Chapter 189 - Training Exercise 37

In the oasis, Mai Dongzi raised her hand and reversed a situation that could have resulted in everyone being eliminated.

This was also the first time Mai Dongzi used her psychic power attack skills directly in front of the students from the Imperial Capital University. Previously, she had only used her martial artist skills during combat.

Mai Dongzi’s powerful martial arts combat abilities displayed during the individual competition had made her unbeatable among the students at Imperial Capital University.

It wasn’t until today, when Mai Dongzi used her psychic power to deal with a large group of bandits, that they realized her psychic abilities were far beyond what they had imagined.

Wang Zhelan, in particular, admired Mai Dongzi immensely. As a metal-element ability user, she could also manipulate metal needles to attack enemies, but she was in awe of how effortlessly Mai Dongzi did it.

Her ability, however, could only control up to ten metal needles for an attack, and she couldn’t hide the traces left by the flying needles, making it easy for people to detect the presence of hidden weapons.

But Mai Dongzi could control more than fifty metal needles at the same time, attacking the enemy silently and without leaving a trace.

Wang Zhelan had been paying attention to her movements all along, yet she couldn’t even detect the trajectory of the metal needles. She only felt the needles suddenly disappear from Mai Dongzi’s hand and then appear unexpectedly behind the heads of the oasis people.

Wang Zhelan was certain that Mai Dongzi could control even more metal needles than the ones she used today. She could probably control hundreds of metal needles simultaneously without any trouble.

After all, Mai Dongzi was able to use her psychic power to gather more than forty weapons at once. Not to mention forty weapons, even one weapon was heavier than a hundred metal needles.

As for the original members of the Phantom Team, they were already in awe of their leader. Seeing her demonstrate her powerful psychic abilities only made their admiration grow even more.

But the Yu Guangxi and Durant were different. While they had acknowledged Mai Dongzi’s superior combat strength before and accepted her as their team leader, they were still seniors and maintained a certain level of pride in their status. Unlike the original members of the Phantom Team, they didn’t have the same level of reverence for her.

It wasn’t until today, when they witnessed Mai Dongzi’s true combat power, that the way they looked at her changed. Their eyes now held the respect one would give to a powerful individual.

“Have you tested her psychic attack power?” Instructor Li said, his eyes glowing with excitement.

This student is even more monstrous than I expected. She ended up in the Command and Arts Departments? How infuriating!

“No, you should know that the strongest psychic ability at our Imperial Capital University belongs to Director Hill from the Command Department. However, Director Hill’s psychic ability is more focused on brain domain development, so his combat power is not as strong as that of a warrior-level psychic who specializes in combat. Additionally, Classmate Xi is Senior Sister Su’s disciple. Nowadays, who in the Blue-Black Empire could have stronger psychic power than Senior Sister Su?” Instructor Shan said calmly.

Although Mai Dongzi’s psychic power exceeded his expectations, she is still Senior Sister Su’s disciple, and Senior Sister Su graduated from their Command Department. So, Instructor Shan was very composed and didn’t feel the slightest bit of embarrassment for not being able to teach this student.

Instructor Li was also speechless. Their special instructor from the Combat Department, Instructor Mu, is a late-stage level-six psychic, specializing in training combat students with psychic abilities.

Instructor Li, being an eighth-level warrior, often sparred with Instructor Mu, who was only a level-six psychic, and he knew firsthand how strong a combat-oriented psychic could be.

From his perspective and experience, Classmate Xi’s psychic power was not inferior to Instructor Mu’s, which meant that her psychic ability might even be higher than Instructor Mu’s.

Although the Phantom Team had given up on reaching the finish line within the designated time, it didn’t mean they were no longer heading toward the finish line.

After leaving the oasis, they originally planned to kill more beasts and use the points gained from killing them to make up for the loss of not reaching the finish line on time.

However, as they kept fighting, something felt off.

Previously, the beast groups would appear in clusters, with intervals of about one or two hours before the next group showed up.

Though the frequency of the beasts’ appearances had decreased slightly since yesterday, with new groups arriving roughly every hour, after they left the oasis, they encountered another group of beasts after only about half an hour.

By the time they had finished dealing with the first group of beasts, they didn’t have time to rest and recover before they noticed that the second group was already charging toward them.

After finally defeating the second group, they found themselves facing a third group of beasts that had already surrounded them.

By the time they had killed half of this third group, the fourth group of beasts was already charging at them.

At this point, everyone’s stamina had been greatly depleted, and the stones in their spatial devices were almost used up. Continuing to fight would put them in danger.

It was at this moment that Mai Dongzi made her move. This time, she used three metal throwing knives, each about 30 centimeters long and the size of two fingers.

Everyone saw the swift, slicing marks left by the three knives in the air. Then, the beasts surrounding them were struck in the throat in the order the knives flew, spraying blood before collapsing to the ground, twitching for a few moments before falling completely still.

The remaining half of the third batch of beasts, along with the fourth batch, totaled more than 120 beasts. Within less than two minutes, all of them had fallen to the ground, unable to rise.

Mai Dongzi put away the throwing knives, then collected all the beast corpses from the ground. With a serious expression, she said, “We need to move quickly; the fifth batch of beasts is charging toward us.”

The members of the Phantom Team, disregarding their nearly exhausted stamina, closely followed behind Mai Dongzi. They dodged and hid in the desert, evading the attacks from the beast packs, and finally managed to sit down and rest for a moment.

“We’ve likely encountered a beast tide. Everyone, hurry up and eat while we can.” A worried look appeared in Mai Dongzi’s eyes.

In her mental “scan” range, it was usually only one or two groups of beasts that appeared, but since yesterday, the number had increased to four or five groups.

But now, within her mental “sight” range, ten groups of beasts had appeared simultaneously.

Such a dense wave of beasts—no matter how much she used her mental power to lead the group in hiding—would be impossible to avoid.

The reason they were able to find a moment of peace, sit down, and eat now was because Mai Dongzi had used her mental power to form a barrier, concealing their presence and preventing the nearby beast groups from detecting them. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have had time to rest at all.

After over three hours of continuous fighting and nearly an hour of evading the beasts, the team’s stamina had been nearly exhausted. If they didn’t rest and recover soon, they would collapse from exhaustion before the beasts even had a chance to attack.

Mai Dongzi didn’t have enough information to analyze the current situation—whether it was just their group facing the beast tide or if the surrounding areas were also being affected.

What she could do now was to try her best to keep her teammates going through the beast tide.

If the situation became truly dire, she trusted that the instructors would step in. At that point, it wouldn’t be their fault.
