This Danzo Is Weird!

Chapter 101: 101. Danzo: From Now On, I Am Your Father

In the western part of the Land of Fire, Kikyō Castle.

After the intense battle to defend the town, the entire area, including the surrounding mountains, had suffered massive destruction.

The streets were lined with collapsed buildings, and a large number of residents were slowly clearing the rubble, trying to restore the town to its pre-war state.

Since the ninjas of Kikyō Mountain had been either deployed to support other fronts or were on guard duty, they couldn't participate in the reconstruction, making the process painfully slow.

Additionally, the brutal war had created another problem—orphans.

Many children had been left homeless after losing their parents in the war.

Some of the older ones could barely contribute to the reconstruction efforts and support themselves.

But the younger ones were left to beg on the streets, relying on the kindness of others.

Just as Nara Shikai was about to dig into his own pockets to fund the establishment of an orphanage, members of the Root approached him.

They made it clear that the Root would take responsibility for these orphans.

Shikai was immediately filled with questions.

Since when did the Root, known for its ruthless operations, start caring for orphans?

Was the notoriously sinister Root trying to rebrand itself as a benevolent organization?

Though puzzled, Shikai had no reason to refuse the offer.

Or rather, he had no power to refuse.

After all, the Root was the most authoritative department in Konoha.

Even if Shikai had refused, the Root could have easily taken the orphans by force under some pretext.

That was just how domineering Danzo's Root was.

So, Shikai chose to cooperate, saving himself a considerable amount of money.

As he pondered why Danzo wanted these children, another ninja arrived.

Nara Shikai quickly met with this ninja, a woman named Yakushi Nonō.

As an excellent medical ninja, she had recently made a significant impact in Kikyō Castle, saving many ninjas and civilians.

Nonō had smooth golden hair, wore round black glasses, and donned a nun-like outfit that, combined with her medical ninja aura, gave her a saintly appearance.

The moment she met Shikai, she got straight to the point.

"Mr. Shikai, I hope you will allow me to take the orphans in the city to Konoha's orphanage," Nonō said, making her request clear.

She then added, "Don't worry, I will treat them as if they were my own children."

Hearing this, Shikai frowned.

What was going on?

Why were these unwanted orphans suddenly in such high demand?

Seeing his expression, Nonō sensed something was wrong.

"Is something the matter, Mr. Shikai?" she asked.

Shikai crossed his arms on the table, his expression uneasy.

"Well, Director Nonō, you should know that the Root has already come to take these children."

Nonō's mind was struck by a thunderbolt.

While others might not know, as a member of the Root, Nonō was well aware of what went on there.

The Root was conducting inhumane human experiments!

And the subjects of these experiments were children!

Hearing that the children had been taken by the Root, Nonō's heart sank.

She could already imagine the fate that awaited them.

The lucky ones would die in agony during the experiments.

The unlucky ones would survive, only to be turned into emotionless killing machines through brutal training, spending the rest of their lives in the dark depths of the Root.

Recalling the innocent faces of those children, Nonō clenched her fists.

"I'll take my leave now," she said coldly, then turned and walked away.

Even with his sharp intellect, Shikai couldn't figure out what was happening.

After all, all information about the Root was classified, and even Shikai had no way of knowing the true identities of Root members.

After leaving Shikai, Nonō headed straight for the Root's base in Kikyō Castle.

If the Root really planned to take these children back to their headquarters for experiments, they would first gather at the base.

When she arrived at the base and tried to enter, she was stopped by a Root ninja wearing an animal-patterned mask.

"Leopard, what's the meaning of this?" Nonō asked, her gaze turning icy as she stared at the ninja codenamed Leopard.

Faced with Nonō's question, the Root ninja remained unmoved.

"Lord Danzo has ordered that no one is allowed to enter here until he arrives."

Hearing Danzo's name, Nonō's face turned pale.

She knew all too well the fate of those personally selected by Danzo.

He was a man who could awaken the darkness in people's hearts!

But Nonō wasn't ready to give up.

"Leopard, I'm the director of Konoha's orphanage. These children should be under my care. Please let me in."

Unfortunately, as a member of the Root, Leopard's loyalty lay solely with Danzo's orders.

Even if the Hokage himself showed up, he wouldn't defy Danzo's command.

That was the nature of Root ninjas.

In comparison, people like Nonō seemed out of place in the Root.

As Nonō pondered how to break through this situation, shouts from the direction of the city gates made her heart sink.

The shouts grew louder and clearer.

They were chanting—

"Long live Lord Danzo!"

"All hail Lord Danzo!"

"Thank you, Lord Danzo!"

Amid the cheers, Danzo and Ryoma Aburame appeared at the city gates.

As he arrived, the crowd on both sides of the street erupted into even louder cheers.

Unknowingly, the name "Danzo" had become synonymous with heroism in this town.

Whenever people mentioned Danzo, they would remember the man who single-handedly blocked a Tailed Beast Bomb.

Many children even saw Danzo as their idol, aspiring to become great heroes like him.

