Chapter 5: The Answer
Moon was in heaven.
She knew there would be competition. She knew that when she caught a glimpse of him running down the street after she and Yas picked up Sam. It was only a brief glimpse, but she saw enough to know that he was gorgeous. And now, seeing him up close, talking to him, holding onto his arm as she lead him to class, well.. she knew she had to have him.
She tried to ignore the thought. The attraction. Not just to his handsome face. Those deep deep eyes. Or that beautiful smile he would flash when he said something funny. It was an attraction of the soul, she was certain. Something about him just felt nice and light. Like no matter what happened, he could just wave a hand and it would be settled. It was a sense of safety.
All through class they talked and Moon was glad to see that he didn't seem to need to pay attention to the class to know what was going on, just like her.
When the teacher called on him, after failing to get them to stop talking for the third time, he just looked at the board for a moment, then gave the answer. And she knew, she had found a tutor. . . if she found a subject she actually needed help in. She was the only one out of her friends who didn't feel the need to study. Her memory was great, and as long as she meditated on it, she was certain she could figure out anything.
The class came and went and she was thrilled when he accepted her invitation to sit with her at lunch. She knew she had to move fast and get in there before Yasmin made her move. She didn't know who was the better catch between her and her beautiful friend, but she also didn't want to compete over a guy. If she could lock this down before it became a competition, all the better.
It was only when they sat down, after getting their lunch trays that she noticed that he seemed to no longer be as attentive on her as he had been. That was another thing! He was very attentive and it made her feel like she was the center of the universe, which is a very good quality to find in a person.
She looked to her right, following where he was looking aaaannd of course. Kyler.
Moon had heard the rumors of what Sam apparently did. Did she believe them? No. But, she had heard. She knew Yasmin had a kind of crush on Kyler the last time she checked. No doubt trying to be the popular girl with the popular guy. That was really important to her friend. Now with this new guy getting all the attention, she wasn't sure what Yas was interested in. But she did know Yas seemed way too pleased to hear Kyler badmouthing their friend, which didn't sit right with her. Sometimes Yas let pettiness get the best of her.
Moon looked back at her new friend and the look on his face was hard to read. She was normally pretty good at reading people, but she couldn't tell what he was thinking. Which probably meant that he didn't want her to know what he was thinking. Her grandma used to say if someone didn't have anything nice to say, they shouldn't say anything at all. Maybe he didn't have anything positive to feel, so he just decided not to feel anything at all towards Kyler? She didn't know and really didn't want to get involved if there was going to be drama.
Whatever it was seemed to pass quickly though, because just as quickly as he seemed to focus on Kyler he was now back to focusing on her, which was a better use of both of their time in her opinion.
All too soon however Yas arrived. And for the first time she wasn't sure she liked that too much in the moment. More eye candy and beautiful people around her was always a good thing, but she was enjoying the quality time and Yasmin could be a bit selfish sometimes. She didn't even like to share her homework.
-Vlad-
Talking to Moon turned out to be pretty much as enjoyable as talking to Sam. Different girls, different vibes, different personalities, but still cool people.
We talked until Yasmin showed up and it took a little finagling to make sure that no one was "hogging the mike", so to speak, since Yasmin seemed to just naturally take over whatever interaction she was a part of and I could see Moon withdraw into herself a little whenever Yasmin talked over her. Regardless, it was nothing I couldn't handle.
I caught sight of Sam leaving the lunch line with her tray before the two girls sitting on both sides of me and when she saw me, I waved. She smiled in return, until she looked over at Yasmin who put her bag in the only free seat available and then Sam just deflated and walked in a different direction.
"I thought you two were friends?" I asked the girl beside me with a raised eyebrow, keeping my tone conversational. She didn't need to know how little I liked the move she just pulled.
"Oh we are!" She said happily, like she didn't just essentially shun said friend, while leaning towards me a little. "But I'm a little mad at her right now." She said, grinning like what she just said was a perfectly natural thing.
I nodded in response and added a word to my analysis of her personality. "Did she do something to you?"
She furrowed her brow a little, probably wondering why I'm asking so many questions about a girl that she doesn't know I consider to be a lifelong companion. I mean, we shared a slice. The last one in the box, we both wanted it, so we tore it in half. AND, she let me take the half with the crust. It doesn't get much closer than that.
