Chapter 19 The Game Between Moriarty and His Son
"'Shadow of Avalon' is a counter-ritual by nature, it can only resolve part of the problem."
After explaining the mechanism of the ritual, Shafiya pointed out its limitations, "Objectively speaking, the damage Star Antimony caused to Avalon by manipulating Drost to assassinate Sofia is actually far less than what they did by making the Knights kill one another."
"As you've mentioned, the Knights loyal to the royal family would probably be wiped out instantly. Even if Lancelot I were resurrected, he couldn't possibly bury all the remaining Knights with them."
"Even though Lancelot I is the founding monarch of Avalon, we are ultimately living in the present. His Majesty is neither a Celestial Marshal nor an Angel Envoy... Even if he were successfully revived, he would still be a mortal, and a mortal cannot meticulously control an entire nation alone. He would still depend on today's Knights and officials to govern Avalon."
Avalon is, after all, an extremely large and complex organization.
If everyone in the Round Table Hall were to be wiped out, then the whole nation would basically be paralyzed. Even if a new group of leaders were to take over, that too would have to be done slowly, batch by batch; it isn't possible to replace everyone all at once.
Merely defeating the invading enemy, foiling their plots, or obtaining decisive power like the Eternal Pope can only achieve "stability," free from foreign invasion, it still cannot solve Avalon's internal problems—Lancelot I can punish corrupt and greedy ministers, but he can't conjure up better ones out of thin air.
"Sofia once said that 'Lancelot' is merely an amulet to preserve the sovereignty of Avalon, the last chance to repair the royal authority eroded by Prince Lohar. Given His Majesty's character, he is unlikely to get directly involved in ruling."
"Moreover, being too close to mortals would only gradually diminish the aura of mystery surrounding the 'resurrected monarch'... and the rule of someone from the past would lead Avalon towards twilight. Thus, the future monarch of Avalon is still Little Isabel, and this is unshakeable."
Shafiya answered succinctly, "Even if all the Knights loyal to the royal family are dead, we must find a fraction among the remaining Knights that can be won over."
They couldn't forcibly extract a "more loyal to the royal family" force from this obviously traitorous group to serve as a transitional governing body.
Because everyone's hands were already stained with blood, there was no way to distinguish based on that alone.
And when she heard Professor Moriarty say that "the Moriarty Family is the only Founding Family completely unaffected by the Lohar Society," a new idea suddenly flashed through Shafiya's mind, and it continued to expand, becoming clearer and clearer—
—Was it possible to reclassify these ministers along the line of "whether they are willing to submit to the Moriarty Family"?
Professor Moriarty himself was a high-ranking member of the Lohar Society; he could undoubtedly represent the will of the Lohar Society.
They only needed to, on the level of the Lohar Society, differentiate Professor Moriarty from the leaders who obeyed Star Antimony, thereby splitting the Lohar Society into "Lohar Society loyal to the royal family" and "Lohar Society disloyal to the royal family." They could coopt some, warn others, and then punish a group... Once Avalon became stable, they could slowly settle scores with them.
"I remember, the initial vision for establishing the Lohar Society was to hope to control the royal family through marriage alliances like Prince Lohar, thus creating a government system favorable to merchants."
Shafiya's thoughts were clear: "Compared to being dogs for Star Antimony, merchants would surely prefer to support Aiwass, who also is a merchant and will inevitably become the Crown Prince. Therefore, the majority of the Lohar Society will definitely revert to your side."
"If so, just removing the influence of Noble Red on the Lohar Society and getting the 'money masters' to support Isabel again will force the Knights to stand with Isabel. Those Knights manipulated by Star Antimony will then be exposed."
"Even if those people were all hanged, Avalon would not have any resistance or fear... it could even further strengthen unity. Because essentially, they are using the lives of others as chips for their own benefits."
And since Aiwass and Isabel could trust each other as a couple, by making Aiwass the Crown Prince, this also meant that power was, in effect, being returned to Isabel's hands...
The more Shafiya thought about it, the brighter her eyes became. The happier she grew when looking at Aiwass.
Yet Aiwass simply sighed silently, exchanging a glance with Isabel.
...Undoubtedly.
Without realizing it, Shafiya had been controlled by Professor Moriarty.
Lawyer York once described Professor Moriarty as possessing "a wisdom as intricate and invisible as spider silk," and this was the first time Aiwass had witnessed in person how he operated.
From vigilance, to trust, to hostility, to relaxation, to revealing everything, to standing together... Professor Moriarty had hardly said anything, nor had he used any Extraordinary Abilities. With just a few words, he had drawn Shafiya to his side.
Shafiya, originally anxious and tense, had her restlessness calmed down unconsciously as confidence was instilled in her. She had initially considered fleeing to the Holy Nation with Isabel... Now, she no longer thought about such matters and even began to calculate "the aftermath of a successful 'Shadow of Avalon'."
Aiwass understood why she felt this way.
