Chapter 4: Chapter 4: You're Fired
As we drove off, I felt a flutter in my chest. The scenery outside the window blurred together - the trees, the buildings, the people on the sidewalk.
I gazed out at the passing landscape, trying to create some distance between myself and the man sitting beside me. But Adrian's gentle grasp of my hand shattered my composure.
His fingers wrapped around mine, warm and firm. I felt a jolt of surprise, and my heart began to race. I turned to him, my eyes wide with shock.
"S...Sir?" I stuttered, unsure what to say.
Adrian's calm, handsome face made my pulse quicken. His eyes, an piercing blue, seemed to bore into mine, making me feel like he could see right through me.
I was afraid of him hearing my heartbeat, which seemed to echo in my ears. The silence between us stretched out, feeling heavy and oppressive.
Finally, he spoke, his voice low and husky. "I hope you don't mind me using you as my fake fiancée."
He released my hand, but the warmth lingered, leaving me craving more. The sensation was unsettling, like a whispered promise of something more. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I tried to shake off the feeling.
"I think it would've been better if I had a quick notice," I said finally, forcing a smile to mask my unease. The words felt awkward, like I was trying to fill an uncomfortable silence.
"Why did he touch me again?" I wondered.
Adrian's expression turned serious, his eyes narrowing slightly as he waited for my response.
"I actually sent one. I asked Rachel to inform you. Didn't you get it?" The question hung in the air, and I felt a surge of anxiety. I hesitated, avoiding eye contact as I struggled to come up with a response.
The memory of Rachel's dismissive tone earlier that day flashed through my mind. "No, sir. I think she must've forgotten."
Here's the next paragraph:
"I'll look into it," Adrian said finally. "In that case, I'm glad I gave you a quick reminder." His gaze drifted away, but mine lingered, captivated. "After this, what's next, Boss?" I asked.
The conversation between Joi and Adrian continues to feel natural, and the tension between them is still palpable. Adrian's gaze drifting away creates a sense of distance, while Joi's lingering gaze suggests she's still drawn to him.
Let's add a bit more pacing to it:
"I'll look into it," Adrian said finally, his voice firm but measured. The silence that followed felt heavy, like a weight was settling between us.
"In that case, I'm glad I gave you a quick reminder." His gaze drifted away, his eyes fixed on some point outside the window.
But mine lingered, captivated by the sharp lines of his profile. "After this, what's next, Boss?" I asked, trying to sound casual despite the flutter in my chest.
"That's all for tonight," Adrian said, his gaze still fixed outside the window.
"I can stop at the bus stop, sir. You don't need to stress yourself with the long ride," I said.
"It's okay, take it as a treatment for comporting yourself," Adrian said.
He leaned back, his eyes closed.
As the car pulled up at my apartment and I thanked him.
Silence.
I exited quickly.
___
"I stormed into the house, kicking the door shut behind me. The sudden silence was a welcome relief after the tension-filled car ride with Adrian. I dropped my bag on the sofa and took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the day's events settle upon me.
'Emily, I'm home!' I shouted, but the only response was silence. I frowned, wondering where Emily was. 'EMILY?!!' I yelled again, laughing. Still, there was no response.
I walked into the kitchen, craving snacks. I grabbed a handful of chips, cookies, and popcorn and stood at the sink, drinking water. Suddenly, Emily screamed in my ear..."
"BOOM!" Emily screamed in my ear.
I shrieked, spilling water everywhere, mostly on my breasts.
"I neither had the strength to shout or complain, so I took the mop to clean the water. Emily stood by, still chuckling, as I wiped up the spill. "You're so mean," I said, playfully rolling my eyes at her. Emily just grinned, clearly pleased with herself.
Once the mess was cleaned up, I grabbed more snacks and headed to the living room. Emily followed close behind, still snickering. We collapsed onto the couch together, and I turned to her with a teasing smile. "You think you're funny, right?" I said, making an annoying laugh sound and rolling my eyes."
"I thought you said you can't get scared?" She teased me at my own words.
"Whatever..." I rolled my eyes again and munch my snacks removing my white long sleeve and tossing it at her face.
Emily laughed, still holding her stomach from her earlier outburst. She sat down next to me on the couch, her eyes sparkling with mirth.
"You should've seen your face," she said, chuckling. I playfully rolled my eyes, and Emily snatched a cookie from the plate. She took a bite, her expression turning serious.
"So, how's work?" she asked, her curiosity evident.
"Ummm... Crazy... Really really crazy," I replied, enjoying my cookie. Emily's eyes sparkled with interest, and she leaned in, eager to hear more.
