannons were destroyed.
Directing Iron Wall and the others to deal with the remaining Moebius units outside, He Kui reentered the ship's light shield range.
On the map, he could see that Oracle had breached Ptolemy's interior, with its twelve beam cannons tearing through the Daggers around it. The Daggers were no match for Oracle.
"What is he trying to accomplish?"
Creuset was still Creuset, becoming even more formidable with each deviation from the original storyline. If he had orchestrated Rebirth's escape to the Atlantic Federation, then he clearly intended to remain hidden within ZAFT for now.
Matthias had better find something. If Creuset continued to lurk within ZAFT, he would bleed PLANT dry.
The real problem wasn't the danger to PLANT's resources, but rather that Creuset's presence made He Kui feel deeply uneasy.
As Oracle advanced, Ptolemy was finally captured.
Yet, despite their victory, the mood was somber. It felt more like a defeat.
Leaving part of the forces on the Moon to reinforce Ptolemy, He Kui returned with the main fleet to PLANT.
"The Rebirth Gundam defection has been classified as top secret within ZAFT," Juole informed He Kui sternly. "Please also exercise discretion."
Juole's gaze held a hint of authority, though He Kui knew it was directed more at Rebirth than at him.
"If the Atlantic Federation reverse-engineers the anti-neutron jammer, how long do you estimate we have before they succeed?"
"Considering Aktaeon's resources and our former colleagues, perhaps one month."
Although they had built robust anti-reverse engineering measures into the unit, someone like V.V. wasn't to be underestimated. With the mobile suit in their possession, the reverse-engineering process might be quicker than expected.
"Only a month…"
Juole mulled this over. "Prioritize development on Odin's Lance, and put the cellular-level nanobot project on hold."
"I understand."
Though they had achieved notable accomplishments in this mission, He Kui decided not to push for recognition
just yet. It would be better to wait until things settled down before seeking credit.
