Chapter 5 : Into the Depths of the Ruins
Two Months Later: Deeper Into the Woods
It had now been almost two months since Kiro began training under Kevin. Kiro had grown stronger and more skilled, but the mysteries of the Whispering Woods only deepened. The Aerofuse technique had become a regular part of his training, and while Kiro had become proficient at activating it, the aftereffects were brutal. Each time he used Aerofuse, his body ached, leaving him vulnerable after the rush of power wore off.
“Aerofuse is tricky,” Kevin had said while sparring with Kiro. “It's not just strength. It drains your body if you use it for too long. A minute of enhanced strength could leave you weak for hours.”
Advantages of Aerofuse:
1. Increased Strength: Kiro could lift things five times his weight while using Aerofuse.
2. Heightened Speed: Aerofuse increased his reaction speed, allowing him to dodge attacks and move through the dense forest faster than any human.
3. Endurance: It gave a temporary boost in stamina, allowing him to keep fighting even when physically exhausted.
Disadvantages:
1. Limited Time: The longer you used Aerofuse, the weaker you became after its effects wore off.
2. After-effects: Kiro found that his body ached intensely after prolonged use, leaving him vulnerable.
3. Unpredictable: If Kiro wasn’t focused, Aerofuse could falter, making him lose control in the middle of a fight.
Daily Life with Aero
Life in the forest wasn’t just about fighting monsters. Kiro had grown attached to Aero, the small bird he had rescued during a hunt. Aero had a strange ability to mimic Kevin’s gruff voice, which led to moments of unexpected humor.
One morning, Kiro was trying to prepare breakfast over a fire when Aero landed on his shoulder, puffing up his feathers. “Are you gonna burn that too?” the bird squawked in Kevin’s voice.
Kiro blinked. “Did... did you just insult me?”
Aero, as if completely understanding, flapped his wings and repeated in a perfect mimicry, “You’re a terrible cook.”
Kevin, sitting by the fire sharpening his knife, looked up with a rare smirk. “Seems like the bird knows you well.”
Despite the harsh world, moments like these kept Kiro grounded, reminding him that he wasn’t entirely alone. Even Kevin, though gruff and distant, had grown to tolerate Kiro’s presence. They shared stories around the campfire, and Kevin would occasionally offer advice—not just about fighting, but about survival.
The Fight Against the Twisted Beast:
One of their most intense battles was against a Twisted Beast, a nightmarish creature that looked like a fusion of a wolf and a bear, lurking deep within the Whispering Woods. The beast had been terrorizing the nearby town, stealing food and dragging off livestock. Kiro and Kevin had been tasked with killing it.
As they tracked the beast’s movements, Kiro activated Aerofuse, feeling the rush of power surge through his veins. His senses heightened, allowing him to see clearer in the dim light of the woods. They eventually came face-to-face with the monster—a massive creature, nearly twice the size of a bear, with thick matted fur and eyes that glowed red in the night.
The fight was brutal. Kevin, using Aerofuse, charged the beast head-on, while Kiro circled around, trying to find a weak point. Aero screeched from the trees, darting down occasionally to distract the monster, giving Kiro an opening to strike.
Kiro’s sword slashed into the beast’s side, but it wasn’t enough. The creature howled, its massive paw striking him across the chest, sending him flying into a nearby tree. Just as the beast prepared to finish him off, Kevin leaped forward, delivering the final blow to its head, collapsing it in a heap.
As they stood over the dead beast, both panting from the exertion, Kiro noticed the strange light again—this time, a larger mass of the jelly-like substance oozing from the Twisted Beast’s corpse. It seemed... alive.
