Wasteland Rebirth

Chapter 29: Save the person

At this moment, Gu Hai had already boarded the vehicle. The zombie horde was closing in rapidly. He shouted urgently, "You fools, get up and get in the car! We're about to be surrounded! You clumsy idiots, are you trying to get us all killed?!"

In fact, the zombies weren't yet numerous, perhaps only fifty or sixty, but the real danger lay in the seemingly endless tide of zombies approaching from behind. Hou Shan, Wang Wu, and the others kept firing, but the zombies were impossible to kill in such numbers. The only viable solution was to leave immediately. At that moment, Chu Xiang's team had also boarded their vehicles. Chu Xiang was about to leap onto Song Jun's Qianjiang 250 when Sun Gaokang's desperate cry reached him.

"Help! Help! I'm trapped under this steel pole! You have to come help me move it!" Sun Gaokang's voice was filled with panic, for an old man, his teeth all missing, was staggering toward him, followed by an elderly woman. Their faces were grotesquely mutilated, with the flesh almost completely falling off, and the woman was dragging a filthy blackened intestine, holding a rusted kitchen knife in her hand.

Wang Wu, seated at the wheel, looked toward Gu Hai for instructions. Gu Hai, seeing that the zombies had nearly surrounded them, waved his hand and commanded, "Hurry up, let's go, it'll be too late if we wait any longer!"

Wang Wu hesitated. "But Gaokang needs help…"

Gu Hai slapped Wang Wu across the face, his tone sharp, "I told you to drive!"

The Mercedes roared to life, crashing into two female zombies, sending their bodies flying, followed closely by Hou Shan's BMW. Chu Xiang furrowed his brow and shouted to Zhang Hongbing, who was driving the Pajero, "You go ahead!"

Zhang Hongbing didn't hesitate. The road was blocked, and if they were surrounded by zombies, the vehicle would likely flip over under the weight of the undead. Stepping on the gas, he followed closely behind the BMW. Meanwhile, Chu Xiang hurled a steel pipe he had been using as a weapon. It spun through the air, striking the old man squarely in the head.

As Sun Gaokang saw the two old zombies lunging toward him, he realized he was helpless. With the heavy streetlamp still pressing on his back, he couldn't even manage to shoot them. Closing his eyes, he braced for the inevitable. Suddenly, he heard a thud. The old man in front of him collapsed instead of attacking.

Sun Gaokang opened his eyes to see that Song Jun's iron arrow had pierced the woman's skull. The kitchen knife in her hand clattered to the ground, narrowly missing Sun Gaokang's thigh by a mere inch. The shock was so great that Sun Gaokang almost lost consciousness.

Chu Xiang quickly approached and slapped Sun Gaokang's face. "Hey, wake up. Are you okay? Can you keep going?"

Sun Gaokang struggled to open his eyes. "Help me remove the lamp from my back... I'm fine, I can keep going."

The lamp was heavy, but with his strength, which had increased nearly fivefold, Chu Xiang effortlessly tossed the hundred-pound lamp aside. Sun Gaokang, only slightly injured, stood up and said, "Thank you. You guys have more honor than that bastard Gu Hai. Let me join you from now on."

Chu Xiang grabbed the 03-style rifle that Sun Gaokang had left behind. "Now's not the time for such discussions. Get on the motorcycle. It'll be too late if we don't move now."

Even then, it was too late. Over a hundred zombies had surrounded the three of them. Chu Xiang swiftly leaped onto a small bus, firing rapidly to take down several zombies. The rest of the horde followed his lead, and Song Jun, with Sun Gaokang in tow, seized the opportunity to break through the encirclement. Sun Gaokang yelled, "Wait for him! We can't leave him behind, he delayed the retreat to save me!"

Song Jun replied coldly, "Focus on yourself. Chu Xiang's not as bad off as you think! He'll make it out."

The zombies swarmed the bus. Though they couldn't reach the roof just yet, they began shaking the vehicle. It wouldn't be long before the bus tipped over. Chu Xiang quickly assessed the surrounding terrain. About eight or nine meters away, there was another bus, and beyond that, a delivery truck. Just a little farther, a Foton truck awaited. If he could reach those vehicles, they could escape the horde's clutches.

As more zombies gathered, the danger intensified, even for those outside the encirclement, like Song Jun. Chu Xiang had no time to consider it. Taking a deep breath, he took two steps toward the rear of the bus to extend his jump distance. With a swift push, he leaped, feeling the roof give way slightly beneath his feet as he propelled himself into the air.

With a thud, he landed on the second bus nearly nine meters away. The roof couldn't withstand the impact and cracked open in two places. Chu Xiang hastily used his palms to steady himself.

The zombies, quick to notice the escape, immediately turned their attention toward the second bus. Knowing he was still surrounded, Chu Xiang didn't hesitate to continue running, his physical abilities pushing him far beyond ordinary limits. Even the final leap, covering a last ten meters, was fluid and graceful.

Song Jun silently admired Chu Xiang's agility. This wasn't a simple long jump, after all. There wasn't enough space on the bus roof for Chu Xiang to accelerate.

Without stopping, Song Jun's motorcycle screeched to a halt beside the Foton truck, and Chu Xiang jumped down, sliding behind Sun Gaokang. Song Jun's bike roared as it pulled away, the two of them quickly catching up to Gu Hai's convoy.

In the city, the number of zombies was overwhelming. Fortunately, they had yet to form large groups, though scattered zombies still roamed the streets. But as the convoy advanced, a terrifyingly large horde followed behind them, making it nearly impossible to turn back.

"Don't worry. As long as you stay in the vehicle, you'll be fine," Chu Xiang reassured Wang Bin, patting him on the shoulder.

Wang Bin nodded gratefully. Chu Xiang had saved his life and helped him avenge his father's death. But Wang Bin, though a famous hacker online, was still just a sixteen-year-old boy, terrified by the apocalyptic chaos around him.

Outside, a horde of student-aged zombies—perhaps eighteen or nineteen—lunged at them. The bullets kept claiming their lost lives, the sound of wheels crushing their corpses echoing in the desolate streets. Once bustling and vibrant, the city now resembled a hellish wasteland. Abandoned cars, collapsed debris, flying scraps of paper, and severed limbs littered the streets. This was truly the end of the world.

Inside the stores, shopping malls, and office buildings, garbage was strewn everywhere. Occasionally, a well-dressed female office worker's head could be seen poking out from a window, though her former noble demeanor had long since vanished. All that remained was a soulless shell, a mindless walking corpse.
