Chapter 30 - There’s no one else here
Jiang Zi’s eyes flickered slightly, and she effortlessly came up with an excuse: “I went home to grab some clothes.”
“What clothes?” Tang Yuan asked sceptically, narrowing her eyes. “Then, where are those clothes now?”
Unfazed, Jiang Zi met her gaze calmly. “I haven’t picked them up yet.”
Realizing Jiang Zi wasn’t going to tell the truth, Tang Yuan gave up on pressing further and played along. “Fine, then let’s skip going back to the villa tonight and go grab your clothes.”
Tang Yuan returned to the restaurant parking lot, got into her car, and glanced at Jiang Zi in the passenger seat, watching her buckle her seatbelt. Jiang Zi then tilted her head slightly as if reminding Tang Yuan they could leave now.
Tang Yuan entered the address for Ding Xinghai and asked casually, “Did you take a taxi here?”
Jiang Zi nodded quietly, looking well-behaved.
In reality, Jiang Zi had driven herself in her gray McLaren, which sat parked in an empty lot. Clearly, its owner had no intention of retrieving it anytime soon.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the upscale Ding Xinghai residential area. Back at Jiang Zi’s apartment, she unlocked the door with her fingerprint, revealing the faint golden glow of a painting on the opposite wall as the door swung open.
Jiang Zi turned on the lights, the warm glow illuminating the cozy living room. She pulled a pair of new, still-tagged indoor slippers from the shoe cabinet, took out a pair of scissors from a drawer, snipped off the tag, and handed them to Tang Yuan.
Tang Yuan slipped on the slippers, which fit perfectly. They were a soft pastel pink. “Hey, new shoes—were these prepared just for me?”
Since Tang Yuan’s last visit, Jiang Zi had prepared new slippers and toiletries.
Jiang Zi casually shut the door behind them.
Tang Yuan, feeling right at home, walked over to the sofa and collapsed onto it. The large, soft cushions made her feel like she could fall asleep the moment she closed her eyes.
However, Jiang Zi grabbed her wrist and pulled her back up. “Go take a shower.”
“I already did~.”
But Jiang Zi wasn’t having it. “You smell like barbecue.”
“Or… do you want me to help you wash?”
Tang Yuan’s eyes shot open, now fully awake, as she stared at Jiang Zi with hopeful, eager eyes. Her tone turned bashful, “Really?”
Jiang Zi narrowed her eyes dangerously. “Are you sure?”
Tang Yuan quickly sat up, admitting defeat. “Not sure.”
“There’s a new bathrobe in the bathroom, along with fresh towels, a toothbrush, and a cup.”
Tang Yuan stepped into Jiang Zi’s bedroom, flipping on the lights. She hadn’t been inside the bedroom during her last visit.
To her surprise, the room was decorated in shades of pink. A large floor-to-ceiling window with cream-coloured curtains embroidered with pandas gave the space an unexpectedly cute feel. A round bed sat in the center, covered in pink ruffled bedding that looked like a layered cake—extremely girly. A white gaming desk was next to a princess-style dressing table.
Tang Yuan stood there, wide-eyed, utterly shocked by the bedroom’s decor. The drastic contrast between the living room’s modern style and this bedroom, not to mention the clash with Jiang Zi’s usual image.
Jiang Zi walked up behind Tang Yuan and, noticing her standing frozen, asked, “What’s wrong?”
Tang Yuan’s gaze shifted around the room before finally landing on Jiang Zi. With a hint of pity in her voice, she asked, “Did you not check the place before buying it? Which designer did this? Can you file a complaint with the owner?”
Jiang Zi’s fingers twitched slightly, a flicker of embarrassment passing through her eyes. “You don’t like it?”
“It’s not about whether I like it or not,” Tang Yuan replied, lifting her hands to gesture around them. “Don’t you think it doesn’t match your vibe at all?”
Jiang Zi’s lips curved slightly, her deep eyes holding a trace of amusement. “Really?”
