Chapter 6
The Villainous Noble Who Kept Rewinding After Death: The Story Somehow Changed When I Committed Suicide
Episode 6: Monster
Half a year had passed since my engagement to the Grim Reaper’s Daughter, Iris Pestelrose, and I had just turned thirteen.
The season changed from summer to winter, and now it snowed almost every day in my Duke’s territory, yet I was living through peaceful days without much change.
These past six months were tranquil, and I was living my life doing what I wanted.
I had mastered everything regarding studying and manners through my life so far, and considering I even remembered the future events to come, I had no need for further learning.
So, what had I been doing? Well, I focused on increasing my magic power and training in martial arts.
Countless spells existed as knowledge in my head, but I lacked the magic power and technique to use them.
Since I was labeled a prodigy, of course, I had more magic power than other kids, even more than those average magicians. But that was merely among the average.
Compared to court magicians or high-ranking adventurers, I was nowhere near enough.
So, I practiced daily by exhausting my magic power to increase it and used magic manipulation to channel magic throughout my body, training to handle it more swiftly and accurately.
It’s widely known that using a lot of magic increases your magic capacity, but forcing yourself to exhaust your magic power can sometimes lead to death.
Therefore, if one were to do so, they’d typically stop just before running out of magic, making it rare for someone to willingly drain their magic.
(Besides, you also start feeling sluggish and nauseous as your magic runs out, right?)
However, I was the kind of person who thought dying was no big deal, so I had no option to shy away from that.
Next up was martial arts. I’ve thoroughly trained in it throughout my life, and when it comes to knowledge and experience, I wouldn’t lose to anyone.
But, I lacked practical experience, so I trained daily with the knight order.
Some might wonder, “How can you have experience yet lack practice?” But it’s not strange at all.
I had repeatedly rewound after death and gained experience from battles. However, rewinding meant that my body, mostly my muscles and reach, reverted back to how it was before training.
So when I approached an enemy with the same instincts as before, I could be quickly overpowered, and sometimes I’d miscalculate my range and fail to attack effectively.
Thus, I needed to engage in practice to correct my errors and build muscle to acclimate my sensations.
By the way, I could manipulate my muscle growth through magic manipulation, allowing me to sculpt my body optimally as I grew.
So, for the past six months, I enjoyed living a life where I did what I wanted and didn’t do unnecessary things, yet there was one hassle.
That was…
“Lord Lewis, I have a letter from Lady Iris.”
“Again?”
It was a letter from Iris, whom I hadn’t met since half a year ago.
In my previous life, I exchanged letters several times when I was trying to get closer to her.
But since deciding not to engage with her, I had ignored her, and I shouldn’t have had any letter exchanges in any of my lifetimes.
Yet, for some reason, this time, despite my neglect, she sent me a letter.
“Sigh. Did she take a weird turn again?”
“Excuse me? Did you say something?”
“Nothing.”
After receiving the letter from Miria, I opened it and casually skimmed through its contents.
It consisted of recent events, inquiries about how I was doing, and reminders to take care of my health.
(It’s like a letter from a child living far away, huh?)
Thinking that, I pulled out some stationery from my desk drawer and hastily scribbled a reply to Miria.
“Sigh. It’s really annoying. I wish they’d just leave me alone.”
Feeling genuinely bothered, I gazed out at the snow still falling outside the window.
A few days after I replied to Iris, I found myself alone at the edge of the Duke’s territory, in a forest.
The reason? I had heard reports of a certain monster sighting here, and I came to hunt it down.
“Well then, where is it?”
I used my detection magic to quickly locate the target monster.
Suddenly, a flood of information about the creatures in the forest hit my mind. I filtered out unnecessary information and focused on gathering intel about strong monsters.
“Oh, there it is.”
Deeper into the woods, heading north, I spotted the target monster, so I flew over using flight magic.
After soaring through the sky for about half an hour, I found it: a Snow Wyvern, with white scales and wings, resembling a small snow mound at first glance.
Normal Wyverns are green and classified as moderate threats at B-Rank.
The rank classification is a guideline for humans when battling monsters, reflecting the monster’s strength.
Ranks range from F to SSS, with F-Rank being the weakest, like slimes or baby goblins, easily defeated even by children.
On the flip side, an SSS-Rank monster is said to be powerful enough to wipe out entire nations single-handedly.
Moreover, above SSS-Rank, there exist mythical species of questionable reality, but no one has seen them, so SSS is considered the highest rank.
Additionally, this world has dungeons that are also ranked D to SSS.
Why the dungeon ranks start at D is a story for another time, but the Snow Wyvern in front of me? Its rank was not B but A, placing it in a stronger category than normal Wyverns.
You might wonder why the same type of Wyvern has different ranks; it was because this one possessed magic power.
Normal Wyverns attack by diving from the air, biting, and using sharp claws to slash. However, the magic-powered ones add elemental breath attacks to their arsenal.
The primary difference between A-Rank and B-Rank is the presence of magic power.
Therefore, the Snow Wyvern is placed at A-Rank because it possesses magic power.
Now, why was I challenging such a strong foe? The answer was simple.
“Eating a magic-powered monster increases my magic power.”
Indeed. I came to fight the Snow Wyvern to obtain the material, an organ that produces magic power.
For an ordinary human, consuming that organ would yield no results.
However, since I’m skilled in magic manipulation, if I could consume that organ within minutes of defeating it, I could absorb the magic power it had.
Why within minutes? Because once the magic-wielder dies, their magic power naturally returns to the world, disappearing within just a few minutes.
Furthermore, one needs to excel in magic manipulation to match the wavelength of the different magic and convert it into one’s own.
Magic varies by individual, and absolutely no one in this world has perfectly matching traits.
Thus, if someone unknowingly absorbs too much foreign magic into their body, it may cause a rejection response, potentially leading to death.
Consequently, it is crucial to manipulate one’s magic to mold it according to the traits of the absorbed magic, a rarity only a few can accomplish.
I just happened to acquire this skill, allowing me to become even stronger in this life.
“Hehe. Now come, kill me!”
With a bold stance before the Snow Wyvern, I unsheathed my sword with a fearless grin.
