Chapter 1: The Weapon Master Shall Never Die Bare-Handed in Genshin Impact [1]
Jia Changjiang felt... just a tiny, almost negligible, bit of existential collapse creeping into his mind.
If he were to introduce himself, it'd go something like this: Jia Changjiang—Jia, as in Jax the Weapon Master, and Changjiang, as in the Yangtze Knight.
Twenty-eight years old, though if you added a plus ten in the middle, he was really just a young man nearing thirty.
He had a decently paying job, was single, and had no particularly expensive hobbies—except for gaming.
Just ten minutes ago, Jia Changjiang had been in the supermarket, buying a week's worth of groceries.
As he stepped out, backpack stuffed to the brim, the bustling cityscape in front of him suddenly turned into an endless expanse of grassland.
"..."
Jia Changjiang squatted under a tree, remaining silent for about five minutes before he slowly began to grasp his current situation.
If—probably, maybe, just maybe—nothing unexpected had happened, then...
He had transmigrated.
Upon realizing this, Jia Changjiang shakily pulled a half-used pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his pocket. Lighting one, he took a long, trembling drag.
"I transmigrated?"
His unsteady hand held the cigarette as he stared into the distance.
"So transmigration is a real thing, huh?"
Jia Changjiang's mind wandered.
Did that mean his neighbor—the one with the surname Xu—who had mysteriously disappeared might not have been missing after all? Could he have transmigrated, too?
No wonder the police found a spilled cup of instant noodles in Xu's apartment when they searched it.
But why did he transmigrate after stepping out of a supermarket? Didn't anyone find it strange that someone just vanished like that?
At least he was still carrying his week's worth of groceries. He figured he could survive a few days on that.
But after that? Did he really have to live off the land in this grassland world? Could he manage that?
Just as his thoughts spiraled into a frenzy, Jia Changjiang didn't notice the rustling movement in the grass behind him, drawn to the glow of his lit cigarette.
Soon, the rustling sound caught his attention.
"Who's there?!"
Startled, Jia Changjiang jumped several steps forward, whirling around.
Behind him, he saw it: a fiery red orb the size of a basketball with two large, blinking eyes.
"A slime?"
Jia Changjiang froze, staring at the strange creature.
A slime? So this really was another world?
Slimes were weak, right? He could probably handle one.
But wait—if there were slimes, then wouldn't there be stronger monsters, too? How would he deal with those?
As he hesitated, debating whether to strike first, the fiery red slime let out a small pop, flames bursting from its body as it lunged straight at him.
"Crap!"
Jia Changjiang dove to the side just in time to avoid the flaming slime, which skidded past him and landed on a patch of grass.
The dry grass ignited instantly, though the flames burned out strangely fast. Even so, the heat was enough to make Jia Changjiang wary.
"A freaking flaming slime?!"
(Portions of the dialogue here have been omitted to ensure a more peaceful reading experience—heated gamer language abounds in-game.)
Without hesitation, Jia Changjiang scrambled to his feet and bolted, instinctively steering clear of the flames.
First, he needed to put some distance between himself and the slime. Then he could figure out how to deal with it.
Thinking he could outrun it, Jia Changjiang soon realized his mistake. The fiery red slime was relentless, trailing him with seemingly endless stamina.
It wasn't fast, but after nearly half an hour of running, the slime was still right behind him.
"Damn it! This can't go on!"
As his stamina dwindled, Jia Changjiang finally came to a grim conclusion. If he didn't deal with this flaming slime, it would wear him down until he was out of energy—and then it would finish him off.
Even if he'd transmigrated into another world, he couldn't let himself get taken out by the first slime he encountered! No way!
If he were going to die, it had to be in a battle against a worthy foe, not like this!
Spotting a tree with a trunk about as thick as his thigh, Jia Changjiang dropped his backpack, abandoning his week's worth of supplies, and dashed toward the tree.
He'd snap off a branch to use as a weapon and beat the slime senseless without risking direct contact with its flames.
Jumping up, Jia Changjiang grabbed a sturdy branch and yanked with all his might, using the weight he'd accumulated over twenty-eight years of life to break it off.
"Today's the day I wreck you, slime!"
He roared with determination.
The next moment, Jia Changjiang felt the weight in his hands lighten, and his feet hit the ground.
In his hands wasn't just a branch—it was the entire tree.
The whole tree had come loose, roots and all, and Jia Changjiang was now holding it like some kind of oversized club.
"...?"
He froze, his earlier fear, panic, and resolve morphing into one giant question mark hovering above his head.
"Did I... mutate into a superhuman?"
As he experimentally swung the tree, a mechanical voice echoed in his ears.

"...What the hell?"
The vaguely robotic tone sent a chill down Jia Changjiang's spine.
What was this bizarre, cobbled-together thing?
But there was no time to dwell on that.
The flaming slime was closing in again, and it wasn't alone. Behind it was an even larger flame slime, accompanied by a swarm of smaller slimes.
The larger one was massive, nearly as tall as Jia Changjiang himself at 1.8 meters.
"Damn it!"
Cursing under his breath, Jia Changjiang tightened his grip on the tree, suddenly feeling a surge of courage.
"Come at me, then!"
He shouted at the advancing slimes.
"I, Jia Changjiang, will take you all down today!"
"You think I'm scared of a bunch of squishy slimes? I'm going to crush every last one of you!"
With that, he charged, swinging the massive tree with all his might as he rushed toward the slimes.
