The Witcher: Lord of the Empire

Chapter 78: Battle Amongst the Portals

Lann unleashed different sword moves with exuberance. The silver sword passed through the specter's body again and again, and Tomas Moreau could not even count how many blows he had received in the short time of one breath.

Even without applying the Specter Oil specially used by witchers to contain specters, such high frequency attacks with a silver sword alone is enough to cause enormous damage to the specter's body.

The wounds flashed like spots of light on the specter's body. The originally condensed figure became illusory.

It’s almost successful!

At this moment, Lann also felt his energy dissipate as if a floodgate had opened in a dam. [Whirl], as an in-game skill, only consumes the witcher's Stamina and Adrenaline.

The abilities system on his body has been mutated and can be driven by all energy including magic power. But Lann does not possess magical power. Therefore, he can only consume more stamina.

Tired! With just a dozen sword movements, Lann felt as if he and Geralt had been fighting all afternoon, and his arms felt like they were filled with lead.

But now he couldn't fall, was fatigue worse than death?

Lann's eyes widened, and his green pupils looked fiercely at the specter's green eyes. 'I want to see which of us can't hold on first!'

The storm caused by the silver sword did not stop, and the specter was trapped in it and was swayed left and right by the offensive, unable to fight back. The green fire on its body was getting stronger and stronger and was about to completely ignite itself.

Finally, as if it had made a life or death decision, the specter suddenly opened its arms, letting the attacks hit it, leaving it vulnerable.

Immediately afterwards, an invisible wave surged forth, and the green fire on his body intensified. It seemed as if she was sacrificing part of her own body.

The Cat School medallion on Lann's chest vibrated madly.

'What the hell?!' Lann's pupils shrank. This specter could actually use magic. Could it be that her judgment was wrong? Was this sorcerer transformed into a specter really that powerful?

Lann's judgment was correct. To use magic, the specter still needed to take advantage of the body it had before it died. Now, because of Lann, this method was no longer feasible.

But after all, during his lifetime he was a mage of hundreds of years. After becoming a special specter through an astonishing obsession, he still retained a magic that was extremely suitable for the specter's spiritual body...

The Portal.

The deep darkness opened a door with a border of shining blue sparks, and swallowed Lann and Tomas Moreau together at once.

A brief dizziness was followed by a sense of weightlessness. After falling freely for a while, Lann fell hard to the ground. The part of the armor that was in contact with the ground was deformed under the violent impact. The body and bones seemed to be groaning, and the tearing and pain constantly stimulated Lann's nerves.

“Lann!” A hand lifted Lann, who was badly bruised and sore from the fall.

When Lann opened his eyes, he saw Geralt with his back to him, sword ready, facing the specter engulfed in green flames in the air.

'What is Geralt doing here? Or rather, where am I?' Looking around, Lann discovered that there were a dozen portals in all directions, and suddenly he found himself in the hallway full of Gargoyles again.

What does Tomas Moreau want to do? Although there is only Geralt in the room, doesn't he know that the witcher is much more professional than him in fighting monsters? Could it be that he was so scared by his own sword attack that he couldn't choose the right path?

Geralt asked without looking back: "Is the injury serious?"

Lann coughed twice and his body swayed. He felt a metallic aftertaste in his mouth as different parts of his body sent him pain signals.

“I can still fight, and the opponent’s injuries are much worse than mine.”

"What's going on?" Geralt asked solemnly after making sure Lann could stand up. "Why did you get into a fight with a specter? This is no ordinary specter. Ordinary specters can't burn half their body and still be alive, nor can they open a portal."

"He is Tomas Moreau." Lann tried to move his hands and feet, relaxing his muscles as much as possible, and asked Geralt: "Do you still have dimeritium bombs? Give me one, I've used all the ones I had."

Geralt without looking back, handed him a bomb and asked: "What do you mean when you say he is Tomas Moreau?"

Lann grinned and replied: "He wanted to turn his son who is a witcher into a normal human. But he couldn't do it."

"After he died, due to his obsession he became a specter. Before he could possess his own body as a specter and use magic, but I cut him into pieces."

Geralt narrowed his eyes: "This doesn't sound like a good story. Monsters with special abilities are not simple... Wait, what is he doing!"

Hearing Geralt's exclamation, Lann couldn't help but look at the specter floating in the air.

After teleporting over with Lann, the specter didn't seem to stop casting spells. The green flames on his body burned more and more intensely, and finally turned all the parts below his chest into ashes before he could stop. Even so, there was no trace of energy on his body. There were still fragments of flames burning slowly, which were the injuries Lann had caused to him.

As the body burned, the Cat School Medallion told Lann that the magical fluctuations around him were getting stronger. Correspondingly, all the portals in the hall lit up at the same time.

A chill ran from the soles of Lann's feet to the top of his head, and he felt like a big hand was grabbing his heart.

Suddenly, Lann saw a druid being thrown from the portal that was right in front of him.

