Transmigration: The Peerless Immortal Husband

Chapter 24 - Warning

Chi Changye agreed, saying, “Let’s wait and see.”

He had inquired with second master Tian about the situation outside Yuanyang Town. The outside world might not be any safer than Yuanyang Town, so if possible, he hoped to recover most of his injuries here and be able to use at least the strength of a Foundation Establishment cultivator before leaving. That way, both his and Gu Yao’s safety would be better guaranteed.

As long as no Foundation Establishment cultivator intervened, he could find a way to handle things. Moreover, it seemed like the Foundation Establishment ancestors of the three families were all in closed-door cultivation, and wouldn’t come out easily.

In the middle of the night, while meditating and cultivating, Chi Changye suddenly opened his eyes. Someone had triggered the formation. He quickly moved out of the room and stood in the courtyard. From there, he could “see” four cultivators outside—two had already fallen into the formation, and the other two were watching from the shadows.

Not long after, Gu Yao also came out. He had been cultivating during the night as well, eager to improve his cultivation. With such a large disturbance from the formation being attacked, how could he not notice? Seeing Chi Changye, he asked, “Who is it? Did the Gu family or the Lu family send them?”

Chi Changye replied, “There are two groups. They’re probably not from the same faction. The first two got caught in the formation, and they probably don’t know that the other two cultivators came after them. It seems like the later ones are waiting because of that, letting others act as scouts while they stay hidden.”

He looked at Gu Yao and added, “Don’t worry. The noise here is too loud; it’ll alert the Tian family’s patrolling guards. They’ll naturally retreat.” Thanks to the favor of first master Tian and second master Tian, their place had been included in the patrol’s protective range.

Gu Yao nodded. “Luckily, you were alert and set up the protective formation. Otherwise, if they charged in directly, even if help came, it would have been delayed.”

Chi Changye didn’t feel overly praised. If not for his injuries and weakness, he could have solved these small thieves with a wave of his hand. Now, he could only rely on the formation to intercept them, but even so, he couldn’t be underestimated. He said, “Xiao Yao, step back. Let me take care of the two in the formation first.”

Not fighting back is not his style.

“Be careful too.”

Chi Changye set several traps within the formation, using the spiritual symbols he had drawn. Sensing the positions of the two cultivators, he focused his thoughts and detonated the explosive fire symbols and the Tiangang Thunder symbols within the traps. Immediately, a deafening explosion rang out, accompanied by the screams of the cultivators. After a short while, the screams abruptly stopped.

“Who dares to cause trouble in the Tian family’s territory?” A patrol team of cultivators rushed over from the distance. They noticed that the trouble was happening exactly where the eldest and second young masters had given special instructions. If it was only the second young master’s order, they wouldn’t have been too concerned, but the eldest young master was different.

“Not good, the kid inside is skilled. Using both formations and spiritual symbols, he’s not someone we can handle easily. Let’s retreat first!” The two cultivators who had been watching from the shadows realized the situation was turning against them, and immediately retreated. As they turned, they indeed saw the Tian family’s patrol team arriving.

“It seems that the kid named Chi really is impressive. He must have set up this formation, right? The spiritual symbols triggered inside aren’t low-grade; they should be intermediate-level, and there are even Thunder symbols. Who is this kid, really?”

“Let’s go back and report to the family head immediately. Let him make the decision. But where did the two who went earlier come from?”

“Who knows? They died without injustice.” If they hadn’t died, we would’ve been in serious trouble. If we had stepped in, we might not have died, but we’d definitely have been seriously injured. The two cultivators felt a wave of fear in their hearts.

Realizing that the patrol team was approaching, Chi Changye deactivated the formation and walked out with Gu Yao, taking the two corpses that had been blasted to death within the formation along with them.

“We’re late. Are the two young masters alright?” The captain of the patrol team was first shocked by the two corpses lying on the ground, then clasped his fists and asked the two of them. They had underestimated these two; if they hadn’t arrived in time, the thieves might have still breached the courtyard.

“It’s fine. Two of them escaped, and they weren’t working with the others. I’d appreciate it if you and Gu Yao could look into their identities and find out who sent them here,” Chi Changye politely said, pointing at the corpses on the ground.

“Alright, we’ll look into the two who escaped, but we can’t guarantee any results,” the captain replied respectfully.

“I understand. We’ll explain everything to Second Young Master Tian.”

After exchanging pleasantries, the patrol team took the bodies and left. Although the corpses were badly disfigured from the explosion, their identities could still be discerned. As for the two who escaped, even if there were suspects, they couldn’t be accused without concrete evidence.

After briefly restoring the formation, Chi Changye and Gu Yao each returned to their rooms to continue their cultivation, and nothing more was mentioned.

The next day, at the Tian family residence, Tian’s father personally inquired about the situation. In fact, it was obvious who the perpetrators were — it was either the Gu family or the Lu family. He hadn’t expected them to be so bold as to send people onto Tian family territory and target those under Tian family protection.

Second Young Master Tian was even angrier. He had personally promised Chi Changye and Gu Yao that he would protect them, but now, four cultivators had come at night to deal with them, making Second Young Master Tian lose credibility.

“Father, who exactly dares to look down on our Tian family? What kind of lowly people would come to our territory and cause trouble?” Second Young Master Tian fumed.

“Second Young Master, we’ve already found out their identities. They belong to a small group with a bad reputation. They’ve been involved in several incidents outside the town, robbing and killing other cultivators. Someone has confirmed that these two were paid to target the two distinguished guests in the courtyard.” It was the captain of the night patrol team reporting back.