Sensing that she might have hit a sensitive spot, Tang Yuan quickly realized she’d been too blunt. Worried she had touched Jiang Zi’s fragile heart, she held back from saying more.
Glancing around to avoid Jiang Zi’s gaze, she added, “Well… it’s totally my style, though, so I’ll just pretend you secretly have a crush on me! Haha~”
Jiang Zi stepped over to a large mirror embedded into the wall. She slid it sideways to reveal a walk-in closet behind it.
Tang Yuan followed her, and the moment she saw the closet’s contents, her expression froze.
“Sister Jiang, you…” Tang Yuan pointed at the wardrobe filled entirely with white dresses, her hand trembling. “This whole walk-in closet—it’s all white dresses! Are you cultivating to become an immortal or something?”
Without waiting for an answer, she continued to tease, “No, even immortals don’t dress this plainly.”
“So, when you said you came back to get clothes, you meant… these?” Tang Yuan asked, still stunned.
Jiang Zi also didn’t realized just how many white dresses she had until now, either.
In Jiang Zi’s memory, her closet held only a few dresses for show and a portion of her everyday clothes. It was clear that the designers, in their misguided attempt to help, had filled her closet after noticing it was sparse, pushing her daily outfits into the corners.
Now, to keep up the facade, Jiang Zi could only nod awkwardly and cough lightly, trying to play the victim. “I don’t have clothes to wear for the competition.”
Tang Yuan: “…You do.”
“But It’s no different! I’ll take you shopping for new clothes tomorrow. These plain outfits…” Although some were nice to look at, when Jiang Zi wore them, she truly resembled a delicate, pure heroine—something she absolutely wouldn’t agree with!
Through gritted teeth, Tang Yuan said, “Give me half.”
Jiang Zi: “…??”
Seeing Jiang Zi’s bewildered expression, Tang Yuan hurried to clarify, “Don’t get the wrong idea! I’m going to sell them!”
“Then I’ll just give them all to you.” Jiang Zi had no attachment to any of them and didn’t want to keep a single piece.
Tang Yuan began selecting several standout dresses with unique designs and a soft touch. “These are still nice! They’re beautiful. If you’re not going to wear them, I will!”
Excitedly, she picked up her favorite one. “I’ll go take a bath first.”
Jiang Zi shut the door behind her, watching as Tang Yuan cheerfully entered the bathroom and closed the door.
Aside from Tang Yuan, everyone else had a stereotype of her shaped by the world’s rules and expectations.
Jiang Zi felt a flicker of curiosity. What kind of image did she project in Tang Yuan’s eyes?
Half an hour passed, and Tang Yuan still hadn’t come out.
The silence in the bedroom felt overwhelming to Jiang Zi.
She called out, “Little Tang Yuan?”
“Little Tang Yuan”
After a couple of attempts, her voice finally reached Tang Yuan.
The bathroom door cracked open, revealing just her head. With water glistening in her eyes, she looked at Jiang Zi, one shoulder exposed like pure white jade, an utterly enticing sight.
“Jiang Zi, my dress is stuck. Can you help me?” Her voice was sweet and melodic, almost hooking Jiang Zi’s heart.
Jiang Zi sat on the edge of the bed, gazing at her without moving.
Tang Yuan grew anxious; her arms were genuinely tired from the awkward position. “Sister, come over here and help me, please.”
A lazy smile curled Jiang Zi’s lips, her demeanor relaxed and teasing, “There’s no one else here. Just walk over.”
Tang Yuan blinked, her eyes misty, a faint blush creeping across her cheeks.
Indeed, the room was empty, and it wouldn’t make much difference whether she stayed in the bathroom or stepped out, but she felt shy nonetheless.
The dress she was trying on was a halter-neck short dress with an irregular fishtail hem. The zipper on the back was stuck halfway; she couldn’t pull it up or down, making it nearly impossible to remove.
After hesitating momentarily, she considered using some force to rip it off, but it was such a beautiful dress.
Resigned, she opened the bathroom door and stepped out.
