Chapter 11: Engagement
In the kitchen, Dean plated the burger and fries with homemade dip, poured a couple of cokes into a cup with ice, and went to wake Leah.
"Leah, time to get up, day isn't over yet and lunch is ready," said Dean, gently shaking her.
"Mmm, five more minutes," said Leah.
"No can do, food will get cold, and you don't want to mess up your sleep schedule do you? Come on Leah, I made burgers and fries, get up, get dressed, warmly, 'cause I'm taking you out after, and bring an empty backpack," said Dean.
"Fine," she said begrudgingly, sliding off the bed.
.
"You made this?" asked Leah, sitting in front of the tasty-looking burger.
"Yep," said Dean eating his own.
Taking a bite, she found it surprisingly good.
"When did you learn to make such good food?" asked Leah taking another bite.
"Making burgers isn't that hard. You know I live on my own, I know how to make things, how to follow a recipe. What did you think I ate, raw meat as a wolf or something?" asked Dean, as Leah avoided his eyes.
"Wooow, you did think that, wow, just wow," said Dean melodramatically.
"Oh come on, I know about the vampire thing, what was I supposed to think?" asked Leah.
"You've seen me eating food, I cooked you fish not long ago," said Dean deadpanned.
"Over a campfire," Leah whispered under her breath.
"I spiced it!" said Dean bitterly.
"If you say so dear," said Leah.
"Hey, you said it was good," said Dean looking offended.
Leah grinned, "It was, I'm just playing with you."
"As for the vampire thing, eating vampires fills an innate hunger I can't control, and at most, it lessens it, I assume it's like the vampire's thirst," said Dean somberly.
"Is it an issue?" asked Leah after a moment.
"Not yet, though it could be in the future. I guess the spirits are determined to end the vampires through my bloodline, even if it means forcing us to seek them out. Let's move on to happier notes, how's your revenge plan or whatever going with those girls?" he asks, changing the subject.
"You call that a happier note?" she asked with scrunched brows.
"Not exactly what I meant," mumbled Dean realizing his mistake.
They continued to banter and talk while finishing their meals.
"You got a backpack?" asked Dean, putting the dishes away.
"I do," said Leah.
"Here let me see it," said Dean, putting rope, a knife, some sandwiches he made earlier, and something else in the side pocket when she wasn't looking.
"Okay?" said Leah, "Where are we going?"
"You'll see, it's one of my favorite spots," said Dean.
"And you're only showing me now?" asked Leah.
"It isn't exactly close, and now that we know you aren't afraid of riding wolf me, we can go," said Dean.
"I don't know, last time was fun but even with you going slow it was tough holding on," said Leah.
"I know, hence the rope," said Dean.
Entering the woods, he took out the rope and knife, "Here hold this," said Dean giving her the knife.
"And what's this for?" asked Leah.
"To cut any excess rope," said Dean tying it to her waist.
"Watch, this is how you need to tie it, you'll throw it around my neck and then tie it like this, did you get it?" questioned Dean.
"Yeah, I think so," said Leah.
"Show me, I don't want you falling off, I plan on going fast, and you might not be able to warn me in time if something goes wrong," said Dean.
She recreates the knot with little issue.
"Good, you ready?" asked Dean.
"Where did you even learn this? I thought you were too busy being a wolf," asked Leah.
"From elders and hunters instead of school since I was going into the woods all the time, I learned a bit here and there about what I might need to know," said Dean.
"Makes sense I suppose," said Leah.
"Yeah, don't forget to grab my clothes, and pull the rope tight, it won't bother me, I want you safe," said Dean.
"Got it, now hurry up, and let's see this place," said Leah excitedly.
"Remember to stay low when we run in the woods," he said shifting, plopping down to let her put the rope on.
Getting situated on top of him, she ties herself off, "Heh, we should think about getting a saddle made."
He shakes his body like a dog out of water making her yelp as she holds on, "Hey! I was only kidding... mostly," she giggles as he shakes again.
"Stop that, the knots are working fine, I'm ready whenever you are," she said petting him. Laughing when he lifts his head appreciatively for more scratches behind his ear.
"Like that do you, maybe I should spend the day petting you, would you like that?" she cooed.
Shaking out of his hypnotic state, he snorts, giving her a side eye before taking off.
She loved the speed of it, the heart pumping adrenaline coursing through her veins, the wind in her hair. Screaming when he jumped off a small ledge and then laughing excitedly upon landing.
Spirits did she wish it was her running, she sighed at the thought as he began to slow.
Coming to a stop, He plopped down inviting her to get off.
"This the place? I expected more," said Leah untying the rope.
Dean snorted in his golden form, patiently waiting for her to free herself.
Sliding off him, he shifted back, "Clothes please."
"I don't know, I think I prefer this," said Leah ogling him.
