Chapter 28
Chapter 26
Children had all once dreamed of becoming heroes.
“There’s bad news and worse news; which do you want to hear first?”
“Isn’t everything already bad news?” Yukinoshita Yukino shot a cold look at her hand—the mouth that could not say good things—waiting for the evasion she was sure would come.
“The first piece of bad news is, as time passes, I will gradually become the new master of this body, leaving you only as a wraith with no ability to wrest control away from me.” She thought she’d receive another of Zai Mu Zuo’s usual dodges, but instead heard something much more explosive.
Her heart skipped a beat, and the girl’s eyes widened in alarm. Even her breathing lightened in response.
Her voice cracked, quaking: “What did you say?”
An obscure shadow flashed across Yukinoshita’s eyes, as though betrayal from someone close had overwhelmed her. Her heart felt a strange twinge of pain, and a numbness spread through her limbs.
Was he lying to her? Or had he finally shed the guise and shown his evil nature?
“Though not by my wish, it remains fact.” Lin Qi’s voice carried an air of hopelessness; the support system he should have, instead of helping, has been causing him trouble.
Lin Qi’s tone reassured Yukinoshita somewhat, and rational thoughts gradually flowed back to her. Since Lin Qi said it wasn’t his doing voluntarily, that at least means he isn’t betraying her.
Though there’s also the possibility of deceit, but Yukinoshita chooses to trust his words.
“Then what about the other bad news?” Yukinoshita forced herself to ask calmly.
“You have to kill a Special Grade Cursed Spirit,” Lin Qi said.
A Special Grade Cursed Spirit?
Didn’t the bug-like one from yesterday turn out to be Grade Three? Just dealing with the weak Grade Three, as described by Lin Qi, left both Yukino and Hachiman Hikigaya drenched in sweat. How could she possibly face a Special Grade?
“Don’t worry, I’ll step in,” Lin Qi bluffed a large laugh.
“So your job is just to wander around; find the Special Grade Cursed Spirit, and leave it all to me. When that’s done, the first piece of bad news will sort itself out.”
“Really?” Yukinoshita looked up, her indigo eyes suddenly shining.
“What do I gain by lying? You don’t need to rush; just live life as usual.” Smiling, Lin Qi glanced at the time. “For now, you should really go to bed.”
Yukinoshita froze, then her legs started moving toward her bedroom. “Wait, you…! I can walk myself!”
…
In the end, Yukinoshita didn’t read through Zai Mu Zuo’s novel.
Unlike last night where she was coerced by her mother to sleep, with Zai Mu Zuo acting like an old nag, this felt like a new experience.
Mainly because at Yukinohata’s home, she dared not stay up late like she does in her current apartment.
She could only catch some reading during breaks or after eating her lunch break box, thankfully there wasn’t much left from last night, and she finally finished it during after-school club activities.
After putting down the manuscript, Hachiman Hikigaya came in to the Service Club, followed by a pink-haired, bun-headed girl.
“Good afternoon.”
“Little Snow, yo~”
While Lin Qi was absent, Yui Yuigahama seemed to have joined the Service Club, and she managed to warm up to the club despite Yukinoshita’s reluctance.
With Yui’s enthusiasm, the Service Club was less silent and more lively.
As Yui began chatting with Yukinoshita about the funny events in their class, the classroom door suddenly opened.
“Gladly, I arrive!” With a grand voice, Lin Qi finally saw the yet-undiscovered novelist, Zai Mu Zuo, whom Yukinoshita had spoken of.
A chubby, bald man wearing a thick, brown overcoat strutted in like a victorious general. He instantly performed a traditional Sichuanese face-changing trick, shifting dramatically from triumphant to defeated, and awkwardly approached the group with folded hands.
The image matched perfectly Lin Qi’s expectations.
“Have you all finished reading?” Zai Mu Zuo asked cautiously.
“We’ve finished, albeit a tough journey.”
“It, um, kind of went over once.”
“Cough! You mean you’ve actually finished, right?”
Having received three affirmative nods, Zai Mu Zuo suddenly regained his composure, his expression hardening. He waved his hand, reflecting a white light off his glasses, “Feel free to speak candidly! Regardless of whether they’re praises or not, I will take them all in stride!”
Middle school delinquency? Lin Qi queried internally.
You know this condition? Yukinoshita asked, somewhat surprised. Living a millennium ago, such an old soul would know modern lingo?
Most people do, don’t you? Lin Qi responded casually.
Indeed, middle school rebellion comes to everyone; when he was young, he even learned how to mimic fire-ninjas from Naruto and shouted water-based jutsu before spitting all over others.
I only found out yesterday, Yukinoshita admitted.
She returned from the bathroom to find an unknown character in the Service Club, who stood by the window pulling the curtains aside. The broken window fortunately went unnoticed.
Thankfully, Hachiman Hikigaya arrived in time. Otherwise, Yukinoshita would have engaged the stranger in Aikido to subdue him.
“Come on! No holding back! Don’t mind me!” Zai Mu Zuo spread his arms, revealing a plump chest as he seemed to claim the whole world for himself.
“Your words are truly reckless.”
Hachiman sighed lightly; from the beginning, he warned them. Compared to Yukinoshita’s biting comments, editors and online readers’ harsh words might seem gentler.
Heaven only knows how to deal with those who won’t listen to reason.
Rest in peace, Zai Mu Zuo.
“I’ll begin,” Yukinoshita picked up the stack of papers covered in marked bookmarks, “It’s dull, far duller than I imagined. Honestly, reading it became a torment.”
“Ugh!”
Not even speaking freely could save him; just Yukinoshita’s first sentence pierced through his chest like a sword. Holding his chest, Zai Mu Zuo stumbled backward, nearly toppling from his chair. His evaluations of specific scenes and grammar issues were brutally honest.
Lies may hurt, but truth cuts. What Yukinoshita wielded cut deep into Zai Mu Zuo’s small heart, leaving its scarred remnants behind.
Once all present had voiced their opinions, this middle school delinquent, “Yukinoha’s” self-proclaimed Great General, lay limp on the ground, as if lifeless, his spirit seemingly drifting out of his mouth.
…
After school, she would become a Jujutsu Sorcerer:
