Chapter 21
Chapter 21: Hurry Up and Destroy It
“This is impossible! Damn it!”
The next day, Hikigaya was hoping to find an opportunity to talk to Hirata and remind him about the issues with the school. But what he didn’t expect was that it wasn’t his lack of action that blocked him—it was… those girls surrounding him!
Whether it was on the way to school or during breaks, there were always a lot of girls around Hirata, making it impossible for Hikigaya to approach him!
In just two days, Hirata Yousuke had subtly become the leader of D-Class. With his sunny appearance and gentle personality, he had naturally won high praise from the girls.
Even in the typically competitive male groups, his helpful personality had earned admiration, although the idiot duo of Ike and Yamanouchi didn’t count.
This was enough to show that Hirata Yousuke wasn’t the kind of two-faced guy who played favorites. Whether girls or boys, he treated everyone equally.
“Damn, he’s such a ‘Ikemen’!” Hikigaya said, feeling speechless and not envious at all!
Fortunately, these girls weren’t obsessed enough to follow Hirata into the bathroom, so Hikigaya found a chance to talk to this sunshine-like “air conditioner” of a warm guy. He casually mentioned things like school discipline and personal points. However, the results only made Hikigaya frown.
“Personal points? Are you worried about overspending your points, Hikigaya? It’s okay, I’m pretty frugal, I don’t spend much. If you ever have any problems with that, feel free to ask me for help,” Hirata said.
“The classroom discipline is indeed a problem. I’ve already asked the teacher, but right now there’s no good solution. If any classmates cause you trouble during class, I apologize on their behalf.”
Wait… is he too much of a good guy?!
And why is he apologizing for the mistakes of others?!
Hikigaya almost died from frustration. He’s so good-looking, but his brain shouldn’t be this slow!
“Hirata, don’t you think some things at this school are strange? The class points, personal points… the school is treating students too well. 100,000 points per person every month—do you really think that’s possible? Could there be something hidden behind all of this? And the teachers’ attitudes are also too suspicious. Do you really believe that letting students run wild can achieve the 100% graduation and employment rates they advertise?”
Hikigaya’s words were blunt—this wasn’t even subtle hinting anymore. He was clearly implying that there was definitely something wrong with the school. But to his surprise, Hirata just calmly responded.
“Actually, Hikigaya, I’ve noticed the things you’re talking about, and I’ve been thinking about them for quite a while.”
Hikigaya’s face lit up. He thought, See, he’s not a complete idiot after all, even though he’s such a “Ikemen”!
“But for me, the most important thing is that everyone in the class can get along well. Right now, everyone in the class is happy every day, and seeing their smiles, I’m already very satisfied. I also really appreciate Hikigaya for letting me know that there are many students like you in the class who quietly worry about the class. That’s really great, really great.”
Seeing Hirata looking as if he was about to be moved to tears, Hikigaya fell silent.
Was he not clear enough?
Or is Hirata Yousuke really an idiot?
Hikigaya vaguely sensed that Hirata had already understood his “purpose,” but he had chosen to deliberately avoid it in the end?!
Was he unwilling to face the truth? Or was there another reason?
“Sure enough, D-Class is full of problem children!”
Hikigaya had originally thought that Hirata was one of the more well-adjusted and normal students in D-Class. But now, Hikigaya felt something was off, and he couldn’t help but sigh.
If Hirata couldn’t work, then who in D-Class could?
It couldn’t be the ice queen sitting nearby, could it?
“Spending the whole day just observing others, it’s really uncomfortable,” Horikita openly showed her irritation.
“I was just curious about all the cameras in the classroom and around the school. And the classroom discipline is so bad—don’t they worry about being recorded by these cameras? Even the teachers don’t manage them.”
“Is that really so hard to understand? The cameras are there to prevent students from violating rules. And following classroom discipline is something even children understand—does it really need the teacher to remind them? It’s just a waste of time! Even if they get punished by the school, it’s their own fault for causing trouble!”
Horikita’s harsh criticism was so intense that Hikigaya could feel her anger.
It was clear that Horikita had also been angered by the chaotic classroom discipline. She could have bottled it up alone, but with Hikigaya bringing it up, she found an outlet to vent her frustration.
From Horikita’s words, it wasn’t hard to hear that she was also very dissatisfied with the situation in the class, and she had adopted a mindset of “let it all fall apart” in terms of being indifferent to it.
Hikigaya twitched the corner of his mouth. Horikita’s response was completely different from Hirata’s—if Hirata had Horikita’s principles and firmness, maybe the situation in D-Class would improve a lot.
“Uh, what exactly is the meaning behind the personal points and class points set up by the school? Giving students such an excessive privilege out of nowhere really feels suspicious and unsettling,” Hikigaya decided to try again.
“I’m saying…” Horikita glared at Hikigaya, furrowing her brows. “Is that really so hard to understand? And I have no interest in high school romance.”
After saying that, the ice queen no longer paid any attention to Hikigaya, who was left standing there dumbfounded.
Well, actually, Hikigaya was already used to being misunderstood by girls in this way. His heart no longer stirred much…
Just kidding!
Although Hikigaya had already mentally prepared himself, this outcome was still very disappointing. But thinking about it, as the most out-of-place oddball in the class, how could anyone “listen” to him?
To put it bluntly, the idiot duo’s words probably carried more weight than Hikigaya’s. Reality was just that cruel.
A lot of times, those in power don’t need to listen to opinions from below. What they need is compliance, to assert and maintain their authority and status.
Even if Hikigaya went to Hirata and told him everything, he might not accept it. In fact, he might even become displeased with Hikigaya for trying to disrupt the unity. This is the reality of clearly defined social hierarchies—or the drawbacks of a collective.
An individual’s will is hard to communicate and influence the class, while the class’s authority is held in the hands of only a few students. This is probably why Hikigaya is so disillusioned with the collective.
It’s also one of the reasons why lone wolves are born.
Indeed, trying to discuss this decision with the class from the beginning was completely wrong!
This class is beyond saving; it should just be destroyed already!
