Chapter 107 - A way
“Hmm?” Hearing Hoshino Gen’s words, Asakura Meika looked surprised. “Why would you think that? The contamination in your body is already quite severe. If you don’t find a way to suppress it, the consequences will be unimaginable… Contamination is like cancer. After experiencing a complete loss of control once, don’t you think becoming an ordinary person again is actually a very fortunate thing?”
Hoshino Gen shook his head with a smile. “Contamination does need to be suppressed, but I have my own methods. I don’t need you to make decisions for me. If possible, could you help me unlock these shackles?”
Asakura Meika was puzzled. “Your method… Do you mean pausing all supernatural activities and spending more time around ordinary people? But don’t you know that when you possess power beyond reality, even if you don’t seek the supernatural, the supernatural will find you?”
Hoshino Gen was well aware of this. His master in his previous life had explained it to him — this phenomenon was called Yin-Yang Attraction. Ghostly beings were the purest form of Yin in the world, naturally drawn to the Yang energy of living humans. For those with extraordinary powers, their Yang energy could be dozens or even hundreds of times stronger than ordinary people, making them irresistible targets.
Likewise, those with special abilities often felt compelled to seek out vengeful spirits. This mutual attraction greatly increased the chances of encounters — though that was only one interpretation. The relationship between Yin and Yang, such a fundamental truth of the world, was far from simple.
Even so, Hoshino Gen still responded with a faint smile. “You don’t need to worry about that. Since this is my own choice, whatever the outcome, it’s my own business, isn’t it?”
Asakura Meika’s brows furrowed. “But your situation is very special. What if the vengeful spirit inside you…”
Halfway through her sentence, she stopped. However, Hoshino Gen’s eyes narrowed slightly, a trace of surprise flashing through them. “You noticed her existence?”
As soon as he finished speaking, his mood visibly brightened. He chuckled. “Ah, so that’s what all this fuss is about… If that’s the case, there’s no need to beat around the bush anymore.”
He paused, then raised his head with a smile. “You don’t seriously think these shackles can completely seal her inside me, do you?”
Asakura Meika froze. “What do you mean?”
“I mean…” Hoshino Gen sat on the bed, slowly closing his left eye as if preparing for something. Moments later, his eyelid snapped open, and a vivid crimson light surged within his eye. The metal locks around his wrists and ankles immediately flashed red, triggering alarms. Asakura Meika instinctively staggered back two steps, staring at him in shock.
The crimson light faded after a short while. Hoshino Gen glanced at the still-dazed Asakura Meika, then casually shifted his gaze toward a well-hidden surveillance camera in the corner.
“This little trick doesn’t work on her. If my powers were still active, I might be able to resist her to some extent. But with my abilities sealed like this, if she wanted to cause… unpleasantness, I wouldn’t even have the means to stop her.”
His words were deliberately vague, but Hoshino Gen was certain those watching would understand.
Sure enough, Asakura Meika’s expression shifted. After a brief silence, she asked, “You’re saying you don’t want your powers sealed… and you have a way to suppress the contamination without losing control, is that right?”
“Hmm… You could put it that way. But as for whether I’d lose control again — I can’t make any promises. Even with these things on, I can’t guarantee that.” Hoshino Gen motioned to the shackles on his hands, then tapped his left eye.
Asakura Meika nodded. “Understood. I’ll report everything to the higher-ups.”
With that, she turned to leave. Before stepping through the sliding door, she glanced back. “You’re not being imprisoned — the ability locks on your body are still in the experimental stage. No one can guarantee they’ll work as intended. This facility is simply to prevent tragedies like the underground garage incident from happening again…”
Without waiting for a reply, she left.
The door closed slowly. Hoshino Gen remained seated on the gel mattress, unmoving.
It was a while before he let out a weary sigh, leaning his body against the wall.
The crimson flare in his left eye hadn’t been triggered by the vengeful spirit or the anomalous locks — he’d simply stirred a connection buried deep in his soul. That connection had existed since the day he was born in this life.
One end of the thread was tied to his soul.
The other end… naturally belonged to the vengeful spirit in his left eye.
Hoshino Gen didn’t know where the connection came from. But perhaps… it was precisely because of this bond that she had managed to cross the boundary of life and death and reappear before him in this life.
“Bai Tong…” he murmured the name softly, then collapsed onto the bed, draping his left arm over his eyes.
He didn’t have to wait long. Around three hours later, the door opened again.
This time, it wasn’t Asakura Meika who appeared — just two security guards who escorted him out of the facility.
The front entrance was nothing more than a pair of ordinary sliding glass doors.
Before he could step outside, he spotted a familiar figure waiting in the sunlight — Kiryu Rakuye, smiling sweetly as always.
As soon as Hoshino Gen emerged, she bounded up to him. “Good afternoon, senpai!”
Her cheerful greeting was no different from before, as if completely unaware of everything that had happened.
“Good afternoon,” Hoshino Gen replied politely, eyeing her with curiosity. He could guess why she was here.
Sure enough, after a brief exchange of pleasantries, Kiryu Rakuye got straight to the point with a playful smile. “I heard about the trouble you’ve been having lately, senpai.”
She fished out a magnetic card from her pastel blue-and-pink shell-shaped purse. Then, to Hoshino Gen’s surprise, she crouched down and swiped the card through the gap in the ankle shackle.
With a soft chime, the shackle clicked open.
Kiryu Rakuye remained crouched, tilting her head up at him with a bright smile. “This card can unlock your ability locks. But the team’s recommendation is not to release everything at once — your contamination is really serious, after all. How about unlocking one-quarter first? Once that part’s under control, we can remove the rest, okay?”
She stood up, handing him the card.
“But… the final choice is yours, senpai.”
