Transmigration: The Peerless Immortal Husband

Chapter 19 - The Tattered Skin and Iron Piece

There were over a hundred boxes in a pile, with many people gathered around them, studying the boxes. However, the boxes all looked identical, and no matter how much they studied, they wouldn’t get any results.

Tian Feirong eagerly ran in and began feeling each one. He wasn’t concerned about the hundred spirit beads; what excited him was the thrilling and tense feeling of opening a box.

Chi Changye casually chose one from the nearby pile, keeping his main focus on Gu Yao.

Gu Yao also went straight for his target box. He thought about the incomplete treasure in his sea of consciousness. Could there be another piece here? Was he really this lucky?

Gu Yao and Chi Changye both came out holding their boxes. Tian Feirong was still selecting, and seeing that the two had already left, he felt that they weren’t very attentive. However, he quickly grabbed a box and chased after them. The people around, watching, thought these young masters must be so rich that they didn’t know where to spend their money. One hundred spirit beads wasn’t a small amount for ordinary people, and out of a hundred who played this game, ninety-nine wouldn’t get their money back.

“Have you decided? No changing your mind?”

“No change,” Gu Yao and Chi Changye both said at the same time. Tian Feirong also patted his box and said, “Hurry up and open it, let’s see how lucky we are.”

“Alright.”

The assistant first opened Tian Feirong’s box since he had the highest status among the three, and many people had gathered around to watch.

When the box was opened, Tian Feirong leaned in to take a look, and his face immediately showed disappointment. He pulled out a piece of tattered skin from inside, and the crowd let out a collective sigh. They couldn’t believe that someone had spent a hundred spirit beads to get this worn-out skin. Was it even worth a single silver?

Chi Changye’s gaze flashed, and he asked, “May I take a look?”

“Brother Ye is interested? Here you go.” Tian Feirong tossed the tattered skin over to him, clearly frustrated. The shopkeeper was becoming more and more ridiculous, trying to fool them with a piece of tattered skin.

Chi Changye glanced at it briefly before tossing it into his storage pouch. Gu Yao also took a closer look. He noticed there were faint lines on the skin, probably from its age. The lines were shallow, but it seemed to be something old, not just a piece of tattered leather.

The second box was Chi Changye’s. Inside was a jade bottle. Chi Changye opened the bottle and took a quick look, then casually tossed it over to Tian Feirong, saying two words: “Exchange.”

Tian Feirong had just caught a whiff of a pleasant fragrance and hurriedly caught the bottle, opening it to inspect. At that moment, someone nearby gasped in surprise, exclaiming, “It’s a Gathering Yuan Pill! It’s actually a Gathering Yuan Pill! Just one Gathering Yuan Pill is worth thousands of spirit beads!”

Tian Feirong’s hand trembled as he almost dropped the jade bottle. A single Gathering Yuan Pill could help him break through from the third level of Qi Refining to the fourth level, entering the threshold of a mid-level Qi Refining cultivator. Hadn’t Chi Changye recognized it earlier? “Brother Ye, this item is too valuable. I should return it to you. My piece of tattered skin is practically worthless.”

Chi Changye gave him a faint glance and said, “I gave it to you, so it’s yours now. This pill is useless to me. I won’t take your things for free.”

“This Young Master Chi is quite extravagant, isn’t he? What’s his background? Could it be that he’s already a mid-level Qi Refining cultivator?”

“Second Master Tian has good luck, but with the Tian family’s power, a single Gathering Yuan Pill isn’t anything too remarkable.”

“But they’ve made a huge profit this time. They spent just one hundred spirit beads and got something worth thousands. Quickly, open the last box and see what’s inside.”

Under the urging of the crowd, the assistant wiped his sweat and picked up a special key to open the last box. He hadn’t expected the previous box to yield a Gathering Yuan Pill, but with so many people watching, once word got out, it would definitely attract a lot of customers.

Gu Yao took out a piece of… a piece of iron. A wave of disappointment spread through the crowd. However, when they thought about it again, the three had already made a huge profit from the Gathering Yuan Pill, so they looked at the situation with a hint of envy.

Tian Feirong felt embarrassed. “How about I give you the Gathering Yuan Pill? You must have use for it.”

Gu Yao put the iron piece away and smiled. “No need. Let’s each take what we need. Can we leave now?”

“Alright, let’s go,” Tian Feirong nodded repeatedly.

The three of them left the shop amidst the envious gazes of the crowd. Many others immediately pulled out their spirit beads and ran towards the remaining boxes, hoping to open something just as valuable. The assistant watched them, smiling from ear to ear.

Upstairs, Manager Fu, who had been watching the three of them leave, turned to the person beside him. “Boss, you just let that piece of skin go like that? Does Chi Changye have the ability to see the hidden meaning in the skin?”

Standing next to Manager Fu was a middle-aged man dressed in long robes. He brushed off his sleeves and said, “Just keep an eye on that kid. If he leaves the city, immediately inform me.”

“Yes, boss. But doesn’t that iron piece also have some significance? The patterns on it look like a cauldron,” Manager Fu thought about the iron piece he had placed in the box, not expecting it to end up in Gu Yao’s hands.

The middle-aged man shook his head. “That was something a cultivator recently found outside the town. I’ve studied it, but couldn’t find anything special about it. We should still focus on that drawing for now.”

Could that scrap of skin be indestructible, burned but not scorched, cut but not broken? He thought of many ways to investigate it, but the thing still remained a tattered piece of skin. It had been in his hands for some time now. He might as well use it as bait. Perhaps someone would be able to crack the mystery of the skin.

“Yes, boss.”