"She didn't do anything to me, but she did something I didn't like. So, I'm just telling her to stay away for now." She said with a roll of her eyes. "It's no big deal."
I nodded again and made an obvious show of looking around a little. Clearly, she didn't understand just how easy it is to get dropped as far as friendships go in this world.
"Well, I like her. She's nice. And, there are some assholes spreading rumors about her and it's making her sad. So," I stood and picked up my tray. "I'm gonna go join her, since I'm pretty sure she needs a friend right now." I lightly squeezed Moon's shoulder with my free hand and left Yasmin with her jaw hanging down. I have no doubt that was the first time she's ever been dismissed for someone else.
I made my way around the table and scoped out Sam putting her tray down and making her way to Kyler who had his back turned to both of our directions. I stepped beside her right before she could reach out and touch his back and tapped her arm, getting her attention.
"Yo, you alright? You look a little pissed." I asked with a wide smile on my face. Naturally, I already know why she's mad and what she was about to do and then what was about to happen. But, I've got no interest in letting things play out that way. After all, I gave her a nickname for a reason and I truly think it's time she earned it.
Sam took a step back from Kyler as she spoke. "I'm fine. Just need to have a conversation with someone," she said, and cut a glance to Kyler who had just turned around when he heard us behind him. I could see out of my peripheral that his face took on an amused look as he took in the both of us.
He spoke up before I could respond, which was fine by me, but also incredibly rude. "Oh shit Sam, you moving on to the new guy already?" He said laughingly, which earned him a laugh from his crew? gang? posse behind him. I've never liked extras who laugh at unfunny shit like they're listening to Richard Pryor in his prime. They always make my backhand itchy and fortunately for me, I now find myself in a universe where that type of instinct is greatly appreciated.
Sam and I both looked over at Kyler and as he met my eyes I instantly knew that this was an individual with no discernable survival instinct. Otherwise, he would've been able to see me clearly. But he couldn't. In truth, none of them could. Not yet, at least.
Sam took the lead as we both turned from facing each other and angled our bodies more towards him, forming a sort of triangle shape. Sam looked at him and was about to say something before she looked back at me and hesitated.
"Vlad, do you mind giving me a minute with him. Then," she looked back towards the table with Yasmin and Moon, "I'll come and join you." She had some steel in her voice when she said it. Like she was done running away. I liked that and I appreciated it. It was clear she was gearing up for confrontation, in whatever form it came.
I'm nothing if not respectful, so I took a big step back, ignoring the smirk that grew on Kyler's face.
Instead I stood back and watched as she confronted the dick that had been running his mouth and spreading obvious lies. I resolved myself not to get involved unless absolutely necessary. I wanted her to fight this fight herself. I only decided to come close to make certain no floppy-haired interlopers playing hero could interfere.
"You think it's funny to spread lies about me," she questioned the boy. He responded with a joke about them seeing a movie, only she was too busy to see it. One of the peanut gallery, the fat one, piped up with a joke of his own, and Sam was heated. She flung the tray that was sitting beside him off the table. I just sat back and watched. I don't advocate wasting food, so I'm pretty sure before this is over, I would put it to use.
"Hey, guys!" Kyler yelled out, getting the attention of the few people on the far side of the cafeteria who hadn't already been focused on the unfolding conflict. "You know that big billboard with that big ass dick on it! I guess Sam takes after her Dad." I will admit, that was a little funny. The delivery could use work, but it was a good line.
I watched as Sam shifted her stance. Her fist clenching. She was ready for some action. Until,
"Hey, Kyler!" The hero had to arrive. "Why don't you shut the hell up and stop being such an asshole," Miguel said, walking up like a big man.
Luckily for us all in attendance, I quickly walked between Kyler and Sam, straight up to Miguel and stared him straight in the eyes. "Don't interrupt my homies show," I told the boy with a smile on my face. Then I shifted so we were both facing Sam and Kyler and put my arm around his shoulder. "This is Sam's fight. And nobody," I looked at the fools around Kyler who stood up when Miguel decided to be a big man, "will interfere." The smile was no longer on my face.
