Chapter 12 - The Tian Family Brothers
Tian Feirong excitedly ran back home and bumped into his older brother, Tian Feiyang, who had just come out from their father’s study.
Seeing him, Tian Feiyang scolded, “All you do is run around outside. Don’t you know you should focus on your cultivation? How long has it been since your cultivation has made any progress?”
Tian Feirong instantly made a face, feeling frustrated. His older brother was just so annoying, always watching him more strictly than their parents did.
He quickly pulled out a stack of spirit talismans from his storage bag and moved closer to his brother, trying to win him over. “I wasn’t just messing around outside today, I was working on something important. Big brother, take a look at these talismans and give me some advice.”
Tian Feiyang took them, somewhat skeptical, and glanced over them. “All fireball talismans? And the lowest-grade ones at that. Why bring back so many fireball talismans? Are you planning to learn how to make talismans? Are you finally trying to improve?”
Tian Feirong couldn’t help but think that his older brother was just there to make his life harder, but he only grumbled about it inwardly. Out loud, he explained the situation with Chi Changye, which made Tian Feiyang raise an eyebrow and begin to examine the talismans more carefully. “Are you sure these were all drawn today? So, Chi Changye really is the first one to make these talismans? Did he really say his family comes from a talisman-making family? Where did he come from?”
After a second inspection, Tian Feiyang noticed a slight difference. The spirit energy in this batch of talismans seemed a bit more abundant than any he had seen before. He immediately infused his own spiritual power into one of them, triggering it. The talisman immediately transformed into a fireball and exploded, sending a shockwave that even startled Tian Feirong. A basic fireball talisman had become this powerful?
Tian Feiyang’s eyes instantly lit up, and he grabbed Tian Feirong, asking him to recount the details of Chi Changye’s situation. Tian Feirong, now feeling a bit smug, shared everything he knew without holding anything back. Tian Feiyang, upon hearing it, couldn’t help but speculate, “Could he be another Feng Yinhua?”
“No,” Tian Feirong shook his head. “I don’t think Chi Changye is that strong. Right now, he can probably only display the strength of an early-stage Qi Refining cultivator. How powerful could he have been before he was injured? Also, I’ve looked into it, and when the Gu family took him in, he had nothing on him. It’s strange that he appeared outside our town, though. I haven’t heard of anyone being chased recently. It’s almost as if he appeared out of nowhere. Big brother, have you heard of any cultivation families with the surname Chi?”
Tian Feiyang nodded and said, “Even if he’s not another Feng Yinhua, given his age, his strength before he was injured must have been comparable to the talents in our Yuanyang Town. Now that he’s come to our Tian family’s territory, we’ll protect him. You should get along well with him and his companion. Fortunately, Gu Yao didn’t mind your bad reputation and was willing to come to you for help. Keep these talismans with me for now, and any future talismans should be sent here as well. We’ll pay him the market price.”
“Alright.” Tian Feirong was very pleased. “I noticed they didn’t bring much silver with them, so I’ll give them a sum tomorrow. You don’t know, this morning I ran into the Gu family’s twins and Lu Minzhu. Do you know what they said? Hahaha…”
Tian Feiyang, seeing his brother laughing to himself, immediately felt a headache. He thought he had done something good, but it seemed that his brother’s true nature had been exposed right after. He was about to leave, but just then, a servant ran in, calling as he came, “Second Young Master, Second Young Master, I’ve gathered some information about the Gu family and the Lu family… uh…”
The servant stopped mid-sentence upon seeing the eldest young master standing nearby. He choked on his words, nearly choking himself, and quickly bowed respectfully to the eldest young master, saying, “Eldest Young Master.”
Tian Feiyang gave his brother a glare, clearly irritated. His younger brother was so lazy about cultivation but always involved in these matters, never behaving properly.
Tian Feirong didn’t mind and said, “Come on, speak. What’s going on? You should listen too, it’s about the Changxian Sect token. Gu Yao revealed it, and now we don’t know what these three idiots will do when they go back.”
Tian Feiyang was speechless. If those three were idiots, what did that make his younger brother?
The servant, seeing that the eldest young master wasn’t stopping him, hurriedly shared the news he had gathered. Servants had their own way of getting information. By spending a little silver, they could contact servants from two other families and hear about what was happening inside the estate. Many pieces of news spread this way.
Gu Chen had always looked down on Gu Yao, but he was also very displeased with him holding the title of second son of the second branch. He often made things difficult for Gu Yao with Gu Xing, and although he had heard of Gu Yao’s maternal uncle, he had never paid much attention to it. After all, over the past ten or so years, he hadn’t shown up, so he might have already died somewhere in a corner.
But today, when he heard from Gu Yao that his uncle had left behind a Changxian Sect token and that this token had been handed over to the family, Gu Chen became anxious and angry. His father had never mentioned this, and in his opinion, since the token belonged to Gu Yao, it should belong to their second branch. In the end, the token’s rightful owner was obvious — it would be his.
But he also knew that his grandfather valued the eldest branch and his eldest cousin, Gu Yan, more than the third branch. Once the token was in his grandfather’s hands, it was most likely to be given to Gu Yan. The thought of such a great opportunity slipping through his fingers made Gu Chen regret so much he almost wanted to spit blood.
