Chapter 22: Chapter 21: The Three Clumsy Bandits
Faced with this situation, Officer Orlando was clearly frustrated.
Who could have predicted that the bulletproof glass used by this jewelry store would be so incredibly strong?
Ordinary bulletproof glass, while resistant to bullets, has its limits, which are not particularly high.
Under normal circumstances, with their Glock pistols using 9×19mm Parabellum rounds, a few well-aimed shots at a specific point would shatter the glass. The glass would lose its ability to transmit kinetic energy from the bullets to the back, rendering it ineffective.
This method had never failed them before.
But this time, the glass in this store was unusually thick and far more durable than expected.
Caught off guard, one of the officers attempting to break the glass was injured by a ricocheted bullet.
Of course, the New York police were no amateurs.
After paying the price of an injured officer, they finally identified the weakest point: the store's main door.
Unfortunately, the delay caused by the bulletproof glass had already cost them the element of surprise.
The robbers inside quickly noticed the situation and immediately threatened to kill the hostages if they detected any similar attempts.
With no other options, the standoff dragged on.
"What should I do?" Peter asked earnestly.
If it were just a group of armed robbers inside, even with guns, Peter would have considered charging in head-on.
During training, Shadow Spider had used his revolver to help Peter practice coordinating his spider sense with his physical reflexes.
In this regard, both Shadow Spider and his partner agreed that Peter was more than qualified.
So, guns weren't something he feared particularly.
His spider sense was fully developed—this wasn't just an exaggeration.
But with hostages involved, Peter felt paralyzed.
If any harm came to the hostages, wouldn't that make him the second coming of Mobius? — What kind of hero are you protecting here?!
23333
Cough, just kidding.
But in all seriousness, Peter was worried that if he tried to storm in, the robbers might panic and harm the hostages.
From what he knew, the UK didn't have the death penalty.
This meant that even if the robbers killed someone, the most they would face was a longer prison sentence.
It would be best to find a solution that wouldn't push them to the brink.
Officer Orlando said, "We were hesitating earlier, but since you're here, we might not need to anymore."
"Huh? What do you mean?" Peter asked, confused.
"We've decided to comply with the robbers' demands, providing them with a vehicle so they can leave the store. Then, we'll seize the opportunity to take them down," Officer Orlando explained.
"Wait, take them down? You mean kill them?" Peter was taken aback.
Officer Orlando nodded solemnly. "These are armed criminals who pose a direct threat to the lives of our officers. Unless they surrender their weapons, the only option is to eliminate them."
"Uh…" Peter was momentarily speechless. He suddenly remembered that this was the UK, not the country he was familiar with.
The laws here weren't the same as those he knew.
Officer Orlando didn't pay attention to Peter's reaction and continued, "When the time comes, we'll need you to intercept their vehicle. This is Spider-Man's specialty, right?"
"Right?" Peter nodded slowly, wondering when he had become an expert in stopping cars.
However, Officer Orlando's confidence in him seemed far greater than Peter's confidence in himself.
After finishing his briefing with Peter, Officer Orlando reported the situation over his radio.
Before long, a car was parked right in front of the jewelry store, and the police vehicles blocking the road symbolically cleared the way.
At least on the surface, it appeared that a clear escape route had been prepared for the robbers.
Further down the road, however, several police cars and numerous officers were lying in wait, ready to fire and eliminate the robbers on command.
This elaborate setup left Peter in awe, muttering, "Well, isn't this something."
The robbers inside the jewelry store, for some reason, decided to take the bait. After checking the situation outside, they actually stepped out of the store.
Peter finally got a good look at the three robbers.
Two were Black, one was White, and all appeared to be in their late twenties.
Each of them carried a handgun.
The leader, a Black man, had one arm wrapped around the neck of a middle-aged woman while pointing his handgun at her with the other.
The woman was clearly the owner of the jewelry store, Mrs. Kerr Cleve.
The robber holding her hostage was cautious, deliberately keeping her between himself and any potential threats.
The other two, a Black and a White young man, walked behind him. Along with their handguns, each carried a heavy bag, presumably filled with the gold jewelry they had just looted.
After all, this was a jewelry store.
The three carefully scanned the distant police cars and officers before quickly getting into the waiting car.
"Thanks for your generosity, ma'am!" the lead robber sneered as he shoved Mrs. Cleve aside after climbing into the vehicle.
At the same time, the engine roared to life, and the car sped off.
"Ah!" Mrs. Cleve cried out, stumbling and nearly falling.
Peter reacted quickly, shooting out a strand of webbing to catch her before leaping to her side to steady her.
"Th-thank you," Mrs. Cleve stammered, still shaken. "Spider-Man?!"
"Uh, yeah, Spider-Man—but not the one you know," Peter replied casually. "Alright, ma'am, I've got to go teach those guys a lesson. Take care!"
With that, he pressed lightly with his feet and leaped over ten meters into the air.
One web after another shot out as Peter swung rapidly in pursuit of the robbers.
Down below, the robbers' escape had marked the start of another bustling day in New York.
As if on cue, the wailing of sirens echoed from every street and alleyway.
These hapless robbers had unwittingly timed their heist with the start of the police officers' shifts.
With no other cases to handle, the entire precinct was fully available to pursue them.
"One, two, three… six. Wow, twenty officers deployed to catch three robbers? That's some serious overkill," Peter remarked as he swung after the getaway car.
Swinging through the streets was far more challenging than maneuvering indoors.
He had to anticipate sudden changes and obstacles, and the robbers' car wasn't making it easy. They were speeding and swerving recklessly through the city in a desperate attempt to shake off their pursuers.
After a while, Peter noticed the distance between him and the getaway car seemed to be increasing.
This reminded him of the Spider-Man games he had played, where chase missions required precise timing to leap onto moving vehicles.
"Hmm, not a bad idea. Let's give it a shot," he thought, smirking.
