Chapter 26: Meeting
"Fuck, were you trying to kill me," she said rubbing her sore ass despite it being healed already thanks to her shifter constitution.
"Only your ass," he chuckled as they walked.
"Please, you loved it just as much as our wolves," said Dean ignoring her glare as he pulled her close and planted a wet kiss on her cheek.
"Says you," Leah grumbled, wiping her face.
"Next time don't make me wait so long," said Dean unapologetically.
"Why don't you tell me why we're having a meeting over the weekend," said Leah, changing the subject.
"It's about what Paul and I found, and it's already been delayed long enough," said Dean.
"Then why didn't you call one as soon as you got back?" asked Leah.
"I was distracted by someone," Dean grinned.
Leah blushed, and stammered, "You shouldn't be so irresponsible."
"I thought I was very responsible," came Dean's innuendo-laced response, eyebrows moving suggestively.
"God, do you ever stop," she sighed.
"I think we both know I don't," Dean grinned which Leah matched unable to help herself, "Yeah, you, me, and my ass," she said, and they laughed.
...
Everyone gathered at Sam's and Emily's, which became the de facto meeting place due to the amazing food she always had on hand for everyone.
"Alright, let's start with what Paul and I found in Seattle," said Dean, explaining everything that happened.
"Why don't we just give them Bella," said Leah.
"That's what I said," mumbled Paul.
"Over my dead body," growled Jake.
Leah sneered, "That can be arranged."
"Leah," Emily gasped, "You don't mean that."
"Sure I do," said Leah defiantly.
"You can..." Jake went on before getting cut off by Dean.
"Alright already!" exclaimed Dean, preventing any further escalation.
"Let's get one thing straight, I don't see a scenario where the army isn't used either to wipe out the Cullens, us, or everybody in this town. They're coming and we need to prepare. This is more than just Bella, she's just the easy target to strike at, if anything the Cullens are the main goal but with us hampering her, we're likely just as good an alternative as anyone else, not to mention a town of humans to feast on," said Dean.
"Need more training, and not everyone here has faced a vamp yet," said Sam.
"I'll see what I can do about the vamp, in the meantime we need round-the-clock patrols watching the Seattle border, guard dogs aren't going to cut it anymore," said Dean.
"I can draw up a schedule," Kim offered, wanting to feel useful.
"Sounds good to me," said Dean.
A proud Jared rubbed her arm affectionately.
"Count me out, I need to guard Bella's house," said Jake, making Embry and Quil cringe.
"You insolent little..." Leah began only to get interrupted by Dean, who put his hand up silencing anyone else from lashing out.
He slowly walked towards Jake and looked him right in the eyes.
"I'm going to tell you this once and only once, if you keep this obsessive shit up over the safety of the pack, of your brothers, of your family, and tribe, I'll make you watch as I tear out her throat," Dean warned.
Jake glared back rebelliously, teeth and fists clenched, but offered no further challenge, for as much as he wanted to strike him, his inner wolf's instincts were screaming at him to back down.
"Take note, Kim, Jake will take over for anyone who needs a break from patrol, and so help me if I find you guarding Bella instead," said Dean.
"Okay," Kim eeped as Jake scowled.
Walking away Dean ended the meeting.
"Man, what's wrong with you, why can't you cool it?" asked Quil in a hushed tone.
"Yeah man, you know we got your back, but you make it really hard sometimes," said Embry.
"You know how I feel about Bella," Jaked snapped.
"Yeah, but you still haven't explained why," said Quil, "I mean, she's pretty sure, but what do you really know about her? You didn't even know she was hanging out with the leeches until you became a wolf."
Jake scowled, unable to think of anything on the spot, "I know what I need to know," and stormed off.
"That's not going to end well," said Quil.
"Tell me something I don't know," said Embry.
"You're not as funny as you think you are," said Quil with a deadpanned expression.
Embry scoffed, "No need to lie because you can't come up with anything, I'm hilarious."
Quil rolled his eyes.
...
"Hey Dean, how hard is it to fight vampires?" asked Seth curiously.
"It can be anywhere from easy to very depending on the individual's skill or gift," said Dean.
"Not that you need to worry about it," said Leah.
Seth's brows scrunched together, "What do you mean?"
"If you think for one minute me or mom will let you go out into a deadly fight, you got another thing coming," said Leah.
"What, but that's not fair, I'm part of the pack too, tell her Dean," Seth complained.
"Uh," Put in a tough spot, Dean eyes rapidly searched for an escape, "Oh hey," he waved to a random dude he didn't know, "I've been meaning to talk to you, sorry guys, I'll catch you later," he said power walking away.
Leah snorted, "Coward," halting his foot midsep.
Rotating back around, he closed the gap between them.
"If Seth needs to fight, he will fight, he will be trained to do so and I'll make damn sure he's ready when he goes, end of story," said Dean, walking away angrily.
Seth grinned as Leah seethed at being undermined by her significant other.
Neither one of them looking forward to the ensuing fight coming their way back at home.
...
Taking time to himself, Dean does a patrol and plays with the dogs before heading home for the evening.
"I see you're back," said Leah with crossed arms, "Come to apologize?"
Dean sighed, "Sorry our brother might be needed," he said walking to the kitchen to grab a drink.
"You bastard, how can you say that to me, especially after we just lost our father," said a distraught Leah, wiping her eyes.
"If it makes you feel any better, the only time we'll need him is likely when we're all doomed to die anyway," said Dean nonchalantly.
"It doesn't... Wait what?" asked a confused Leah.
"You need to stop letting your emotions get to you," said Dean taking a sip, "I said Seth will only be allowed to fight if needed, and that basically means we're fucked anyways."
"Oh... I still don't like it," said Leah trying to keep what little face she may have left.
"You shouldn't," said Dean.
"I'm still mad at you though," grumbled Leah.
"For what?" asked Dean.
"You shouldn't have said that you should have..." she trailed off as she realized what she was saying.
"Lie to you?" questioned Dean, finishing her thought.
She looked down in shame, thinking of how proud she'd been of his stance on never lying, and here she was wishing he would have.
"It's true what they say, women are crazy," mumbled Deam, setting his drink down.
Getting ready for bed, they both lay down, neither interested in doing anything for what seemed like the first time in their lives.
Feeling like the awkward atmosphere was sophisticating her, she apologized, "I'm sorry."
Dean rolled to his side and pulled her in, "Good night Leah."
She curled up in his arms, wiping a stray tear, "Good night Dean."
