Chapter 4: Side Story: Fell Through A Looking Glass
Sans was tired.
He was angry.
But most of all, he was done with this bullshit.
"YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT!!! IF YOU DON'T ANSWER ME IN THE NEXT FIVE SECONDS, I'LL KILL YOU AND SWEEP THE WORTHLESS PILE OF DUST INTO THE TRASH CAN!!!"
Oh, a trashcan? How fuckin scary. Guess he'll have to get on his knees and beg for forgiveness towards his humble and kind little brother.
Not.
"Hey paps, look down."
"WHAT?!? WHAT COULD POSSIB…" Sans made sure his ego driven, edgy little brother caught a good socket full of the one hand his older brother put right between where the taller skeleton had his Sans in the by his black jacket.
And then he flicked the vice captain with a single spark of magic.
BOOOOM
Papyrus was sent flying past the throng of terrified monsters, most of whom had more than likely never seen an actual boss monster fight a normal monster.
He halfheartedly watched as his little brother tore apart whatever passed as a ground in this strange void they were all in until he eventually stopped when his momentum ran out.
It was pathetic how many of them took a step back before standing still. And most of those dumb fucks Sans had seen in Grillby's, drunk off their asses, and talking about how many monster's they'd dusted.
And now they were scared when some actual violence happened?
Sans scoffed lightly before turning around and walking away. Well, as away as you could get in a white void you and your entire fucking AU appeared in after he'd gotten shanked by that scary fucker.
A shiver passed down his spine as he passed the human girls and the only moster he'd ever willingly called a friend besides Grillby, her goatly majesty herself; Toriel.
He paused as he stood parallel to the old man of the mountains; the king of all monsters himself. He took something out of his inventory and threw his royal badge onto the ground in front of ol' murder buns himself before continuing his little walk.
"I quit Asgore."
XXXXXXXXXXX
That was nice. No more stupid job holding him back. No one else to yell at him while he sleeps and recovers from hiding his AU from that abomination. Just him, his thoughts, and his portable queen sized bed.
This was the life…
"Sans…"
Fucks' sake.
Of course she would be the one to come. He even felt Chara and the scared weed right beside her.
BAM
OOF
"The hell's the big idea?! There's a whole fucking bed, why you gotta flop on me?!?!" The little red eyed hellion in a black and red striped sweater had belly flopped on top of him, again. She had his thick red sweater gripped tightly in her hands and was burying her face between his collarbones and jacket. "If you want a bed to yourself, then you better… get your own…"
He'd started off strong, riding the numbness that had prompted his little spat with Papyrus, but then she had to ruin it by being an emotional little squishy human and crying.
Sans could feel the tears that dripped onto his bones, quickly being absorbed by his natural magic before they could soak his clothing.
God damnit.
He put one hand on her back and pressed her tighter against him, allowing his green magic to flare in his sockets and along his bones, gently seeping into her trembling form. She melted against him, but it only made the keening noise in the back of her throat that much louder.
She'd died again. He could relate to how that felt. Especially when you least expect it in a pacifist timeline.
Toriel had made her way away from the large crowd in the distance to stand beside the indecisive Frisk. His eyes met hers as she winced down at the skeleton and human girl. Things weren't looking too good then.
Like he cared.
"They're scared." She said as she brought her other teenage daughter to sit beside them on the soft mattress and carried the small flower of what her son had once been. "And you most certainly didn't help with that little show."
Her voice was pointed, almost to the point of grating his nonexistent nerves.
Like he owed her a damn thing, let alone an explanation.
Sans let his eyes flicker out, along with the magic keeping Chara mostly in check, and laid back.
He had done enough for these people, he didn't owe them anything, let alone an explanation or some worthless pity.
She shook against him again, but that's okay. We all gotta face the things we fear sooner or later. And more often than not, it's just you dealing with it. She could handle it.
Bop!
A small human fist bounced off his skull with none of the force he knew she was hiding in that squishy body.
The fucking human, cus' she ain't really a kid no more, was crawling over the bed with the weed on her shoulder.
"If your not gonna be still, get the fuck off." She settled against his side and grabbed hold of his empty hand and started signing on his palm so he couldn't use the excuse of blinding himself to not understand her.
WHAT. HAPPENED.
"We got our asses kicked, that's what happened."
WHO?
"Someone you don't want to meet."
HOW? YOU?
"Fucker froze the space around me and put a fucking spike through my soul." Cheapshotting asshole. Big man with that fucking button o' his, huh?
FIX?
"Ain't no fixin', human. We dead." Frisk had that actual audacity to shake her head no against his shoulder.
How the hell was he supposed to fix being dead?! They fuckin' dead!!
It was as he was filling his nonexistent lungs with air so he could yell at the human nice and proper that Chara finally spoke.
"What about RESET?" A shiver fell down his spine at the mention of that thing.
How the hell did that thing mutate in their SOUL's? It was never meant to rewind time, just document it.
How the hell did DETERMINATION warp it so much?
"You can't anymore, can you?" Her hesitant nod as she hid her face again both comforted him and made him a bit sick.
Even that was taken from them by that handsy fuck.
Jesus…
"Sans." Toriel again. She sounded tired. Desperate. Like she was forced to exhaustion and denied rest over and over. Like she was on her last legs. He could relate, especially at the goddamn moment. "What has happened to our world?"
"We lost, woman. What part of that don't you understand?"
"The part where we were fighting to begin with."
His eyes blazed red again as he stared up into her own. His magic thundered into whatever realm they'd found themselves in and pressed against the SOUL's of every person in sight.
She didn't know him. A few times spent telling bad jokes with a steel door between them was less than worthless.
