Chapter 24
Chapter 24 Chapter 22 You seem to have a lot you can’t let go?
As the project leader, not long after the incident occurred on the construction site, a call was made directly to Yukinoshita Yono’s phone.
“Collapsed!?” Yukinoshita Yono suspected that her ears were playing tricks, unconsciously raising her voice several decibels higher, “What does collapsed mean?”
“Well, it means just that, Miss Yono… now the site is surrounded by fire department personnel, they’re investigating the cause of collapse.” The voice from the phone conveyed an intricate mixture of emotions, subtly absurd.
“I understand, I’ll be there right away.”
After ending the call, her subordinate kindly sent a picture of the scene from the site.
In the photo, the construction site was surrounded by a cordon, several firefighters with helmets were busily working. Some led sniffer dogs searching for possible victims, others checked for fire hazards. Surrounded by curious onlookers, the once-old office building turned into stacks of rubble.
“Huh?” Despite being astute, even Yukinoshita Yono couldn’t comprehend how a building that was in good shape earlier in the day had collapsed within hours.
She suddenly recalled that her younger sister Yukinoshita Yukino was still nearby in the area this afternoon. Quickly, she dialed her.
“Dial tone… Hello, sis?”
Yukinoshita Yukino’s clear, cold voice echoed through the phone, not sounding alarmed. Yono sighed in relief, “Yukino, where are you right now?”
“At home. What’s wrong?” The voice sounded peculiar, as if holding some unexplained guilt.
“The office building we have under contract collapsed due to unknown reasons, were you and your classmates there at the time? Are you hurt?”
“…It collapsed? We were fine earlier today. We just passed by, without stopping there.” Yukino’s voice crackled up again.
Intuitively sensing something off about her sister but unable to pinpoint the exact issue, Yukinoshita Yono held back her slight concerns, “Good that you’re safe. It must be because the building was old, right? The cause is still under investigation.”
“I need to head over to the site. I’ll hang up first.”
Once the call ended, Yukinoshita Yukino relaxed her tense expression.
“You really can’t lie very well,” Lin Qi criticized lightly, “Didn’t you master the art when faking sick to skip that exam with Hozumi-sensei?”
“Hozumi-sensei can’t compare to sis…” Yukinoshita Yukino responded, feeling utterly powerless to her older sister.
Her brain went blank when Yuno called, struggling to keep things from her. Lin Qi took over and covered her, using her voice.
Left alone to answer, Yukinoshita Yukino might have stuttered and revealed everything eventually.
“Though, to say the least, you have some serious acting skills. If you pursued acting, you’d surely have won a little golden trophy,” Lin Qi remarked with a light jest, then gently rebuking, Yukinoshita Yukino slightly lowered her head while deep in thought, softly saying, “It seems sis is actually able to talk to me normally.”
When did Yukinoshita Yono start talking to her like this, except to tease or deliver serious messages from their mother?
“Are you saying it’s unusual for someone to worry about their sister?” Lin Qi followed through, trying to change the focus from the demolished family building.
Not quite catching on to the hidden agenda, Yukinoshita Yukino vaguely said, “Unusual… Is our family still considered ordinary?”
With her perspective, her strict mother, kind father, and outstanding elder sister, they seemed like any ordinary family.
“From a young age, sis has always liked to tease me, though I’ve gotten used to it somewhat, it doesn’t feel natural,” Yukinoshita Yukino murmured.
In her recollections, their close relationship started fading after elementary school when she left for middle school overseas. When did they drift apart?
“You seem to hold onto many things tightly?” Lin Qi suggested, “Life should be more carefree.”
“Well, if I could live like the Parasitic Bug without concern for upsetting people, I would find life quite carefree too.” Yukinoshita Yukino smiled.
Recalling Lin Qi and Yukinoshita Yuno, she immediately thought of the call and the ruined office from the curse spirit.
“By the way, you must have something important to say?” she retorted icily.
“Not playing dumb, please!” the girl whispered fiercely.
“Is this how you speak to a savior!?” Lin Qi tried to take back control, shouting, “This was supposed to be a trial for you and Hikigaya. If you had defeated the curse spirit, nothing untoward would have happened!”
“Regardless, are you saying there wasn’t some bit of truth in my rescue?”
“Even…” Snow之下’s expression became strained by the sudden outburst, her tone softened a bit, “…there should be other better options.”
“Should I cut that cursed spirit into pieces?”
“Hold on. Were you just twisting my words?” Snow之下 came to herself eventually, “What do you mean by putting the facts aside?”
“Explain yourself!”
“I know it’s urgent, but first calm down,” Lin Qi decided to play it cool, trying to reason, “Although the building collapsed accidentally, if I hadn’t acted, it would’ve crumbled anyway under the curse spirit. By taking action now, I merely expedited the inevitable.”
“On the bright side, perhaps this place was destined for demolition anyway. Thanks to me, your sister saved money she would’ve spent tearing down the old building. I’d think she’d thank me.”
“In the end, my timely intervention prevented the workers onsite from being killed, and potentially your sister too. With this in mind, gratitude should be abundant.”
Lin Qi’s tone grew with confidence, oblivious to the stormy face of Yukinoshita Yukino.
“Still not thanking me!?”
…
“Have they found the cause of collapse?”
Returning from Tokyo to Chiba almost immediately, upon arriving, the waiting subordinate rushed over, “Not yet, but something very strange was discovered.”
“What is it?” Yuno frowned.
“The fire department found the walls were sliced like butter, almost…” he paused, “like they were slashed with knives.”
“Are you joking?” Before concluding, Yuno noticed something more pertinent.
Outside the barrier, a bicycle stood alone by the roadside.
If she recalled correctly, the bicycle pushed by the boy Yukinoshita Yukino was with today was identical to this one.
