Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The Dragon Song of the Smoking Sea

The visions came like a torrent. Draezell, atop the high tower, battled a larger dragon, ultimately forcing it into the sea. On a desolate island, he fought three dragons smaller than Vermithor, emerging victorious at great cost. In the eerie jungles of Sothoryos, he wrestled with long-winged wyverns. In the vast grasslands of the Dothraki Sea, he hunted great elephants. And in the wide expanse of the Summer Sea, he pursued and brought down massive surfacing sea monsters.

Finally, the visions receded. Draezell and Vermithor returned to reality.

Countless battles within the illusion had seared themselves into the young rider's body and mind. It felt as though years had passed, but to the onlookers below, it was no more than an instant.

Draezell slowly dismounted from Vermithor and accepted the clothes handed to him by Lynn. Vermithor, now disinterested in the crowd, scanned his surroundings before turning to roar a few times in Silverwing's direction.

"The ruins of Valyria are no place to linger," Draezell said. "We need to leave as soon as possible. Valar, you'll ride Silverwing and cover the rear. Use the opportunity to practice your flying skills."

Valar nodded firmly, wasting no time in mounting Silverwing once more.

The two dragons took flight, leading the group away from the ruins.

Perhaps due to the earlier battle with the fire wyrms, the area seemed cleared of threats. The return journey was remarkably smoother, taking only half the time it had taken to arrive.

The group reached the landing point without incident. Boarding the small boats, they sailed away from Valyria's cursed remnants, propelled swiftly by magic.

It felt as though some unseen force had guided their safe departure.

When the two dragons broke through the clouds and descended upon the Vaelarys fleet's flagship, Silent Lord, the entire ship erupted in cheers.

The Dragonlord had returned.

Crew members spread the word, and the ship quickly weighed anchor to rejoin the larger fleet stationed nearby.

As the main Vaelarys fleet sighted the dragons roaring through the clouds and descending upon their ships, the same jubilant frenzy spread through the sailors.

The news traveled like the wind.

No force could halt the spread of news.

The sighting of dragons circling above the Vaelarys fleet quickly reached Volantis, carried by passing merchant ships.

"What did you say?"

Berisio Maegyr shoved aside the slave girl attending to him, grabbing the messenger by his collar. "Dragons above the Vaelarys fleet?"

"My lord, it's true." The messenger, himself a nobleman, had been equally skeptical—until more and more accounts spread, corroborated by the returning ships' crews.

"What kind of dragons? How large? How many?"

"According to the ship captains, there were two dragons: one with bronze-colored scales, immense in size, and another slightly smaller, with silver scales."

Well-traveled and knowledgeable, Berisio immediately recalled the names of two familiar dragons. His heart leapt with joy.

The Black Wall nobility of Volantis had tamed dragons—surely this was the gods blessing Volantis's ambition to restore Valyria's greatness.

"Summon the Tiger Party senators! No, wait—go to Doran and have him bring out the Dragonlord's Crown from the treasury. Prepare a fleet immediately to welcome our new Dragonlord!"

Berisio laughed aloud, seemingly oblivious to the fact that the Tiger Party had just antagonized Draezell and had long been at odds with House Vaelarys.

"Inform our Dragonlord that Volantis is prepared to crown him Emperor of Valyria, provided his dragons fight for our cause."

"As you command, my lord."

Vessamah Palace

Lady Klifna Vessamah received the news almost simultaneously. She frowned deeply as the breathless Vagadu rushed into the chamber.

"The Vaelarys boy deceived us," Lady Klifna said calmly. "He did not sail eastward to chart new routes—he went to the ruins of Valyria."

"Impossible!"

Vagadu exclaimed, disbelief etched on his face.

"The ruins of Valyria are a death trap! No ship survives the Smoking Sea. Even dragons.Lady Klifna, have you forgotten the Black Dread?"

"I have not forgotten," she replied. "But the fact remains: the boy tamed dragons and is returning with his fleet."

She locked eyes with Vagadu and continued, "You understand what this means. The Tiger Party has already dispatched ships to greet him. If Draezell Vaelarys aligns with them..."

"The Tigers are delusional!" Vagadu paced anxiously. "With House Vaelarys's legacy, Draezell must know where his loyalties lie. Even Aegon Targaryen chose not to side with the Tigers—it speaks volumes."

"But we cannot take risks." Lady Klifna stood decisively. "We cannot afford the cost of the Tigers' resurgence or the outbreak of war. Triarch Vagadu, what is your plan?"

"I will dispatch envoys immediately," Vagadu replied. "Draezell is intelligent; he will see the logic of our position."

"Not enough." Lady Klifna's tone was firm.

"I have already sent word to Pentos. Prince Regio will inform the Dragon King on the Iron Throne."

Her gaze was steely.

"I trust that their reaction to an outsider Dragonlord taming dragons will work in our favor."