“So, it wasn’t people from the Gu family or the Lu family? Then who else would target them?” Second Young Master Tian asked, surprised.

“That’s not entirely accurate. According to my investigation, the people who hired them are likely connected to some individuals from the Fang family and the Gu family. I recall that Young Master Gu Yao had an altercation with someone from the Fang family at the market,” the captain reported. The Fang family siblings were quite notorious, relying on the Gu family’s influence to look down on others. It seemed that someone had recently taught them a lesson, and now they were taking their anger out on Gu Yao. This was the captain’s speculation.

“The Fang family and Gu Yao’s stepmother?!” Second Young Master Tian’s eyes widened. Wait, how could those two idiots from the Fang family know that Gu Yao had hired someone to deal with them?

“Leave now,” Tian’s father instructed, and the captain bowed before leaving.

“Feirong, is there anything you haven’t told me?” Tian’s father asked.

Tian Feirong rubbed his nose and explained that Gu Yao had instructed people to teach the Fang siblings a lesson: “Father, do you think the Fang family didn’t know it was Gu Yao who did it, and that’s why they’re retaliating?”

“I don’t think so,” Tian Feiyang shook his head. “The siblings and that Lady Fang from the Gu family might simply be taking out their anger on Gu Yao. Lady Fang’s subordinate is quite methodical and wouldn’t carelessly reveal who the employer was. Without any proof, the Fang family and Lady Fang could only suspect, but if Lady Fang is willing to pay, it’s probably to appease her family.”

“That woman is truly despicable! She knows perfectly well that Gu Yao is under my protection, yet she still let people act against him. Father, you can’t let that wicked woman and the Fang family off the hook. They clearly don’t respect you or our Tian family. Now that they’ve allied with the Gu family, they’re acting so arrogantly. If we don’t teach them a lesson, others will think they can do the same!” Tian Feirong shouted angrily. Everyone in Yuanyang Town knew that Second Young Master Tian was the one protecting Chi Changye and Gu Yao, yet the Fang family still dared to act—clearly, they didn’t take Tian Feirong seriously.

Tian’s father and his older brother both shot him a disapproving look. Although he made a valid point, it was obvious that he was mainly concerned about his own pride.

They glared, but the Tian family really couldn’t ignore everything. Tian’s father thought for a moment and clapped his hands, signaling for two men to come in: “Take these two bodies to Lady Fang of the Gu family and tell her that our Tian family thanks her for her concern.”

“Yes, Master.”

“Haha, when Father takes action, it’s truly exceptional! You’re right, Father, you’re still the best,” Tian Feirong flattered his father, praising him eagerly.

Tian’s father didn’t even bother to respond to his foolish son. He waved his hand dismissively, saying, “Go, go, so I don’t have to look at you.”

After Tian Feirong left, Tian Feiyang saw that his father was deep in thought and said, “Father, you’re thinking about the identity of that Chi Changye, right? I don’t think he was lying. It seems his family really is a talisman-making family. The talismans he used last night were all mid-level ones, and there were even Thunder Symbols.”

Thunder Symbols are the most deadly but the hardest to create, because the lightning spiritual power is so violent and difficult to control. If the creator isn’t careful, it could backfire. That’s why even the Lu family doesn’t have many Thunder Symbols, and they are extremely expensive.

“You’re right,” Tian Feiyang’s father agreed. “But in my opinion, that Chi Changye is likely staying here in Yuanyang Town because of his injuries. In the end, talents like him won’t be able to stay in such a small place. It’s good that the second son is getting along with them, but what do you think—does Chi Changye really care about Gu Yao?”

Gu Yao, after all, has the potential of Four Spiritual Roots. How much further could he develop in the future? Chi Changye’s talent should be very high. If he were to stay with Gu Yao, wouldn’t that just hold him back?

Tian Feiyang replied, “From what I’ve heard from Second Brother, it seems that Chi Changye really cares about Gu Yao. But what will happen in the future is still hard to say. Perhaps he’s just looking after him for a while?”

Tian’s father thought about it and agreed. After all, someone like Chi Changye wouldn’t be able to stay in Yuanyang Town, so it was better to make friends with him. Who knows, they might be able to rely on him in the future. As for the actions of the Gu and Lu families, they were too greedy. If they really tried to force someone to stay, who knows what kind of forces Chi Changye might have backing him up.

Gu Yao and Chi Changye learned from Tian Feirong that the two who died in the formation last night were hired by the Fang family. Gu Yao couldn’t help but sneer. He never expected that, even though he had proactively left the Gu family, this woman from the Fang family still wouldn’t leave him alone. To her, it seemed he should never have existed in the first place.

“Don’t worry, that woman will definitely be taught a lesson,” Tian Feirong said, thinking about how his father had handled things well. He had directly sent the message to the Gu family, making it clear that they had been warned. The person hadn’t even entered Changxian Gate yet, but was already so arrogant. Then he looked at Chi Changye with glowing eyes and said, “Brother Chi, you’re amazing. Last night, you managed to kill those two just with the formation and the spirit Talismans.”

Those two were one a fourth-layer Qi Refining cultivator and the other a third-layer. While they were considered lower-tier cultivators, the key point was that Chi Changye himself didn’t even need to make a move. The woman and the Fang family probably thought dealing with a second-layer Qi Refining cultivator like Gu Yao would be easy, but who would have thought they’d fail so completely? Also, Gu Yao had already reached the third layer of Qi Refining.
