Chapter 16: Frantic Dashing
It took a while but they eventually got away from the spirits. "This place is haunted with ghosts too!" Ace yells as they finally have a chance to rest. Grim was on Xinyi's shoulder, a bit out of breath from using his fire. The girl too, panted, her legs telling her to rest, but she refused to sit in the unsettling place.
Deuce looked at the ginger, before shaking his head. "We don't have time to deal with them one by one. Let's go!" he demanded, walking forward.
Ace glanced at the other, glaring. "Don't think you can just order me around," he demanded, startling himself. "If you hadn't done something so idiotic, we wouldn't be in this mess."
"You wanna talk about who started it? It's cause you wouldn't clean!" The ebony countered.
"It started when that furball burned the Queen of Hearts' statue!"
Grim growled at the ginger. "That's what you get for making a fool outta me!" he yelled, glaring at the boy. Xinyi was about to argue when she heard something in the distance, causing her to freeze and listen.
Deuce shook his head, looking at the group. "All of you! Do you understand our situation right now?" he exclaimed. "We're all expelled if we don't get back with a magic crystal by tomorrow morning!"
Ace groaned and glared at him. "So stop patronizing me. It's really ticking me off," he yelled before being silenced by Xinyi.
"S-settle down you three." her voice was still shaky, but it was gentle and loud enough for them to hear. When they turned to her, she simply looked behind herself. "...I think I just heard a voice."
They were about to argue, to say she was just being paranoid, only to hear the subtle but foreboding noises that echoed through the cavern. "Won't… give… won't…" it was muffled and watery, as if strung together by lost thoughts. Everyone froze, gathering together to prepare to defend themselves.
"W-what's… this voice?" Ace asked, gripping his pen tighter.
The voice grew louder this time. "Stone… one… this… mine…"
Deuce shook slightly looking down a particular tunnel. "I think it's… getting closer…"
It didn't take long for the owner of the voice to appear, a squishing sound coming from every movement. A tattered red top was on it, but no legs were underneath it. At the end of the arms are only tentacles, the left wrapped around the shaft of a pickaxe, the other on the handle of a lantern. Their head beard, no face, a glass bottle with cracks, the same black liquid filling it. "Stone… IS MINE!" I billowed as it launched towards the four.
"I-it's here!" They screamed, instantly darting out of the way. The thing slammed into the wall before collecting itself and giving chase. None of them dared to face it, hoping to lose it in the winding path.
"What the heck is that thing!?" Deuce yelled as they ran.
Grim only screamed, clutching onto Xinyi for dear life. "Crowley didn't say anything about that! Let's get outta here!" he yelled.
Ace didn't dare slow, but his thoughts bombarded him. "It's so nasty! But didn't it mention a 'stone'!?" He said out loud, causing all to freeze and look at him.
"Stone… won't… give…!" The globe yelled, making its presence known once more. Everyone hid in the instant, waiting for the thing to leave.
"So there really are magic crystals left!" Deuce whispered loudly, looking at the others.
Xinyi was shaking and holding her chest in fear, not looking at anyone. Grim shook his head rapidly. "N-n-n-nope! I'm a genius but I can't beat that thing!" he stuttered out, his claws deeply indebted in the girl's shoulder.
Deuce looked away. "But we'll be expelled without it… I'm going!" he claimed as he left the hiding place.
"You've gotta be kidding?" Ace said, grabbing onto the other's shoulder.
Xinyi grabbed the boy's hand pulling him back to the shadows. "It's impossible by yourself!" she yelled at him. "It's too dangerous!" Tears were evident on her cheeks, but her words had held so much strength.
Deuce looked at her and shook his head, slipping his hand from her grip. "I cannot, under any circumstances, be expelled!" he stated, walking out into the beast den.
Don't worry when I argue with you; worry when I stop because that means there is nothing left to fight for…