"Only if you join me," he smirked, holding out his hand.
"Way too cold for me, maybe in the summer," said Leah, giving him his clothes.
"I'll remember that, come on, it's just through here," said Dean putting on the backpack and taking her hand.
Stepping out onto a sunlit hidden beach he found years ago. Waves crashed against a protective rocky outcrop as birds flew overhead, and seals swam. Whales blowing farther out was a welcome surprise.
"This place is amazing," said Leah in awe.
"Told you, it's a nice little cove I happen to stumble upon during my travels outside, at first I thought I scared everything away when I stepped out in wolf form, but when next I visited the place they were all back," said Dean.
Walking hand in hand along the beach, they conversed, telling the occasional funny story or joke, and pointing out interesting wildlife. One cute curious baby seal waddled too close as a none-to-please mother bellowed and hissed at them, slapping her fore-flippers against her body as a warning, leaving a disappointed Leah who wanted nothing more than to pet it but left well enough alone.
Finding the perfect spot, Dean grabbed a small box from the backpack and got down on one knee. Opening the box.
Leah's hands covered her mouth in shock.
"Leah Clearwater, since the moment I saw you, I've wanted you, nothing more, nothing less, everything else has and forever will be only a distraction next to you, will you marry me?" asked Dean.
"Yes, yes I will," she choked out through happy tears, kissing and hugging him.
A wide-smiling Dean slipped the emerald engagement ring on her finger. Green being her favorite color, the representation of life.
"It's beautiful, how on earth did you afford it?" Leah couldn't help but ask.
"Vampires are rich, and while I can't always get at their fortunes, there's enough lying around that we won't be hurting for cash, and the tribe sends out people when they can to collect what they can after every fight," said Dean.
"Interesting," said Leah.
After eating the sandwiches, he took her in his warm arms and they sat together quietly observing the wildlife and listening to the lapping of the waves.
"I'd love to stay here till the sun goes down, but we got to get back," said Dean.
"Yeah," Leah sighed, turning to face him, "This day was perfect, and did I ever thank you for the wake-up call, thanks for that, I'll want more of that in the future, and the massages," said Leah happily.
"Give and take honey, I'll be waiting for my wake-up call and massage," Dean grinned.
"Oh, you can count on it," said Leah biting her lip and giving him a sultry look.
Suddenly their lips smashed together, rolling her over and tearing off his pants. Hastily lowering hers just enough so he could enter her, rutting right there on the beach, unable to contain themselves a moment longer.
"Damn, the beach sex was nice all but let's not do that again, all this fucking sand is going to drive me insane," said Leah.
"Time to get home then so you can get changed," said Dean.
...
Arriving back at Leah's, they were happy to find only her mom waiting there.
"Dean, you're lucky Harry never goes into her room, I can practically smell the sex from here, and you'll be the one cleaning those sheets, young lady,"
"Mom," she groaned in stress, blushing in embarrassment.
"And what's that on your hand," Sue asked, something catching her eye. For Leah wearing any kind of jewelry was very unusual, she was never one of the girly types.
Then Leah grinned widely showing her mom the engagement ring on her ring finger.
"No," Sue gasped in shock, putting her hands to her mouth.
"Yes," said Leah.
"He didn't," said Sue.
"He did," said Leah.
Breaking into a grin as big as her daughter they hugged and squealed together with Dean wincing in the background at the noise.
"This is amazing, I mean I always knew this would happen but to think... it's amazing Leah, spectacular even, I'm so proud of you two," said Sue, bringing him into the hug.
"Now I expect you to call me mom young man," said Sue.
"Sure thing... Mom," said Dean as if testing the name with his mouth. Having never had one, his own dying in childbirth, it felt a little awkward to refer to someone as such.
"I think it'd be best we keep this from your Father for the time being, last thing we want to do is give him a heart attack, spirits know I try getting him to eat healthier. And you both being young and Leah still in school won't help. He's never been one to easily accept change," Sue said as kindly as she could.
"Not like we're getting married right away, it's an engagement, a promise to marry," argued Leah.
"I know dear, but he's a man, and they can be quite short-sighted," explained Sue, "No offense Dean."
"None taken," said Dean.
"There's a problem, Dean doesn't lie," said Leah, looking at her boyfriend rather proudly.
"I don't think that'll be a problem, he doesn't talk to me anyway, not to mention the chances of him asking something like that is astronomical," said Dean.
"A lie by omission is still a lie dear," said Sue.
"Only if it endangers one's life," argued Dean.
"Then it will be in this case, for his heart is at risk," said Sue with a sad smirk of victory.
"But in this case, it's the information that's the risk," said Dean, wiping the smirk from her face.
"Alright, alright, it seems my new son is a bit of a smart ass," said Sue.
"Better than a dumbass," Dean grinned causing the ladies to roll their eyes.