“Father, why didn’t you mention this before? Did grandfather specifically instruct you not to?” Gu Chen quickly guessed that this had something to do with his grandfather. His father’s temperament made it hard to know what to say; while he treated their twins as treasures, he always obeyed his father’s wishes. It was because he listened to his father’s advice that he married Gu Yao’s mother in the first place.
Gu Zhiming was also regretting it. How could he have known that this troublemaker would suddenly cause such an issue? “Chen’er, don’t worry. The reason I didn’t mention it before is because I was afraid this matter would spread to the ears of other families. This time, I’ll help you fight for it.”
Gu Zhiming cursed Gu Yao inwardly. He had hinted at Gu Yao several times before, and if the token could have been forcibly taken, he would have snatched it from Gu Yao’s hands long ago. The token should have been given to the most suitable person, and Chen’er’s talent was far better than that little troublemaker’s. More importantly, Chen’er and Xing’er had always been thoughtful and filial, which pleased him the most.
Thinking about it, Gu Chen was right—the token was clearly something for their second branch. If it fell into his father’s hands, the eldest branch would likely take it. Adding the fact that his father was always biased toward the first branch, Gu Zhiming couldn’t sit still any longer. If the first branch took the token, the second branch would never have a chance to rise again. He suddenly stood up and said, “I’m going to demand an explanation from your grandfather right now!”
“Father, my future depends on you. If I can enter the Changxian Sect, maybe one day I can bring both you and mother there,” Gu Chen painted a bright future for Gu Zhiming, which made his heart burn with excitement and strengthened his determination to fight for Gu Chen.
Gu Zhiming’s visit was predictable in its outcome: the token would not be handed over. The conflict between the first and second branches would escalate, and with the third branch stirring up trouble, the Gu family’s internal strife would definitely intensify.
After returning to the Lu family, Lu Minzhu asked the same questions after returning to the Lu family. However, the Lu family and the Gu family had already reached an agreement, so it was naturally impossible to seek an explanation from the Gu family for this granddaughter. Nevertheless, the head of the Lu family was reminded to call back the daughter who was married into the Gu family and scolded her harshly. The insinuation was clear: women should focus on their outward behavior, and now that the Gu family was scheming against their maternal family, she should remember not to rely on her family in the future when trouble arises.
Gu Zhixiao had many concubines in the backyard, and there were several illegitimate sons and daughters. However, because Lu Shi gave birth to a good son, Gu Yan, and later had the support of the Lu family, those concubines and illegitimate children had to obediently live off her. None of them could rise above their station.
Although the matter was suppressed by the head of the Lu family, there was still a crack between Lu Minzhu’s father and his sister Lu Shi, especially between Lu Minzhu’s mother, Lu Shi, and her sister-in-law. She hated this sister-in-law deeply and thought to herself, “Why didn’t she act earlier? Since she already planned to scheme for the token, she shouldn’t have involved my daughter in the first place. That little bastard, Gu Yan, is no good either!”
Lu Shi thought about her father-in-law’s attitude of trying to smooth things over, and Lu Shi’s outward show of guilt, which in reality was prideful. The thought made her so angry she almost spat blood. She knew very well that her father-in-law had made an agreement with the Gu family and would get plenty of benefits from them. Since the token wouldn’t fall into the Lu family’s hands, it was better to get some benefits from it. The one who suffered the most in this whole matter was her daughter. Why should her daughter be the one to sacrifice for the whole Lu family and that shameless woman, Lu Shi?
“Minzhu, don’t ever see that bastard Gu Yan again. I don’t believe he knew nothing about this matter. What did he tell you? That bastard is treating us like fools. Don’t worry, I’ll find you a better husband than Gu Yan in the future. What’s so special about him? Even if he gets the token and enters the Changxian Sect, so what? Who knows if he’ll even live long enough to make it to the end? He might be a short-lived ghost!”
Lu Minzhu cried bitterly in her mother’s arms, still unable to believe that everything her cousin had said to her was false. He had promised to marry her, but she knew that only those holding the token could enter the Changxian Sect. No outsiders could go in. So even if she married her cousin, what would it matter? Her cousin wouldn’t be coming back from the Changxian Sect for years, and she didn’t have the time to wait.
Seeing her daughter so heartbroken, Lu Shi’s resentment grew even more. She hated her sister-in-law, hated Gu Yan, and hated the head of the Lu family and her husband. No one had asked for her opinion when the marriage between her daughter and Gu Yao was arranged. Now it was the same. These people didn’t take her or her daughter into account at all, and she was determined to make them pay!
Hearing about all this, Tian Feirong was delighted. “Brother, I told you that Gu Yao is a smart kid. The third branch of the Gu family is going to cause trouble now. As for the Lu family, Lu Minzhu’s mother doesn’t seem like the type to just keep quiet. Who knows what kind of mess they’ll stir up. Haha, the bigger the mess they cause, the better it will be for our Tian family.”
Tian Feiyang listened to the whole story like he was enjoying a book. He brushed off his sleeves and walked toward his courtyard, leaving behind these words: “No matter how much trouble they cause, if you don’t improve your cultivation, it won’t be your turn to step forward. As long as Gu Yan enters the Changxian Sect, the Gu family will always hold the upper hand over our Tian family.”
Small skirmishes didn’t mean much. In this world, strength and cultivation were what mattered. If the Tian family didn’t have enough strength to rival the Gu family, there would likely be no space left for the Tian family to survive in Yuanyang Town.
