Unlucky isekai? (Warhammer 40000)

Chapter 21: Chapter 19 Disappointments

Despite the sheer madness of this order, Hector could understand what drove his master.

The Inquisition, by its very nature, pursued multiple, often entirely unrelated goals. Some Ordos fought heretics, others sought to solve the issue of temporal displacement, while others, like his own Ordo, focused on daemons.

Because of this approach, different Inquisitors could have diametrically opposed views on how to aid the Imperium.

So, while for some, killing a Living Saint was the highest heresy, for Rufinus Ullis, things were far from so clear-cut. Intending to capture and vivisect the saint, Ullis sought not only to understand how the principle of "sainthood" worked but also to find a way to replicate the process himself.

In the end, if successful, at the cost of just one Living Saint, Rufinus would create an army—no, an armada—of immortal angels, burning daemons with their mere presence.

Was the life of even one person worth the hope of ending the daemon problem forever? If he succeeded, he would be forgiven even for such a crime.

Inquisitors, like humanity in this universe, had no right to morality. They could do anything, as long as it ensured survival.

The only problem was that Ullis could fail, and considering the rarity of true saints, it would be an irreplaceable loss. That's without even considering the moral and religious implications.

The soldiers around them exchanged uneasy glances, unsure of what to do. On one hand, the Inquisitor's word was law. In the Imperium, few could challenge the authority of the Inquisition. On the other hand, attacking a golden angel of the Emperor seemed... wrong. Especially after it had just helped them survive.

"Attack!" Ullis barked irritably again. "This is just another warp daemon, daring to take the form of the Emperor's angel! Do not let it deceive you!"

This time, the Inquisitor's words hit their mark. The soldiers' eyes hardened, and their weapons unambiguously aimed at the saint.

"No!" Hector screamed internally, unable to move. His fear of his master battled with his desire to prevent the irreparable. His desperate gaze locked onto the passively standing saint: "Why isn't he doing anything?! Say something! Protest, explain that he's wrong!"

But the angel remained silent, indifferently watching as the psykers gathered energy, ready to attack at any moment.

A single tear rolled down Hector's blood-streaked cheek. Justus finally understood why the Emperor's herald did nothing. If he resisted, he would inadvertently harm those he was meant to protect! How strong was his faith and trust in humanity? And how terrible were they themselves, to dare betray that trust?!

"My Lord Inquisitor," a bone-chilling voice froze everyone in place just as Hector was about to shout something. "I urge you to stop."

The Inquisitor's apprentice forced himself to turn and stared wide-eyed at the calmly standing Grey Knight.

If there had been any sounds in the hall before, they were now utterly silenced. A Space Marine defying an Inquisitor's authority was something extraordinary.

Those who understood what the Grey Knights represented were utterly horrified by the unfolding events.

After all, the Grey Knights were a secret order of Space Marines, whose members had never fallen to Chaos in their entire history. Their order was created by the Emperor immediately after Horus's rebellion, and despite the passage of millennia, not a single case of betrayal to Chaos had ever been recorded.

As if that weren't enough, every Grey Knight was an even deadlier machine of destruction than a regular Space Marine. All Grey Knights were powerful psykers, and their combat experience was unimaginably vast.

And if a Grey Knight had chosen to side with the angel...

But the problem was that all information about the Grey Knights, like the Inquisition, was classified, so the surrounding troops saw him as just another rogue Space Marine.

The balance of power shifted again. Now the troops were eyeing both figures warily, and while a battle could break out at any moment, no one dared to make the first move.

Gathering all his resolve, Hector finally made his choice.

"Master!" His voice made the Inquisitor turn in confusion. Justus raised his Inquisitorial apprentice's badge high, causing even more confusion. "Don't do this! He's a true Saint, and we can't treat him this way."

"You dare defy me?" Ullis snarled instantly. "Who do you think you are? You're just an apprentice! Reconsider your mistake at once!"

"No!" Hector cut off any path of retreat, feeling an oddly refreshing lightness inside. There was no more reason to fear—he had only one path forward now. "You're wrong. This isn't a daemon, but a true Living Saint, like Saint Celestine and Saint Katherine! Attacking him is the biggest mistake of your life. To go against the Emperor's chosen is to go against Him Himself!"

"Traitor! Daemon-worshipper!" The Lord Inquisitor's face darkened with rage. "He's betrayed humanity by consorting with a daemon. Loyal sons of the Imperium, shoot this vile filth I once called my apprentice!"