As Chi Changye left the shop, he glanced back at the building. He had, of course, noticed someone observing him from upstairs. After a round of shopping, when the two of them returned to their quarters, Gu Yao immediately asked, “Is there any significance to that piece of skin? You’ve been under surveillance ever since you took it, right?”

Chi Changye looked at Gu Yao in surprise. “You noticed too? That should be a cultivator at the eighth level of Qi Refining.” But he didn’t pursue the matter further. Without waiting for Gu Yao’s reply, he took out the piece of skin and explained, “This beast skin is unusual. It’s from a creature called the Snow Sable Beast. This kind of demonic beast has already disappeared from the cultivation world. The skin is usually from ancient times. This place is probably quite backward, so they might not know that the Snow Sable skin has been treated with a special technique to conceal its true form. It requires a certain type of medicine to reveal its true nature. We’ll just have to wait for an opportunity to uncover it.”

They were already being watched, so they needed to be more cautious in their actions. Moreover, if this really was something passed down from ancient times, with his current strength, attempting to crack it would be like courting death. It was better to wait until they were fully prepared.

Could it be a treasure map? Gu Yao felt that the three of them had really gotten lucky today. All three boxes had valuable items in them, far exceeding the worth of the spirit beads they had spent. He nodded repeatedly and said, “Alright, we’ll go treasure hunting when the opportunity arises.”

Chi Changye curled the corner of his mouth in a smile.

That evening, Second Master Tian’s attendant came over to report on the situation with the Fang siblings. The incident occurred after the three of them left the market, a place with no clear authority. The Fang siblings were probably in a bad mood and had gotten into a conflict with some cultivators in the market. As usual, they tried to intimidate the other party by invoking the name of the Gu family, thinking that would scare them off. But to their surprise, the other party quickly called in two more accomplices, and the Fang siblings, along with their two followers, were beaten up badly. Fang Dongxiong was the most severely injured—his face was swollen like a pig’s head, and he had two broken ribs. Fang Donglan, who went running to the Gu family’s territory for help, was tripped and fell hard, knocking out two of her front teeth, making her look almost as bad as her brother.

By the time the guards from the Gu family market arrived after hearing the news, the cultivators who had been involved in the beating had already disappeared without a trace. When they asked others, no one could provide any details about the attackers. In the end, the matter was left unresolved. The Gu family couldn’t block the entire town and search for people just because of the Fang siblings, as doing so would offend two other families and various other forces. The Fang siblings’ status wasn’t high enough to warrant such attention.

Gu Yao was thoroughly pleased, his eyes squinting with joy. He then took out a bottle of medicine for treating external wounds and gave it to the messenger, who left happily.

“I’m going back to my room. If I don’t come out for dinner, don’t call me,” Gu Yao said to Chi Changye before returning to his room. He was eager to figure out exactly what that piece of iron was. Since he wasn’t sure how long it might take, he left a note to let him know.

As for Chi Changye not knowing how to cook—now that they had money, if they didn’t want to eat grilled meat, they could simply go out to a restaurant.

Whether the Fang family would go to the Gu family to have Fang Shi and Gu Zhiming support them was their own business. Gu Yao was hoping the Fang family would come knocking and make a scene, creating trouble for Gu Zhiming and the twins.

For now, it would end here. He would make sure to carry special medicines next time, and if he ran into them again, he’d handle things himself, including dealing with the twins.

A smile flashed in Chi Changye’s eyes. He had often heard Tian Feirong talk about how Gu Yao had suffered at the hands of the Gu and Fang families, but he hadn’t expected Gu Yao to be in such a good mood after this small act of revenge. When he smiled, it was like a little fox who had stolen a chicken, making anyone who saw him smile in return.

Chi Changye also began fiddling with the materials for a formation. He had some knowledge of formations, as they were often needed, and now that his injuries had healed somewhat thanks to his Star Body Technique and he had more spiritual energy to work with, setting up a formation to protect against high-level Qi Refining cultivator wasn’t difficult.

After closing his room door, Gu Yao took the iron piece out of his storage pouch. Aside from a blurry cauldron-like pattern on it, it didn’t seem to have anything particularly special about it. But it was this object that had caused the jade tablet in his spiritual sea to react, making Gu Yao eager to examine it right away, rather than waiting for the quiet of the night.

With a thought, the jade tablet infused with the jade orb appeared in his hand. The next moment, both the jade tablet and the iron piece began to vibrate slightly. Gu Yao couldn’t help but feel anxious. He wondered if the commotion would attract the attention of others. If he had known, he would have waited for Chi Changye to finish setting up the formation before merging them.

But once the merging process started, it couldn’t be stopped. The jade tablet and the iron piece slowly moved closer together, emitting a growing light. The glow intensified, far stronger than last time. Gu Yao quickly absorbed the jade tablet into his spiritual sea, but in the next instant, everything went black before he lost consciousness.

Meanwhile, Chi Changye, who was in the middle of preparing the formation, suddenly sensed a fluctuation of spiritual energy coming from Gu Yao’s room. He looked up toward that direction, but when he focused more carefully, the fluctuation vanished. Gu Yao’s presence remained unchanged.

Chi Changye stood up and took a few steps toward the room, but then stopped. Though they lived together, he knew that Gu Yao only regarded him as a temporary collaborator. He had no right to interfere with Gu Yao’s private matters.

This situation made Chi Changye frown slightly, but there was nothing he could do. He stood still for a while, sensing that there were no other changes in Gu Yao’s aura before turning back to continue his own work.

On the other side, once Gu Yao regained consciousness, his first action was to check his spiritual sea. With a thought, his consciousness entered the space within the jade tablet. Immediately, he noticed a change in the space. His eyes widened in surprise.
