Ultimate Teacher

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: You Really Shouldn't Provoke Me!

"Aren't you afraid to mess with the butcher's daughter? Believe me, my dad will chop you up if you dare!"

This was the first thing Jiang Qin said to Fang Yan when they met for the first time. Years later, the two would still laugh uncontrollably whenever they remembered this scene.

Jiang Qin knew that the small room in the courtyard had been rented out to someone, but she had been coming and going so quickly these past few days that she hadn't even crossed paths with Fang Yan.

As soon as she got back from school, her mother sneaked up to her and whispered, "Qin Qin, do you know who's renting our place?"

"Who? A person, obviously."

"Not just any ordinary person."

"Don't tell me it's Superman?"

"You cheeky brat, how are you talking to your mother? Let me tell you, the person renting our room is a Chinese teacher from Suzaku Middle School."

Jiang Qin rolled her eyes and said, "So what? He's just a teacher. What's the big deal?"

"You really don't get it, do you?" Li Guiying got anxious, poking her daughter's forehead. "Haven't your teachers taught you the phrase 'a pavilion closest to the water enjoys the moonlight first'?"

Jiang Qin's eyes widened. "No way, Mom! You want me to date a teacher?"

"Date? What are you talking about, you silly girl?" Li Guiying raised the spatula and swung it toward her daughter's head, making her quickly back away. "Think about it, if we ask a teacher from Suzaku Middle School to tutor you every day, wouldn't that help you get into Suzaku High School next year?"

"The prime minister's son spends every day with his dad, but that doesn't mean he'll become the prime minister," Jiang Qin retorted. "I don't need any tutoring. School already gives us extra classes every day, and I can barely finish the homework!"

"No way, you have to listen to me on this," Li Guiying insisted firmly. "Qin Qin, you're in your final year of middle school now. Just one more year before the high school entrance exam. Do I even need to tell you how important this last stretch is? If you don't get into a good high school, how are you going to get into a good university? And without a good university, how will you find a good job? Look at the college graduates nowadays, they can't even get a hot meal, living off instant noodles every day—"

"Well, they're idiots if they don't know how to cook the noodles."

"You little brat! Do you believe I'll hit you with this spatula?" Li Guiying was really at her wit's end with this spoiled daughter of hers. "Anyway, I've already spoken to Teacher Fang. He's agreed to tutor you in Chinese. Your Chinese is weak, and this is the perfect chance to improve. Every point counts, and you know how crucial a single point can be during the college entrance exams, right?"

She swiftly plated the dish and said, "I'm going to make some seafood soup. You go invite Teacher Fang over for dinner."

"You go."

"Are you going or not? If not, no allowance this month."

"Fine, I'll go!"

After that exchange, Jiang Qin had no choice but to head over and invite Teacher Fang for dinner.

The door to his room was slightly ajar, and light spilled out from inside.

She gave it a gentle push, and the door swung open.

Then, she saw Fang Yan half-lying on the bed, asleep.

"Oh my god, no way," Jiang Qin's eyes widened in surprise. "This teacher is way too young! No way, no way, there's no way someone like him is a high school teacher."

"A fraud, he must be a fraud! He's definitely here to scam my mom, a clueless, uneducated middle-aged woman from this old neighborhood!" In her heart, Jiang Qin already labeled Fang Yan with a very unfriendly tag.

She also had some very frustrating thoughts about her mother.

Jiang Qin pulled out her phone, planning to take a picture of Fang Yan. Tomorrow, she would ask around if Suzaku Middle School really had such a teacher. If not, well, my dad's butcher knife isn't just for show.

The camera on her phone wasn't great, so the picture came out too blurry from a distance. So, she decided to move in closer.

Suddenly, Fang Yan sprang up, scaring her half to death.

To make things worse, she had been hunched over trying to take the picture. Startled, she lost her balance, and as her body tipped forward, their heads collided with a loud thud.

She saw stars, and fury rose within her like a little furnace about to ignite.

"I didn't touch you," Fang Yan hurried to explain. If Li Guiying or her butcher husband misunderstood this, things could get ugly.

"That wasn't touching?" Jiang Qin pointed to her forehead. "It's all red."

Fang Yan breathed a sigh of relief. So, that was the kind of "touching" she meant. For a moment, he had feared it was something far more serious.

"I didn't mean to touch you," Fang Yan explained. "Look, my forehead is red too."

"Serves you right. But mine's red, so you'll have to compensate me."

"That's not fair. This is my room, and you came in without knocking—"

"This is my house. We just rented it to you. Besides, I did knock. You didn't hear it."

Fang Yan knew she was lying. With his sharp senses, there was no way he wouldn't have heard someone knocking.

"I told you to compensate me. Did you hear that?" The girl's voice was clear but quite domineering.

"Compensate you? For what?"

Jiang Qin thought for a moment, then a brilliant idea popped into her head. "You're not allowed to tutor me!"

"What?" Fang Yan was completely confused.

"You're so slow! Didn't you promise my mom to tutor me? When we have dinner later, just say you're too busy with work and don't have time to tutor me. Push this job off."

"Got it," Fang Yan nodded. "I'll turn it down."

"Great!" Jiang Qin pumped her fist in the air with excitement.

"Great," Fang Yan also secretly celebrated inside.

Jiang Qin glared at Fang Yan as he continued to stare at her. "What are you looking at? My mom told you to come for dinner."

"Hey—"

"Who are you calling 'hey'? That's not my name."

"I mean, I'm your teacher. Don't you have any respect for me?"

"I don't believe you're a teacher." Jiang Qin snorted. "Even if you are, you're not my teacher. If you're not teaching me anything, why should I respect you?"

"That's not how it works. Being a teacher is a noble profession, part of an honorable community. I may not be your teacher, but I'm someone else's. Teachers like me, and many others, all work selflessly for the benefit of students. You should respect me and respect every student's teacher."

Jiang Qin thought about it for a moment, then said, "So, what you're saying is that other people's teachers are also my teachers?"

"Exactly," Fang Yan nodded.

"If you have a daughter in the future, would you give her money to spend?"

"Of course," Fang Yan replied. What kind of question was that?

"Well, I'm not your daughter, but I'm somebody's daughter—so, as a father, you should take pity on all the daughters in the world." Jiang Qin stretched out her soft, white hand and said, "Give me 300 bucks."

"You don't want to give it? Then fathers aren't that great after all? Not such an honorable profession?" Jiang Qin mocked as she continued to pressure Fang Yan.

"You really shouldn't provoke me." Fang Yan was getting irritated.

"What if I do?"

"If you provoke me, I still won't give you money." Fang Yan jumped out of bed and quickly headed for the door. "Let's go eat. Don't keep your mom waiting."

Jiang Qin burst out laughing behind him, calling after him, "You hypocrite!"