I didn't need to look at Miguel to know he was frowning. My body was currently weaker than it should be, but I had more than enough strength to stop him from trying to squirm away. I focused on Sam alone in this quiet cafeteria. "This fool insulted you," I spoke to my pizza buddy not yet acknowledging Kyler's existence. "Spread clear lies about you," this time I did look at Kyler as I said, "since everyone who has ever gotten laid knows, you don't spread rumors about it if you ever want to get any again. Clearly, you're just a salty lil bitch, butt hurt about getting dropped." Kyler was now heated and said something that I ignored. I was already back on Sam. "I say hit the little bitch in the face and be done with it."
Kyler started towards me. No doubt about to throw his weight around, but I kept my eyes focused on Sam. Her fists were clenched and I was incredibly curious to see what she would do.
I didn't have to wait long.
I let Kyler push me, sending Miguel and I walking backwards a few steps as I kept my grip on his shoulder. I was more focused on the fist that immediately met Kyler's face right after he pushed us. It was a glorious right jab. Clearly, she could've gone for a hook, but it's also clear that she wasn't yet ready to truly hurt someone with her hands. After all, Kyler wasn't Tory and this was just her giving into the anger that had been building throughout the day.
"Oooooo's," echoed out throughout the cafeteria and I could see that Kyler, who was holding his jaw, as well as his crew behind him were all confused on just what the hell to do next. They weren't the only one's though, because Sam looked just as confused as them while looking at her fist. She's so precious. I'm pretty sure I made the next course of action easier though when I burst out laughing, which was not appreciated by the guy who just got punched.
Kyler, not knowing what to do with his adrenaline and looking like he wasn't sure if he should hit back, decided to take on the guy who clearly hyped up the girl who punched him.
I quickly took my arm from around Miguel and pushed him off into the distance as I continued to laugh at the charging Kyler, which seemed to only serve to make him madder. Good. An angry fighter is a reckless one. Not that I needed him to be calm mind you. He was full of openings. Case in point.
Kyler ran up ready to clearly throw them hands. He never got the chance though, because before he could swing his face was whipping to the side as a loud smack reverberated around the cafeteria. Is it wrong to slap someone who's trying to have a good old fashioned fist fight with you? Yes. Did I just do it anyway? Absolutely.
Kyler once more grabbed his jaw. Clearly more shocked, but also with a grimace of pain. Slaps hurt. The second that shocked look changed even a little bit, I hit him with a backhand. That one had him stumbling back. This time more in pain than shock. Backhands hurt more than front hand slaps.
All around us everyone just looked on. His friends seemed unsure of what to do as they looked at him and each other, although I did hear some oofs and ughs sound in the background. It's nice to see that people still empathize with others.
This seemed like a good time to establish a reputation. So, I spoke.
"Kyler," I looked at him as he shook his head to clear out the dizziness. "What are we doing here, huh? Violence is never the answer." I told him as I held my hands out with a look that I was certain looked innocent on my face. I'm pretty sure I pulled it off. "You're a liar and clearly a virgin who doesn't respect women. Don't add getting your ass beat on top of that." I ignored the snickers in the background. I just kept smiling at the increasingly uncertain looking Kyler. However, as soon as I saw him look at his friends, who looked back at him and urged him to fight, I knew what would happen next.
That's why, as soon as Kyler nodded in agreement to them hyping him up and let out a "yeah" and clenched his fist, an empty tray smashed him directly in his face.
The boy went down like a sack of potatoes and for good measure, I raised my boot before he could recover and smashed that down on his face as well. Then, I held it there pressing his head into the floor.
I turned to look at his wide eyed friends. "It's nice to encourage your friends, but maybe don't send them off to get their ass whooped?" I asked in a questioning tone, like I thought that they actually wanted him to get his ass whooped.
The key to dealing with minions is to first, throw them off balance, and next display an overwhelming show of force or violence. If they think stepping up isn't worth the pain, they won't step up.
"Violence is never the answer." I said as I stepped up on Kyler's face and then over him, using his face as step. Then, I walked over to where I put my tray down, picked it up, and turned to Sam.
"What I was going to ask you earlier is, where are we sitting?"