Hearing the cheers, Danzo couldn't help but smile warmly.

Along with the cheers, he heard the constant chime of notifications in his ear.

"Skill points +1"

"Skill points +1"

...

In just a short while, his skill points had increased by 500!

By the time he saw Nara Shikai standing in the middle of the street with a group of officials to welcome him, Danzo's eyes were filled with appreciation.

This kid has potential. He's worth nurturing!

Seeing Danzo's smile, Shikai breathed a sigh of relief.

As a member of the Nara clan, known for their intelligence, Shikai had understood Danzo's intentions the moment he heard from Ryoma that Danzo was coming to Kikyō Castle.

Under normal circumstances, there would be no need to inform him of Danzo's movements in advance.

The fact that he was informed meant there was something he needed to prepare.

Given Danzo's outstanding performance in recent battles, Shikai felt it was time to let Danzo experience the warmth of Kikyō Mountain.

He wanted Danzo to know that the people of Kikyō Castle were grateful and would never forget his kindness.

Thus, the scene of a large crowd waiting on the streets to welcome Danzo was born.

"Why all this fuss? Don't do this next time," Danzo said, seemingly reprimanding Shikai, but it only reassured him.

It seemed he had guessed right!

So, in front of everyone, Shikai declared solemnly:

"Lord Danzo, it was you who led the ninjas and citizens of Kikyō Castle to victory against Sunagakure and Kumogakure!"

"It was you who led us to defend our home. We will never forget this kindness!"

"Here, on behalf of all the people of Kikyō Mountain, I offer you our highest respect!"

With Shikai's three sentences, the crowd erupted into cheers again, and Danzo's skill points surged by another 200!

Meanwhile, Ryoma, standing nearby, looked stunned.

What was happening? Had the world fallen so low that even the proud Nara clan was resorting to such tactics?

Regardless, Shikai's approach was highly effective, earning him a satisfied smile from Danzo.

Danzo patted Shikai's shoulder and said earnestly:

"Shikai, while we've repelled the enemy, we must not neglect post-war reconstruction and humanitarian efforts."

Shikai immediately caught on and quickly replied:

"Lord Danzo, that's my fault. But I've already followed your orders and gathered all the orphans for care. Please come and guide us."

Hearing this, Ryoma expression darkened again.

Damn it, wasn't that supposed to be my line?

Danzo, with his Byakugan activated, noticed Ryoma expression but was also impressed by Shikai's quick thinking.

He nodded and said, "Then please lead the way, Shikai."

"It's my duty. This way, please!"

Shikai extended a hand and walked alongside Danzo toward the Root's base.

Meanwhile, as Nonō was still figuring out how to rescue the children, Danzo arrived, surrounded by a crowd.

Nonō's face turned pale, and she lowered her head, trembling as she uttered the four words that filled her with dread:

"Lord Danzo."

"Ah, Nonō," Danzo said without any surprise, smiling at her.

"You've worked hard taking care of these children, Director Nonō."

Hearing Danzo's gratitude, Nonō didn't feel relieved.

Instead, a chill ran through her heart.

Danzo's gentle smile looked like the grin of a demon to her.

He's here.

The demon has arrived!

Those children are doomed.

They'll be drained of all their value and then discarded.

That was Nonō's thought.

Danzo's current kindness was just a facade to build his image.

Once these children lost their value, they'd be cast aside!

Absolutely!

But Danzo, who seemed like a demon to her, had no idea what she was thinking.

Even if he did, it wouldn't change his plans.

Danzo stepped into the Root's base, which was temporarily serving as an "orphanage," in front of everyone.

As the doors opened, the children inside, covered in dust and wearing tattered clothes, looked up.

Seeing so many people, these children, who had recently lost their parents, were visibly nervous.

Danzo scanned the group of children.

His eyes finally settled on a silver-haired boy standing at the front.

The boy's silver hair made him stand out. His small face was smudged with dirt, and his clothes were full of holes.

More importantly, there was a noticeable wound on his arm.

This boy, who would later become the "Dream Maker" and cause great trouble for the Allied Shinobi Forces, now looked at the imposing old man with timid eyes.

Under the innocent gazes of all the children, Danzo, leaning on his cane, walked up to them.

He bent down and ruffled the boy's silver hair with his rough hand.

"Don't be afraid. The war is over."

At that moment, the young Kabuto once again felt the warmth of family.

The hand on his head, though rough, was filled with warmth and brought him a sense of security.

As Kabuto looked at Danzo with gratitude, Danzo gently placed his hand over the wound on Kabuto's arm.

A green glow appeared, and under Danzo's healing, the wound began to heal rapidly.

"Don't worry. No one will bully you anymore."

Under the awed gazes of all the children, Danzo straightened up and declared loudly:

"It's unfortunate that you've lost your parents, but from now on, I am your father!"

"I will protect you, protect all the children of Konoha, of the Land of Fire!"

"I promise you, I will never let you suffer harm again!"

"Unless the enemy steps over my dead body!"
