Chapter 1: Rascal Hikigaya
My name is Hikigaya Hachiman. I am a lone wolf, and also a transmigrator—or to be precise, I am Hikigaya Hachiman from another parallel world line.
Originally, he was supposed to be attending Chiba Sobu High School. On the first day of high school, he was in a car accident. His class included the clique of Hayama Hayato and Miura Yumiko, while his only two friends were Totsuka Saika and Zaimokuza Yoshiteru. Then, in his second year, he was forcibly dragged by his violent female teacher, Hiratsuka Shizuka, into a strange place called the “Service Club.” From there, Hikigaya’s high school life embarked on an unpredictable path.
However, due to Hikigaya’s own actions, the relationships within the Service Club fractured, even falling apart entirely.
Pretending to confess to Ebina in order to maintain the balance within the popular clique, helping Isshiki Iroha become the student council president—he had clearly solved the problems and ensured that no one got hurt. But why did things turn out this way?
He only wished for a world where no one got hurt, so why did it end up like this?
“You only understand the logic behind words, but you fail to grasp the emotions contained within them. Hikigaya, you believe too much in absolute rationality, which is why you can never truly understand the way others act. You ignore other people’s emotions, only acting for the result. The final outcome may be correct, but do you really understand the emotions within it?”
That night, as snowflakes fell over the bridge, Hiratsuka Shizuka woke him from his confusion with those words. Hikigaya finally realized and reflected on his own problems, preparing to open his heart to the Service Club the next day.
“If only I could redo everything.”
A shooting star unexpectedly streaked across the night sky. Hikigaya halted in place, murmuring to himself.
Then, the next morning, Hikigaya woke up in horror to find that everything around him had changed!
His body and age had regressed—he had turned into a second-year middle school student at Chiba Sobu Middle School. At the same time, his interpersonal relationships had been “reset.” There was no trace of Hayama Hayato, Miura Yumiko, or their clique. Even Yukinoshita Yukino and Yuigahama Yui did not exist—or rather, had the “meeting” not yet happened?
However, there were two familiar names.
Yukinoshita Haruno—he had actually become classmates with her?!
And Hiratsuka Shizuka—who had inexplicably become a teacher at Sobu Middle School.
The Youth Version of the Demon King and the Arranged Marriage Overlord.
On a side note, middle-schooler Hikigaya still experienced a car accident upon entering middle school (tragic)!
While his school relationships had undergone drastic changes, his family dynamic remained the same. He was still at the bottom of the hierarchy, and Komachi was still his adorable little sister.
Just like in those cliché light novel settings, it felt as though he had traveled back in time via a time machine, but the “past” had been overwritten by another world line!
Had he actually transmigrated into another parallel world line?!
Hikigaya tried every method he could think of—even going to shrines and temples to “pray”—but to no avail. He couldn’t find a single clue to “returning” to his original world. In the end, nearly in despair, he confided everything to Hiratsuka-sensei—only to be hastily tied up and sent to the hospital by her.
Hikigaya still remembered—there was a slightly chubby, middle-aged doctor with a frog-like face who spewed a bunch of setting-like nonsense straight out of a light novel, confidently declaring, “I’m a professional.”
Then, Hikigaya was diagnosed with Adolescence Syndrome, a type of mental illness.
Just like that, he inexplicably became a psychiatric patient!
.
.
.
In Tokyo stood the prestigious Advanced Nurturing High School, one of the top national institutions in the country. Despite being a public school, it was renowned for its near-100% university admission and employment rates, producing numerous notable graduates—famous mahjong players, rising sports stars, Academy Award-winning actors, and more.
While countless students would fight tooth and nail to get into this high school, a dead-fish-eyed boy wanted nothing more than to avoid it.
“Free tuition for three years? Mandatory dormitory stay, no outside communication, no leaving school grounds? What kind of prison school is this?! This is clearly a scam! I, Hikigaya Hachiman, will never go there! I have a disease where I’ll die if I can’t see Komachi!”
“Ew, Nii-chan, that was so gross!” said the lively, energetic, tiger-toothed girl, completely contrasting his gloomy demeanor.
“A-Anyway, there’s no way I’m going to that high school!” The dead-fish-eyed boy wavered for a moment but quickly reaffirmed his stance.
“Nii-chan is sometimes really gross, but Komachi doesn’t want to be separated from you for three years either. Not because I’d have no one to mess with or anything!”
“Komachi…”
Hikigaya was touched—though it would’ve been better if she had left out that last part.
Just then, their mother suddenly spoke up from the side. “The extra monthly allowance still stands.”
Komachi’s eyes sparkled.
“Ahem… I think Nii-chan should learn to be independent. You can’t always rely on family. Going to school in Tokyo is a great opportunity! Nii-chan, you have to work hard! Komachi will work hard for both of us! You can leave home without worries!”
Komachi clenched her tiny fists, cheering her brother on enthusiastically. Hikigaya just wanted to smack his money-grubbing little sister on the head!
His allowance was already frequently “borrowed” by her—was this really necessary?!
“My academic scores are good enough to enter Sobu High, so why must I go all the way to Tokyo?! Even if Jesus himself came, I’d refuse!” Hikigaya took a rare firm stance.
Their mother didn’t say anything—her expression just turned a little cold.
Hikigaya gulped instinctively, his tone wavering. “If I go to Tokyo, who will take care of Komachi? Who will do the housework? I’m the eldest son, so I don’t even need an allowance—I can work part-time to help with household expenses. This family needs me!”
The tiger-toothed girl nodded rapidly, only frowning slightly at the mention of “no allowance.”
Hikigaya desperately resisted, launching a grand debate over whether he should attend school in Tokyo.
Just kidding.
“I’m your mother.”
With that single sentence, Hikigaya lost completely.
Damn it!
A future without Komachi was not the future he wanted!
Under the “democratic decision” of his mother, the discussion over whether he should attend school in Tokyo came to a close.
