Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Fireworm
"My gods…" A Silverblood soldier muttered as the creature's head slowly emerged. "What is that?"
The creature's segmented body was covered in a shell resembling rock, and it crawled out from the ruins like a giant worm. However, these monsters had lizard-like heads, with finely sharp teeth scraping against each other, making a sound that was enough to drive one to madness.
These creatures should have had blood-red flames burning in place of eyes, a strange sight, but to Draezell and the others, there was a peculiar beauty in it.
Rey, protected by his brothers, immediately thought of a creature he had studied before, but before he could speak, the monsters suddenly accelerated.
"Unsullied Ones, form up!" Silver Scorpion shouted, pulling down his faceplate. The Unsullied in his squad quickly fell into formation, their spears launching in unison toward the approaching worm-like monsters.
Without a moment to waste, Aslan and Amos quickly organized the remaining Silverblood soldiers and raised their long axes to cover the spearmen.
"Do not linger!" Draezell stepped into the formation. "Everyone retreat inland." He activated a blood magic technique he had mastered. The magic was simple: it allowed him to sense the fluctuations of blood around him, a method to detect danger. This was part of his defensive magic, Blood Sense, which worked alongside his other magic, Prophetic Blood, that sensed danger through changes in his own blood temperature.
Although the worm monsters' fluids were as hot as magma, they were still essentially blood, which Draezell could sense.
His bodyguard, Amor, lifted his polearm. Standing at seven feet (around 2.1 meters), he looked like a giant, his eyes fixed on the worm creatures.
The first round of spears had a clear effect. Several of the worm monsters were pinned to the ruins or the ground. The remaining monsters slowed their advance, though a few of the larger ones continued to press forward.
However, the spears soon lost their effectiveness. The rock-like shells of the worms were even harder and smoother than expected.
The largest worm monster dodged the last volley of spears. It suddenly opened its mouth, and a burst of blood-red flame erupted toward the formation of the Unsullied. Meanwhile, smaller worms quickly moved through the flames, attempting to break through the formation after the large worm killed the Unsullied.
But they were disappointed. The armor of the Unsullied shimmered with silver-red light, and though the blood-red flames scorched their bodies, they failed to inflict any real harm.
Nearby, the red-robed monk Malach had completed his preparation. The tattoos on his face flared with fiery light as he stretched his arms out and pushed gently. The flames stopped abruptly and then reversed direction, setting several of the smaller worms on fire, which rolled on the ground in a frenzy.
Silver Scorpion raised his spear and signaled the Unsullied to thrust. The Unsullied raised their spears in unison. Their silver-red tipped spears neatly pierced through the worm's rocky shell, followed closely by the war axes of the Silverblood soldiers, cleaving through the creatures. The remaining worms, resembling long serpents, were severed by the axes, and magma-like blood splattered, creating black smoke that billowed up into the air.
The worm monsters writhed in agony, held in place by the spears of the Unsullied. Lynn and Argo stepped forward in unison, with Lynn slicing low and Argo aiming for the head. Their longsword and the curved blade of the Arakh almost struck simultaneously, followed by the silent slash of the "Black Widow."
As if sensing imminent danger, the worm monster rolled, heedless of the other nearby creatures. It opened its mouth wide, spewing flames without restraint in all directions.
Then it stopped suddenly.
Argo's sharp Arakh blade cleaved through the creature's lizard-like head, while Draezell's Valyrian steel sword delivered the final blow.
The lizard head of the worm monster fell lifeless to the ground.
Seizing the opportunity, the group quickly retreated behind the formation of the Unsullied. In the distance, more creatures of similar size to the one they had just slain raised their heads.
Even farther away, a massive shape that seemed to stretch like a mountain began to slowly move.
Draezell focused his mind, clenched his hand, and activated the magic within their blood. "Everyone scatter, rally to the hills!" he commanded, signaling Valar, and each led a group to disperse, running toward the hills. The red-robed Priest wasted no time, waving his hand to release a torrent of flame, enveloping the retreating group.
The massive, mountain-like shape finally lifted its head. It seemed somewhat confused, scanning its surroundings before opening its mouth, revealing a throat that glowed like a dark red sun.
It was an enormous worm monster, magnified countless times. Its gigantic lizard head was ablaze with dark flames. Compared to its breath, the previous worm monster seemed like a candle near a volcano—a mere joke.
The surrounding ruins were instantly set ablaze by the dark flames, and countless worm monsters writhed in agony, burning to ash.
The colossal creature, now seemingly satisfied, swayed its head and returned to its previous position.
The group peeked out from behind the hills.
"What kind of creature is that?" Valar asked, gazing at the still-burning ruins with a hint of fear. Draezell, however, thought of something more.