And now, here she was trying to tell him what to fucking do again?!
"Yeah, you right. We weren't fighting." She had the nerve to look him in the eye socket, and match his wrath with wary patience at least. It was more than most could say. "I was. Again."
These people were so fucking high maintenance. Oh, I wanna live and enjoy my life doing whatever the hell I feel like, well maybe they could take over hiding their fuckin AU for a change. And then come find him.
He'll be right here with an extra bed for em'.
"Sans…" Fuck this.
"The fuck you want, Toriel?" Her being near him was grating in a way he hadn't thought possible. Why the hell hadn't he walled himself off with bones again.
A shift against his neck reminded him.
Right.
The humans.
Fuuuuuck….
"I want to go home." Her eyes were tired from all the shit she'd seen. Her cheek fuzz was permanently altered from the countless tears shed over the children she'd lost to monsterkind.
She was a mess only just holding herself together, like the rest of them.
"There ain't no home to go back to." And wasn't that just yet another cheap shot from that fucker. Her sad eyes refused to budge even under his nearly endless magical power.
It was quiet for a few minutes. Her eyes reached out to the frayed rivers of PATIENCE in his own SOUL, stealing the red DETERMINATION Sans had cultivated for so long. PATIENCE resonated with the old KINDNESS between her own magic and his.
Ugh… Damn it.
He refused to let his magic flare blue. Frisk would be insufferable for days.
"Look." He sighed. She always somehow reached for the best part of him. The lazy punny skeleton instead of the cold hearted killer.
It was… nice he guessed.
"The guy who did this to us? Yeah, he picked a fight with Origin. Trust me, he's done for." His tone was smug, and he had every fuckin right to be.
Payback was a bitch, and karma always got its getback.
Couldn't believe that asshole was Origin. Sure, he'd felt the bastard's magic when he woke up from that butter knife using prick's little puppet act, and almost teleported away on instinct. But still, the moment Sans felt the guy got the other half of his SOUL back?
Yup. Not picking that fight.
No siree. Not touching that mess with a steel pipe.
"Who is Origin." Chara finally decided to contribute?
Then again, they were both always stronger than he could imagine. If not in body then in heart.
"That's… a pretty long answer, princess." His eye socket rose in place of a brow at the tired but assertive eyes of the formerly dead child.
DUMB. DOWN.
Jesus. Almost forgot about Frisky. She was giving him that look again. The 'pay attention to me or else' one that always got under his, heh, skin.
BOP
"The Hell?!" She'd bonked him again?! Why the hell was she pouting at him, trying to look intimidating and only making herself look like a chipmunk. "What's your problem, brat?!?"
NO. PUN.
"I didn't say nothing!" She must never know.
LIAR.
Ugh. Whatever.
"Ok, look. Pay attention, cus' I'm not going over this shit again." He allowed his magic to take solid form above them, outlining a red tree to 'dumb it down' for the newbies to AU. "The first thing you need to know, is that there are countless worlds just like ours out there."
"There are two types of worlds, alternate timelines and alternate universes." He outlined the branches in blue and the leaves in green. "Timelines are the what if's of every universe. The choices we didn't make every single day in another world. The ones where we had hot cats instead of hot dogs for lunch. Just small differences that don't matter in the long run."
He looked down at the two technical fifteen year olds, each leapfrogging through time in differing ways, who still refused to let him go. "You two and the flower have way too much control over the timelines. I honestly have no fuckin' clue how the hell you do it, and I'm pretty sure I don't want to know."
Neither of them had any kind of answer for him, he could see it in their eyes. He figured it was like his blue magic; it was a part of him and natural to use.
"We are one branch, and all of the timelines connected to us are our leaves." He wanted a nap, so he would have to hurry this up. He knew Toriel was paying attention, and he could see Alphys in the distance with some of her speakers. Little voyeur. Sans knew all of those cameras weren't just because Alphys was a paranoid nutjob.
"But there are too many other worlds in the same situation." He allowed the tree to grow and grow; more branches, more roots, and the trunk thickened until it towered over them like a mountain. "Too many to fucking count."
"And then you got Origin." The trunk had lost all of its color, turning into a white that matched his bones, while the roots had turned blue. "Him and his universe are the template for every other universe in existence, the trunk and roots if you want."
HOW. WORK?
"No idea kid, never really interested me." It wouldn't have taken much effort to figure out, especially since he had literally met the creator of AU's.
Demented fuck was weird.
"Anyways, Origin is not someone you fuck with, alright sweetheart?" His eyes bored into the two princesses' skulls, he knew these two hellions would eventually find their way out into the wider multiverse. Just hoped it would be when they finally had a chance to grow up in a more permanent way.
"There are stronger people in our little tree. Monsters who call themselves gods and aren't far from the truth." His bones rattled for a second as he remembered a few of those beasts and gods he'd met on some of his earliest trips. "But you do not fuck with Origin."
Toriel had been quiet, allowing the conversation to continue, but she needed answers. "Sans. Why does this matter?"
He offered her another of his patented cruel half smirks that sent most monster's packin.
"Because the fucker who killed our entire fuckin' world?" His grin was downright vicious now and he reveled in the pointed look Toriel sent both of her suddenly entirely too focused daughters. "Dumb bitch is one of the branches too. And guess who he just picked a fight with?"
The entire tree trunk and roots glowed a blinding white as another monster's magic broke through, his words were now a biting snarl as a screen came into view stretching across the sky.
And on the screen was what would have passed for a more 'tame' Sans, surrounded on all sides by twisted versions of all the people he knew.
"And we get a front row seat. Isn't this just great?"