And at that moment, as the Grey Knight tightened his grip on his halberd and Hector prepared to die, a commotion erupted at the entrance to the hall.

Pushing through decisively, new figures stepped forward.

The irritated Lord Inquisitor clenched his teeth as he recognized the newcomers. His apprentice, however, had the opposite reaction.

Hector looked with delight at Richard Meer, another Lord Inquisitor, but unlike his master, belonging to the Thorian faction—those who followed the teachings of Sebastian Thor and saw the Emperor as a god and humanity's only hope for survival.

Richard Meer appeared as a muscular man in his forties, with graying temples and brows, and sharp, piercing eyes. In his hand, he held a glowing blue plasma pistol.

Behind the new Lord Inquisitor marched his own retinue.

"What's going on here?" Meer asked sternly, but his gaze immediately locked onto the golden figure of the Living Saint. For a moment, Richard's face looked rather foolish, but he quickly overcame his surprise.

Before anyone else could answer, Hector stepped forward.

"My Lord Inquisitor. I must report that Lord Inquisitor Rufinus Ullis has made the erroneous decision to attack and capture the Living Saint who came to our aid!"

"Oh, is that so?" Meer's gray brows shot up. "Well, Rufinus, I see you haven't changed a bit. Always rushing in and making mistakes others have to clean up."

"What are you doing here, Meer?" Ullis spat. "This is my territory! What do you want?!"

"Just happened to be passing by," Meer shrugged. "Caught a distress call. And when I found out what kind of help was needed and where, I knew I couldn't stay away. And as we can see, I was right."

Rufinus gritted his teeth. He immediately understood the reference to the daemonhosts. Clearly, Richard had come here looking for dirt on his rival, but now the situation had become even more complicated.

"This is none of your concern, Meer," Ullis attempted to regain control. "This creature is a daemon, and any attempt to defend it will be considered heresy of the highest order. And the punishment for such a transgression is death. For you as well."

Meer's retinue tensed, but Richard himself remained relaxed.

"Rufinus, Rufinus, Rufinus," Meer chided patronizingly. "I understand what you're trying to do, but unfortunately for you, it's me here. With luck, you might've slipped away from accusations for capturing a Living Saint. But attacking a fellow Inquisitor and capturing a Living Saint? I'm afraid no one will understand you, Rufinus. And you'll have to attack, because I won't let you lay a finger on the herald of our glorious Emperor."

Only grim silence answered him.

"Holy One," Meer respectfully inclined his head toward the still-silent golden figure. "Please forgive us for this unsightly scene. Come with me, and I'll prove to you that there are still those among us who truly care about the fate of the Imperium."

Without a word, the Saint moved toward Richard, as everyone in his path hastily stepped aside, avoiding the seething Ullis.

Nodding, Meer headed for the exit, his retinue forming a corridor for their patron and his guest. Hector, standing to the side, sighed in relief, then looked sadly at his pistol. Fortunately, it still had a few bolts left.

After what he'd done, it was better to shoot himself than fall into his master's hands. Yet, Hector's soul was at peace—he'd done what he believed was right, delaying the attack on the Saint long enough for the Thorian to arrive.

"Wait," the room trembled as an otherworldly, energy-charged voice rang out. "I want this man to come with us."

Hector looked up in shock to see the Saint's finger pointing directly at him.

Taking the first step was the hardest. Under the weight of countless stares, Justus walked like a servitor to Meer, who watched him with interest, and took his place behind the Saint. Only then did they leave the hall.

As he walked behind the calmly striding Living Saint, Hector felt an overwhelming, profound gratitude. This being—if it could even be called that—had saved his life, even though it owed him nothing.

"Damn it!" Rufinus cursed in rage, glaring hatefully at his departing rival. Their rivalry with Meer had lasted a hundred years, and Ullis wasn't about to accept defeat so easily.

"This isn't over," the Lord Inquisitor thought darkly. "I'll contact the other Inquisitors. And I'll reach out to one of the Lords of Terra who owes me..."

*Crack.* Lost in his plans, the Inquisitor noticed the suspicious sound above him too late.

All he managed was to look up at the damaged ceiling. Earlier, a Slaaneshi daemon had been slammed into it by the angel, creating deep cracks.

And at that moment, a section of the multi-ton ceiling finally gave way and collapsed.

A blue psychic barrier formed around the Inquisitor, but how could it withstand dozens of tons of concrete?

*Crash.*