Valar and Rey didn't realize it, but Draezell had once seen a living dragon. It was during a time when his mother was still alive, before Rey had been born. Draezell had accompanied his father, learning to manage the family's affairs, and during that time, he saw a dragon that bore some resemblance to the creature they had just encountered. It had the same long neck, the same tooth-filled head, and the same powerful flames. However, that blood-red dragon was filled with a true beauty, unlike the grotesque, twisted form of the worm monsters.
It was Caraxes, companion and steed to Prince Daemon Targaryen of the Sunset Lands.
At that time, Prince Daemon had been at odds with his brother, King Viserys I, and together with Corlys Velaryon, the "Sea Snake," they gathered an army, attacking and seizing lands on the chaotic Stepstones. They frequently visited the Free Cities to accept tribute from the governors.
Draezell's father had also invited Prince Daemon to their estate in Volantis under the pretext of his noble status and Princess Senira's name. His father had sent lavish gifts and 200 elite soldiers.
Draezell didn't know what his father discussed with Prince Daemon in private, but when the prince left, he had been quite friendly. He personally trained Draezell in swordsmanship and even showed him the Valyrian steel sword "Dark Sister," a beautiful and exquisite weapon, far more elegant than Draezell's own "Black Widow."
Later, Draezell's mother passed away shortly after Rey's birth, and Prince Daemon had flown in on his dragon to offer condolences. However, not long after returning to King's Landing, Daemon's relationship with the King, which had briefly improved, soured again. The prince was permanently exiled. During these years, the exiled prince visited the Velaryon estate many times, enjoying the hospitality of Draezell's family. Eventually, Daemon married Laena Velaryon and settled in Pentos, where Draezell's father sent a wedding gift.
Later, Prince Daemon and Lady Laena also visited Volantis and stayed at the Velaryon family estate. However, Draezell did not get to see Caraxes, nor did he witness the mighty dragon Vhagar, the largest of the living dragons.
Of course, that estate, which had once hosted both dragons and the prince, had now been sold.
Draezell suspected that his father's secret dealings with Prince Daemon might have been related to dragons. After all, his ultimate goal was to obtain a dragon and fulfill the family's long-standing wish. But he also understood that the Targaryen family, who monopolized dragons, would never allow outsiders—especially those not closely connected to them—to control dragons. Even though the extreme King Jaehaerys I had passed away, the Velaryon family still possessed dragons. It was too risky to take that chance.
Yet prophecies showed that Draezell must return to Westeros. As a blood mage who had mastered supernatural powers, Draezell understood a crucial truth: in the gods' game of chess, mortals were mere pawns. Even if he defied his destined fate, it would inevitably manifest in another form.
Unless he could somehow manipulate this fate and slap the gods in the face.
All he could do was hope that his father's past actions would bear fruit.
He was not entirely unprepared, though. If this exploration succeeded in acquiring a dragon, or a dragon egg that could hatch, his contingency plan would kick into action.
He could only hope everything went smoothly.
As Draezell was deep in thought, an Unsullied suddenly collapsed backward. The Silver Scorpion immediately raised his spear, creating a barrier between the group. "Don't come close."
The Silver Scorpion recalled that, during the previous battle, this soldier had been bitten by a dying worm monster.
The Unsullied made no sound as his flesh rotted, emitting a thick, scorched smoke. Draezell tried to activate his blood magic to save him, but he soon realized the man's body no longer had any blood.
All that remained were surging flames, and countless particles moved beneath his skin.
Bang.
A pustule burst open, revealing a small, fleshy worm monster.
Malak immediately reached out, gripping the Unsullied tightly. Flames surged from within, burning the worms hidden in the pustules, causing them to screech in agony.
"This is a fire worm!" Rey yelled. "I've read about these! They're fire worms!"
Draezell immediately understood what this was.
The fire worm was a mysterious creature recorded in Valyrian history, typically living underground or within volcanoes. It possessed the ability to breathe fire and grew larger over time. After the fall of the Freehold, some scholars who believed that dragons were magical creations speculated that these creatures could be the origin of dragons.
"But fire worms are supposed to be active in volcanoes or underground," Lynn said, confused.
"Look." The golden-eyed boy, Hoffa, tugged at Lynn's armor, signaling them to look behind the hills.
"It's… a dragon?" Draezell's eyes widened in disbelief.
Beyond the hills was another vast ruin, filled with toppled buildings, cracked earth, thick black mist, and rivers of molten rock.
Amidst the ruins, near a collapsed tower, they could barely make out the skeletal remains of a giant dragon, partially encased in the debris.
It was then that they noticed something odd about the ruins.
There seemed to be many newer items surrounding the dragon's bones.
"We may have found what we were looking for."
Valar murmured.
