"Speech"
After class, right before Romach headed for lunch; He heard someone calling for him. "Romach can I ask you a question?" When he turned to face the voice, he saw Jack and Annie walking toward him. Jack looked tired while Annie happily snuggled what Romach assume is her DS.
"I'm happy to answer any questions Jack, so what can I do to help you?"
"Um well, it's about the companion cards."
"What happened to it? Last I check the data didn't show anything wrong with it." What he said caught the attention of both students.
"Wait what do you mean by that?"
"I receive data from the companion cards, to make sure that nothing is wrong. How else do you think I check if any of the students are mistreating the companions? Ah! Don't worry it also tells me if the one harming the companion is the owner or someone else, so you don't have to worry about someone framing you for abuse."
"Uh, no that isn't what I was worried about."
"So what are you worried about?" Jack took out his companion card from his pocket and extended it to Romach. Romach eye's slightly widened as he saw the golden border and circuits on what looked like a normal card. "Is that your companion card?" Jack nodded, and Romach reached to grab the card. However, once he grabbed the card, a jolt of pain went through his hand. The pain was as if someone set his arm on fire while running electricity through it. Making sure to keep his face neutral, Romach looked over the card and handed the card back. Once he let go of the card, the pain quickly disappeared.
"You see Annie and my companion card seemed to fuse with one of our other cards."
"YEA! I can even hand you mine over to prove it."
"Ah, that isn't necessary Annie, I believe both of you." He leaned down to look at the card once more, as he thought over what could have happened something clicked. However, to both the kids, Romach's expression hadn't changed at all. "About the companion cards fusing with your cards, I'm not sure what happened. But I will inform both of you once I figured out what happened."
"Would both of us be able to use the cards in duels, or would these cards get us in trouble if we use them?"
"Hmm good question, I think for now both of you don't use the cards in duels. I'll provide you with both replacement cards by tomorrow, so don't worry about missing them." He glances at Annie's shiny card. "Well for Annie, are you fine with a normal Winged Kuriboh? I don't I will be able to provide you with another one of that rare variety of cards." Annie nodded in understanding.
"I'm fine with that, I still have my shiny card so it's fine!"
"Great! Well, I don't want to take any more of your time, So why don't the both of you get going? I doubt both of you want to miss lunch before your next class." The duo waved Romach goodbye as he walked back to his room. Once he arrived at his room, Romach went over the data he received from Jack and Annie's companion card before the connection was cut. With the data, he managed to get and what he just learned from the two students; Romach grew a wide grin as an idea came to him.
"Maybe the key for the catalyst cards to materialize a DS is in the Duel Monster cards?" He picks the top card of his deck, he grin slowly turns into a frown. "However it seems like not all Duel Monster cards can be used to materialize and bind a DS. If any Duel Monster card can react with the catalyst cards, then the other four students wouldn't have only partially materialized one." He turns the card to reveal the Vendread Houndhorde, then glances at his catalyst card on the table. "If I manage to use the Duel Monster cards to more reliably materialize DS, then I will be able to speed up the projects schedule by weeks or maybe even by months." Romach places the card next to the catalyst card and then opens up a private network, at the same time sending a message to Fidel. "If I'm going to do more tests on this, then I need Fidel to produce more companion and catalyst cards. He might even allow me to use that Dante kid as a test subject, I bet he would love to have his own companion."
After an hour of waiting, Fidel answered with a link to a private chat. Joining the chat Romach was greeted with the face of a scowling man. "What do you want Romach? Didn't I tell you we are currently busy taking out the pests that have been interpreting the company's work? The only reason why I'm even bothering to call you is that you messaged me saying it was important, so spit it out what is it?"
"Ah! Fidel, thank you for answering, and so I don't 'waste' any more of your time; I'll go straight to the point. The catalyst cards managed to materialize and even bind a DS to a duelist. Also, it wasn't a one-time occurrence, as two duelists from the same batch fully materialized a DS while the other four managed to least partially materialized one." Fidel raised one brow at the news.
"Can I see proof of this?" Romach grinned as he sent all the necessary data. Fidel nodded as he read over all the data. "It looks like that the subjects are the same ones Dante gave the decks to. This will make both of them the subjects who have shown the most progress."
"Yes, however, if you read continue reading; you can see that maybe the decks only worked because of the cards themselves!" Fidel read over the notes attached to the data.
"That data also says that only the duelist who materializes the DS will be able to use it. Something about how it reacts negatively to you trying to hold the card?" Romach nodded as he glances at his arm.
"Yes, but that might even be a boon for us. As with this, we don't have to worry about any thief." Fidel smiles at the comment.
"This is worthwhile news, so Romach what do you need of me? Do you need us to produce more cards?" Romach nodded.
"Yes, I also need certain Duel Monster cards." Fidel glanced at the data once more.
"Do you think that the key to materializing a DS lies in Duel Monster cards?" Romach's grin grew.
"I'M CERTAIN!"
"Very well, send me a list and I'll provide you the cards you need."
"Thank you, Fidel!" Before Romach ended the call, he remembered something else he needed. "Ah, can you lend me, Dante, for a bit? I want to see if he can materialize a DS, he has quite a lot of potential." Fidel frowned.
"Dante is currently busy taking out the pests, how about I lend you, Isabella, instead?" Romach shook his head.
"Your sister holds little potential, however, I'm certain that Dante might manage." Fidel sat in silence for a moment before sighing.
"If you can wait until Dante is done with the mission he is currently on, then I can lend the both of them to you."
"Hmm more test subjects always help, sure I can wait." Fidel nodded.
"Will that be all?"
"Yes, I'll keep you up to date on the project."
"Very well, I'll contact you when Dante is done." The call ended and Romach was left alone in his room. He picks up both the catalyst card and the Vendread Houndhorde card. The catalyst card shined, the light condensing to form a mutated dog. The dog open its eyes and happily barked at Romach. He smiles at the dog and then glances at both the cards in his hand, then back to the dog.
"Now let's see if I can unlock your true potential."
"Bark?" The dog tilted its head in confusion as Romach's grin grew.
