Ultimate Teacher

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Vermilion Bird Takes on the Role of Bao Qingtian: With an Iron Face and an Unyielding Sense of Justice, It Can Distinguish the Loyal from the Treacherous!"

"What?" Fang Yan could hardly believe his ears.

"Keep pretending, go on." Lu Chaoge sneered inwardly.

She picked up the teacup in front of her and took a small sip, watching Fang Yan's performance with great interest. "Someone has accused you of beating a student. Is this true?"

"Something like that actually happened?" Fang Yan looked heartbroken, his face showing disbelief. "How could that be? I'm a teacher. How could I possibly hit my own student?"

"That's the information I received." Lu Chaoge continued, "Fang Yan, you owe me an explanation. Also, the accuser wants to press criminal charges against you—"

Fang Yan's face turned ashen, and with an air of deep sorrow, he spoke in a weary tone. "I didn't expect this. I didn't expect this at all—I've been working so hard to protect them, to keep them safe from harm. I thought that made me a good teacher, a qualified one. But I never imagined they'd treat me like this."

"I'm heartbroken. More than that, I'm disappointed. Why are students like this these days? Do they have no sense of responsibility? No sense of gratitude? What kind of behavior is this? This is like Dongguo and the wolf—I'm the poor Dongguo, and they're the thankless wolves."

"Mr. Fang—Fang Yan, calm down." Lu Chaoge tried to comfort him. "What exactly happened? What's the truth?"

"Here's what happened." Fang Yan licked his lips. "It's a long story. Could I get a glass of water first? Please, sit down, I can get it myself."

— Lu Chaoge felt a bit wronged; she hadn't even planned to stand up.

Fang Yan went to pour himself a cup of hot water, then walked over to Lu Chaoge. "Do you have any tea leaves? Just a few. I'm used to drinking tea; plain water just doesn't have any flavor."

Lu Chaoge looked at him for a few seconds, then threw her personal tea tin across the table.

Fang Yan opened the tin and took a sniff, clicking his tongue in approval. "Good tea. Dragon Well, picked before the rain, only tender buds. Priceless. Whoever roasted this tea is a master—not too burnt, not too tender. Just right."

Lu Chaoge gave Fang Yan a surprised look, thinking to herself, He's quite the tea connoisseur.

Fang Yan pinched a few tea leaves, tossed them into a disposable cup, and handed the tin back to Lu Chaoge. "Now, where were we? Right, the tea roaster's a master—neither burnt nor tender—"

Lu Chaoge drummed her fingers on the table. "I didn't call you here to discuss tea. Someone accused you of beating a student, and you need to give me an explanation."

"Right, right. About that." Fang Yan said. "This is a case of pointing at a deer and calling it a horse. I feel so wronged."

"Hmm?"

"It wasn't a case of a teacher hitting a student. It was a case of a teacher being hit by students." Fang Yan glanced at Lu Chaoge with a cool, aloof expression. "You probably can't believe it, can you? Even I couldn't believe it before today. Suzaku High School is one of the best private schools in China. I came here because of its reputation, thinking I would dedicate my youth and body to this prestigious institution. In the future, if we had kids—"

Lu Chaoge's face flushed red. She slammed her hand on the desk and shouted angrily, "Who said I'd have kids with you?"

"You misunderstand," Fang Yan waved his hand dismissively. "I meant, in the future, if I had kids, if you had kids, if we all had kids—I'd send them to Suzaku High School. As a parent, I'd want my children to receive the best education possible. But Suzaku High School is so disappointing. Students hitting teachers—it's unnatural, an outrage!"

"Who hit you?" Lu Chaoge's chest heaved with emotion. She knew she was being teased by this man, but his words were flawless. Even if she wanted to challenge him, there was no concrete evidence, and pursuing it would only make her feel more embarrassed.

"Three students from Class 9—Zheng Guodong, Li Yang, and Chen Tao. They skipped class to drink, barged into the classroom drunk. I told them to sober up before coming in, and they started swearing. They said when they're happy, they consider me a teacher; when they're not, I'm just a pile of crap. Am I crap? I'm not. But they called me crap, which is insulting."

Lu Chaoge fell silent.

A school board member had called her earlier, saying his son and two other students had been mistreated by a new teacher and that the teacher had resorted to violence. His son was seriously injured and was being treated at the school's medical office.

Even worse, Li Yang was the son of the school's director of education, and Chen Tao's father, Chen Dahai, was the Class 9 math teacher and homeroom teacher.

If all three parties stuck to their story that Fang Yan had hit them, Fang Yan would be at a severe disadvantage.

"Do you have any evidence?" Lu Chaoge asked.

"Evidence? What kind of evidence could I have?" Fang Yan replied angrily. "I am the evidence, and the students who hit me are evidence. The entire class is evidence. They cursed at me, and a student who stood up for me had his forehead split open, his glasses shattered. That's evidence."

"But those three students seem to be seriously injured too," Lu Chaoge pointed out.

"They were planning to hit me, but somehow ended up fighting among themselves in front of the whole class. I tried to break it up, but they just kept fighting—students these days, where's the quality?" Fang Yan shook his head in disappointment.

Lu Chaoge looked at Fang Yan and asked, "Do you know who Zheng Guodong's father is?"

"His father? What about him?" Fang Yan asked, puzzled. "In front of a teacher, there's only one identity—being a student's father. Should I treat them differently just because his father's the principal, vice principal, or board member? No, I can't do that. My conscience won't allow it, my professional ethics won't allow it."

"Do you even have professional ethics?" Lu Chaoge thought to herself.

Fang Yan seemed to realize something and asked nervously, "What's Zheng Guodong's father's identity?"

"He's the school's board member, our biggest investor," Lu Chaoge said.

Fang Yan puffed out his chest and replied firmly, "No wonder Zheng Guodong is so arrogant and reckless, a true 'my dad is Li Gang' case. Corrupt officials ruin friendships, mistresses ruin beauty, and bad fathers ruin their children."

Lu Chaoge looked at Fang Yan and asked, "What are you going to do about this?"

"I trust that Principal Lu will give me justice. I've never doubted that," Fang Yan said confidently.

Lu Chaoge was frustrated. How could you have the audacity to push this mess onto a woman?

But Lu Chaoge had no way out of this. As the vice principal in charge of school personnel, Fang Yan's fate was largely in her hands.

From Fang Yan's explanation, she knew he had a point. Besides, she was well aware of the type of person Zheng Guodong was.

The three notorious students in Class 9 were infamous at Suzaku High School.

But now that Zheng Guodong had been beaten, if they didn't settle this matter, the board member wouldn't let it slide.

After a moment of thought, Lu Chaoge made up her mind. "What's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong. I will investigate this matter thoroughly. Whoever is responsible will bear the consequences."

"I knew it," Fang Yan grinned.

"Knew what?"

"Suzaku has its own Bao Qingtian, impartial and just, who can distinguish loyalty from treachery."

"What did you say?" Lu Chaoge's face darkened.

"You're not as dark as him," Fang Yan quickly clarified.

"And he's not as pale as you."
