Transmigrated into a Villainess? I’m Going to conquer the Heroine!

Chapter 28 - Law-abiding citizen

Tang Yuan drove to the agreed-upon restaurant. The villa was quite far from the city center, and the drive took an hour. By the time she arrived, night had fallen, and the lights were bright.

At the table sat a man wearing a floral shirt with dyed white hair. His features were refined, and he wore an expensive watch, giving off the air of a wealthy young master.

He must have been waiting for quite a while, as he deliberately appeared impatient when he saw Tang Yuan approaching.

Dong Ling was sitting with his legs propped up and a pout on his face, tapping his fingers on the table to express his dissatisfaction. “I say, Miss Tang, you’re half an hour late. I’m starving to death.”

Tang Yuan took her seat across from him. “I thought you’d have started eating by now.”

“Do I look like that kind of person?” Dong Ling snorted. “I only agreed to this meeting because you said you had something important to discuss. I canceled a date with a beauty for this. You better have something worthwhile to talk about.”

Tang Yuan placed her bag aside and picked up the menu. “Don’t rush. I’m hungry; let’s order first.”

“I’ve already ordered.”

Dong Ling had ordered the food in advance. Although he didn’t know exactly what Tang Yuan liked, he was aware of her restrictions and avoided them. He instructed the waiter to serve the food once everyone had arrived.

The waiter pushed a cart over, and soon, the table was filled with dishes.

Tang Yuan wasted no time picking up her chopsticks and starting to eat.

After a long day and a lengthy drive on an empty stomach, she was starving.

She only set down her chopsticks after eating to about 70% fullness.

Tang Yuan pulled a crumpled document from her bag and placed it in Dong Ling’s hand.

Dong Ling wiped his mouth and, puzzled, picked up the document. “What’s this?”

“Take a look first.”

Dong Ling shot her a suspicious glance before flipping the document. It was ten pages long, and as he read, his expression grew increasingly serious.

“Where did you get this?”

Tang Yuan shrugged. “I got it from my brother.”

“Are you trying to set me up? Did you forge this?”

Tang Yuan looked innocent. “Don’t you trust me?”

Dong Ling lowered his voice. “This is confidential and involves our family’s cooperation with the Chu family. How am I supposed to trust you?”

“Dodg Ling, I’m only telling you this because I consider you a friend,” Tang Yuan said, leaning back in her chair with her arms crossed, her posture relaxed.

“As you can see, I’ve fallen out with Chu Yu. He’s already planted his people into our company, but fortunately, he wasn’t successful because my brother discovered them.”

“He couldn’t take down our family, so with his ambition, he’ll obviously look for his next target.”

“You think of him as a brother, but he sees you as just a subordinate, someone he can sacrifice at any moment.”

Dong Ling’s face darkened. Although he had a long-standing relationship with Chu Yu, he wouldn’t easily take Tang Yuan’s word for it. However, knowing Tang Yuan, he was certain she wouldn’t fabricate something like this.

Tang Yuan took the document back from Dong Ling.

Dong Ling snapped out of his daze. “Hey?”

Tang Yuan nonchalantly stuffed the document back into her bag. “I’m showing it to you.”

“With your IQ, you might think of confronting Chu Yu with it, and I can already guess how that would end.”

“You’d slam the document on the table, angrily demanding to know if it’s true and whether he really sees you as a brother.”

“Of course, Chu Yu wouldn’t tolerate your outburst. He’d respond with a patronizing tone, Saying he’s offering you a grand opportunity while feigning disappointment and gaslighting you into feeling that you don’t trust him.”

Dong Ling fell silent at Tang Yuan’s calm and matter-of-fact tone.

He had indeed felt a strong urge to confront Chu Yu, and his planned response was quite close to what Tang Yuan described.

Tang Yuan elegantly speared a piece of watermelon with a fork and ate it, not looking at Dong Ling.

After putting down the fork, she continued, “I’m letting you know in advance, isn’t it much better than finding out the hard way? Think carefully—after a lifetime of good deeds and abstaining from alcohol, are you sure you want to get involved in this kind of business?”

Dong Ling’s mind was still jumbling, and he only absorbed part of what Tang Yuan said. “That’s because I’m allergic to alcohol.”

That’s why he abstains from it.

Tang Yuan: …

“Oh.”

Dong Ling looked worried. “I know he’s been running those shady deals in the background, and they’ve really elevated the Chu family’s status. Sometimes, we also need to use his channels…”

He suddenly thought, “Your brother must have used his channels at some point, back when you two weren’t at odds.”

Tang Yuan firmly denied, “Absolutely not.”

Dong Ling didn’t believe it. The profit from Chu Yu’s channels was significantly higher, saving a lot on taxes. “How do you know? Your brother is the one managing the family business.”

“I said no, so it’s no. My brother is a law-abiding citizen.”

Although Tang Gu was deeply invested in business, he was also a law-abiding businessman. This was the biggest difference between him and Chu Yu.

Dong Ling propped his face up with his hand, his expression nonchalant. “Law? What’s the use of that?”

Indeed, this is a bug of this world’s rule. The male lead, with his halo, disregards the law, making its presence almost negligible.

However, survival was key for the Tang Yuan. To achieve her side mission of living a long life, she needed to bring the male lead to justice.

She had to make sure the male lead faced legal consequences. Fixing this bug would ensure that not just the male lead but all related parties would be held accountable.

Currently, Dong Ling hasn’t engaged in such dealings with Chu Yu. Although there were tax evasion issues, paying the fines later could avoid prison.

But if he were to get involved in such illicit activities, the forces of justice would make sure they served their sentences.

Tang Yuan patted her stomach, realizing she had overeaten. There really wasn’t much to chat about between her and Dong Ling.

Tang Yuan didn’t think she could get everything to succeed at once. If the hidden mission to sway Dong Ling didn’t succeed, she’d just continue with the main mission.

It’s just that she considered Dong Ling a friend, and if she could lend a hand, she would.

“Alright, now that we’re done eating, let’s call it a day.”

Tang Yuan slung her bag over her shoulder and stood up. “You’re an adult. You have your own thoughts. If you’re willing to investigate, you can find what you need. It’s up to you to choose. That’s all I have to say. Goodbye.”

“Wait!” Dong Ling called out as Tang Yuan turned to leave. He also stood up. “There’s something I’m very curious about.”

He leaned on the table with one hand and put the other in his pocket, trying to appear calm. “I’m curious; you once cared so much for him, almost giving him everything; why did you suddenly stop loving him?”

Tang Yuan rolled her eyes, irritated by the question. “I was blind before and couldn’t see what a terrible person he was. Now my eyes are cured, okay?”

“If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving.”

Without waiting for a response, she walked out.

Dong Ling stood there, his thoughts scattered and his expression unreadable.

‘A terrible person.’

What was Tang Yuan’s standard for a terrible person?

In the past, Chu Yu had never treated her well, and she still eagerly chased after him despite the cold reception.

Dong Ling rubbed his face, slumped into the soft sofa, and sighed repeatedly.

He felt a headache coming on, and his mind was in turmoil.