For a moment, we just sat there, the only sound the crunching of our snacks. Then, Emily's patience wore off. "Gist me, am all ears..." she said, her voice dripping with excitement.
I took a deep breath, collecting my thoughts before launching into the story. "So, I got to the office, and Rachel told me I had a meeting with Adrian," I began, trying to sound casual despite the butterflies in my stomach.
Emily's eyes widened with interest, and she leaned in closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "What happened?" Emily's eyes were glued to mine, and I could sense her anticipation. I paused for a moment, savoring the drama of the moment before continuing.
"I told him about the Johnson account, and then...and then he dropped the bombshell," I said, pausing for dramatic effect.
Emily's eyes were wide with excitement, and she was literally on the edge of her seat. "What bombshell?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
I took a deep breath, the memory of Adrian's words still fresh in my mind. "He told me I'm his new fake fiancée," I said, the words tumbling out of my mouth in a rush. Emily's jaw dropped, and she stared at me in stunned silence.
For a moment, Emily just stared at me, her mouth agape. Then, she burst out laughing, the sound echoing through the room. I couldn't help but laugh too, the absurdity of the situation hitting me all at once.
We laughed together, our giggles intertwining as we struggled to catch our breath. Finally, Emily wiped tears from her eyes and turned to me, a mischievous glint in her eye. 'Tell me everything,' she said, her voice barely above a whisper."
I took a deep breath, settling in to recount the entire conversation with Adrian. Emily listened intently, her eyes never leaving mine as I spoke. The room was quiet, except for the sound of my voice, detailing every awkward moment.
I told her about the charity gala, and how Adrian needed a fake fiancée to impress his investors. Emily's expression changed from amusement to surprise, her eyebrows rising with interest. As I finished my story, Emily let out a low whistle. "Joi, you're a saint," she said, shaking her head in amusement.
Here's the next paragraph with a focus on pacing:
Emily's comment hung in the air for a moment, before she burst out laughing again. "Or a glutton for punishment," she added, still chuckling. I rolled my eyes, laughing along with her. "Hey, it's not that bad," I said, trying to defend myself. Emily wiped tears from her eyes, her grin still plastered on her face. "Oh, really?" she said, raising an eyebrow. "Then why do you look like you're about to bolt?"
I felt a flush rise to my cheeks as Emily's words hit a little too close to home. I did feel like bolting - bolting from the fake engagement, from Adrian's charming smile, from the whole messy situation. But I couldn't, not now that I'd agreed to play along. I took a deep breath, trying to shake off the feeling of unease. "I'm fine," I said, trying to sound convincing.
Emily raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying it. "Save it, Joi," she said, her voice dripping with amusement. "I know you too well.
"Ummm.... Never," I emphasized. "He's really really handsome but no way. Men are evil, I have healed but I can't let him touch me and marriage is too far." I emphasized the 'too'.
Emily grinned mischievously. "He has money, Joi..."
"I know, but I'm not interested," I said firmly.
What if he asks you out for real? And love you for real?
Here's the revised paragraph with more pacing:
Emily's question caught me off guard, and I burst out laughing. "Have you seen that guy?" I asked, still chuckling. "He's so cold and he's like 'Joi get this and that' " I said, mimicking Adrian's voice.
Emily's laughter echoed through the room, and she wiped tears from her eyes. "If your boss knows we're talking about him like this, you're fired!" she exclaimed, still grinning.
I shook my head, smiling. "The pay is huge, if not I would've given him the piece of my mind." I paused, taking a sip of my drink. "But seriously, Emily, I don't know how much more of this I can take."
Emily's expression turned sympathetic, and she reached out to put a hand on my arm. "You can do it, Joi," she said. "Just pretend to be his fiancée for a little while, and then you'll be free."
I nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "You're right," I said. "I can do this."
Emily laughed her ass out at my funny expressions.
Emily chuckled. "If your boss knows we're talking about him like this, you're fired!"
We laughed and teased each other.
"Here's the revised paragraph with more pacing:
Emily's laughter echoed through the room as we teased each other. "My boyfriend's attending a party tonight," she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Let's go shopping, style our hair, get drunk, and live it up!" She grinned mischievously, already heading towards the door. "Let's get drunk and live the world..." she trailed off, winking at me.
I rolled my eyes, laughing. "You're impossible, Emily." But a part of me was excited at the prospect of letting loose and having fun. Maybe it was just what I needed to take my mind off Adrian and his chiseled features.
"Okay... I need to loosen up a bit," I said, smiling. "Maybe it will help me ease up with my boss's handsomeness." Emily squealed in delight, already planning our night out.
I finished my snacks and headed to freshen up, feeling a thrill of anticipation.