At this time, he was holding a staff high and was covered in wounds; Behind him was Swade, who was in the same group as him, and most of his armor was broken and deformed; Behind them was a stone giant three people tall, with branches and vines all over its body. A Golem!

Golems are beings animated by spells, without the ability to think, blindly obeying the orders of their creators. Compared to the gargoyles they encountered before, their behavior was more rigid, but their strength far surpassed them.

The druid roared and the golem's vines suddenly glowed with green light and began to grow, entangling the great being and holding it in place.

"Great, Lannister, Geralt, come here and take this thing with me..." Before he could finish his words, the Druid's expression of joy at seeing his companions froze on his face, and slowly transformed into one of horror.

Simply because all kinds of figures began to spit out from the portals.

The portal on the right threw out a heavily armed exploration team soldier with three drowners hanging from his body, and a large group of them chasing him.

From the portal to the left, ghouls that looked like skinned children continually appeared, chewing on something.

Six gargoyles covered in blood were thrown out of the portal at the back, shouting "Destroy the intruders".

There were also huge centipedes thrown out from the portal, most of them were gray and a few were white. One of them wrapped around a soldier like a python and bit off his head in front of Lann.

Five deformed humans fell out of the portals on the second floor. Each of them had deformed mutations: some had left arms four or five times thicker than their right arms, some had pits and bumps as if their skin had melted, and some had fingers on their bodies. The toes have varying degrees of adhesions that look like meat sticks. And they all have one thing in common: amber cat eyes.

The hall, which could accommodate forty or fifty people, was filled to the brim in an instant.

Geralt did not hesitate to add a Quen Sign for defense, turned back and shouted to Lann: "Did your information channel mention this situation?"

Lann launched a Grapeshot Bomb and then rolled to avoid the shockwave before responding: "Stop talking and act. Have you ever faced anything like this in your career as a witcher? What should we do now?"

Tomas Moreau laughed wildly in the air, and the eerie voice of the specter echoed throughout the hall: "I will tear you all into pieces! Lannister, invaders, and failures!"

Suddenly, a stone was thrown up like a sharp sword and passed through Tomas Moreau's spirit body.

It was a mutant failure that was thrown out of the teleportation array on the second floor. He had lost his speech and mind, but the Tomas Moreau reflected in his eyes brought him unquenchable anger.

“Damned failure!” Tomas Moreau shouted angrily. “Destroy him!”

The golems and gargoyles instantly had a flash of light in their eyes, abandoned their original targets, turned around and rushed towards the failed mutant.

While cutting down a ghoul, Lann walked towards where Swade was, and his eyes lit up as he saw the scene.

He quickly looked around and saw a dozen drowners hanging from the soldiers, tearing the poor humans apart. The giant centipede indiscriminately attacks everything around it and even prevents the golems and gargoyles from carrying out the orders of its master. Not to mention the five failed mutants who have been relentlessly harassing Tomas Moreau.

The situation seems to be improving.

Things that Lann could notice, Geralt, who was countless times more experienced than him, naturally wouldn't ignore it.

Nearly all of the exploration team brought here are dead, leaving only Lann, Geralt, Druid and Swade. The four gathered in a formation to protect the surroundings and Geralt shouted at them: "Do you understand what is happening?!"

Lann responded: "Only the golems and gargoyles are controlled by him, and the remaining monsters fight on their own."

Swade panted and continued: "Then as long as we pull down the guy in the air, he will be attacked or even killed, right? Is he Tomas Moreau? Why does he look like a ghost? "

The druid shouted angrily: "But what's the use of killing that guy? The remaining monsters are enough to kill us more than ten times. We might as well find an opportunity to rush into the portal and escape!"

Lann shook his head and rejected the druid's proposal: "These portals are controlled by Tomas Moreau. With him here, we cannot escape, and we also do not know if the situation on the other side of the portal will be better than here."

"I have a better idea..." He stretched out his hand and pointed to the specter in the sky: "He threw me here when he temporarily opened the portal."

"He can open the portal to come here, and he can also open the portal to leave. We took him down and left him surrounded by monsters, forcing him to open the portal to escape. Then we used his portal to escape!"

Geralt frowned and observed. At this moment, the golems and gargoyles were about to kill all the failed mutants, and the giant centipede jumped between the drowners and ghouls.

The battle between the monsters seems to be coming to an end soon, leaving them little time to make pre-battle plans.

“There’s another problem now.” Geralt said. "I have a way to take down Tomas Moreau and make sure he can't fly, but how can we make sure the monsters will besiege him instead of killing us?"

Lann was already prepared and said, "I can guarantee it."

He took out an ancient-looking badge and explained, "This is a badge I bought from a wizard. When hung around the neck, it can attract enemies to attack where the badge is."

We are lucky; Although the specter's body has been largely burned, his neck is still intact."

It was one of the magic items he had previously bought from Triss.

Geralt nodded understandingly: "Then I have no problem."
