The Supporting Male Characters Who Died Alone All Those Years Later

Chapter 16 - Passing the Inheritance to the Female Lead's Son (8)

The web series was a great success, and the crew organized a celebration banquet.

“Do you want to go?” He Dongchen asked Su Li.

Without hesitation, Su Li replied, “Of course, this is my first investment, a grand opening.”

He Dongchen nodded, replied to Liu Hao, and on Saturday night, he took the freshly dressed Su Li to attend the celebration banquet.

The golden hall was bustling with people. In addition to the crew members, there were many unfamiliar faces, probably all here to take advantage of the good luck and make connections.

With the two major investors present, the atmosphere became even more lively. Many people came up to toast, wanting to get acquainted, just in case they needed the support of the major investors in the future.

Several female artists sent flirtatious glances to He Dongchen, which made Su Li’s cheeks puff up with anger. She pinched He Dongchen’s waist hard.

To her surprise, she found his waist too strong, stiff and unyielding!

He Dongchen caught her hand and leaned in close to her ear with a gentle laugh. “Don’t be angry. Your mouth could hang an oil lamp. Besides, aren’t there a few young pretty boys flirting with you? I’m not upset either.”

Upon hearing this, Su Li realized, but…

She widened her eyes and looked at He Dongchen. “Why aren’t you jealous or angry at all?”

Don’t you like me?!

Su Li pouted, her eyes shining like death stares a fluffy British Shorthair, her bright eyes slightly narrowed, as if He Dongchen’s answer wasn’t satisfactory, she would pounce on him and scratch him fiercely.

He Dongchen hastily replied, “Of course I’m upset, but when I see them, none of them are as handsome, wealthy, or humorous as me, so I think, there’s no threat, no need to worry.”

Then he added, “Unless you’re blind.”

“I’m definitely not blind,” Su Li hummed. Those pretty boys couldn’t compare to He Dongchen. He Dongchen was a gold mine. Su Li thought of the little money in her account and decided to be generous. She couldn’t get mad at her boyfriend just because other women had their eyes on him.

Seeing his girlfriend’s anger dissipate, and her smiling face looking so happy, He Dongchen’s eyes softened even more. He reached out and picked up a piece of sweet and sour spare ribs for her.

Throughout the evening, people kept coming over to toast. He Dongchen politely drank two glasses, and when Su Li lost interest, he took her and left.

Feeling dizzy from the drinks, Liu Hao hurried over to bid them farewell, expressing his heartfelt thanks.

Seeing Liu Hao clinging to his arm with tears and snot, He Dongchen’s mouth twitched. He quickly had someone pull Liu Hao away.

Su Li chuckled beside him, and He Dongchen, feeling annoyed, reached out and pinched her smug, tender face. It was indeed soft and tender, just like the first time he met her.

He raised an eyebrow suddenly, his eyes full of tenderness. “Su Li, do you know what I felt when I first saw you?”

Caught in his affectionate gaze, Su Li’s heart raced, forgetting to swat his hand away. With anticipation, she asked, “What did you feel?”

Was it beautiful and elegant? Love at first sight?

He Dongchen smiled faintly. “You were innocent and silly, like the silly daughter of a landlord.”

Crack! Su Li felt as if she heard her heart shattered.

With a smirk, He Dongchen took his sulking girlfriend to the parking lot, where they bumped into two acquaintances by the elevator.

“Dongchen,” He Dongliang exclaimed, then looked surprised and delighted. He pointed to the woman in the red dress beside him and introduced, “This is Yu Le, my friend. Don’t you still have a script? Let’s not let the fertile water flow into someone else’s field.”

Yu Le didn’t expect to meet He Dongchen here. She hesitated for a moment, then quickly regained her composure, pretending not to recognize them. She nodded coolly. She knew very well that with such haughty young masters, the more you chased after them, the less valuable you became.

Yu Le now portrayed herself as an independent and elegant woman, and many people fell for it, including He Dongliang next to her. A few days ago, she had used a little trick to rescue him from being surrounded by women at a gathering, and after the rescue, she immediately turned and left with a cold demeanor.

A few days later, she unexpectedly ran into He Dongliang at a troublesome dinner party.

Yu Le knew that He Dongliang was He Dongchen’s cousin and his future right-hand man, so she felt a bit smug.

Seeing the satisfaction in Yu Le’s eyes, He Dongchen felt speechless.

Su Li looked at Yu Le and suddenly realized, “Ah, you’re the female lead whose project was stopped, right?”

We had met at the film and television city before, and He Dongchen had said they knew each other, had met once or twice, so why did she now act like she didn’t know him?

In such situations, there was usually something fishy going on!

Yu Le also recognized the girl in the camel coat being led by He Dongchen, who had left the film and television city with him before. She couldn’t help but size her up discreetly.

He Dongliang keenly noticed the strange atmosphere and scanned the three of them with his eyes before suggesting, “Why don’t we find a place to sit?”

“No need, we have a date,” He Dongchen coldly refused, then took Su Li’s hand and left first.

Watching his indifferent figure, Yu Le gritted her teeth. The web drama she had worked so hard to participate in was scrapped because of Hue Lei, while the web drama He Dongchen casually invested in became a huge success.

Life was so unfair.

He Dongliang, who had been observing her expression, spoke up from the side, “Do you know my cousin?”

Yu Le hesitated, showing a hesitant expression, but in the end, she didn’t say anything. He Dongliang remembered this and privately had someone investigate. The result? On the day He Dongchen acknowledged his relatives, Yu Le was also there!

It was a reluctant help, but it still counted as helping He Dongchen.

This discovery made He Dongliang’s mind race with ideas, but before he could ponder further, he received a notification the next day that the project funding had been frozen!

***

He Dongliang inquired and found He Dongchen’s involvement. With a grim face, he stormed into the office, taking a deep breath before putting on his gentle facade.

“Dongchen, I’d like to know, the project was already negotiated and just waiting for the funds to arrive. Did something come up to stop it?”

He Dongchen sat behind his desk, looked up at him casually, and said, “No issues.”

He Dongliang couldn’t hold back his raised voice. “Then why?”

“Because I don’t like it,” He Dongchen smiled. The project He Dongliang oversaw was an investment in a TV series starring Yu Le.

He Dongchen wouldn’t allow Yu Le to take advantage of him. Without hesitation, he found an excuse to halt the project. This TV series had the potential to be successful, but with Yu Le interfering, its fate became uncertain. After all, the popularity depended on the chemistry between the male and female leads. Yu Le jumped in and snatched the female lead role, so whether it would be successful or not remained to be seen.

He Dongliang was stunned by his self-righteous attitude. It took him a while to regain his voice, incredulously saying, “This is business. How could you bring personal emotions into it?”

He Dongchen smiled slightly at his words, stood up from behind his desk, and walked casually over to him, his tone mocking, “Cousin, before you say that, you might want to take a look at yourself. Yu Le doesn’t have any current projects, just that stale topic being constantly brought up. No matter how popular it is, it’s short-lived. What makes her qualified to play the female lead? Because you like her?”

“If you’re using the company’s money, my parents’ money, and even my own money to support the woman you like, why can’t I withdraw my support if I’m not happy?”

He Dongliang was speechless, his expression strained. He took a deep breath, trying to contain his anger. “Regardless, Yu Le has helped you before.”

“Helped? You probably have a misunderstanding about that word,” He Dongchen sneered, then suddenly, as if struck by a thought, he said teasingly, “Has Yu Le also ‘helped’ you? Let me guess. She probably appeared out of nowhere when you were in trouble, helped you out, then left coldly. Then a few days later, you coincidentally encountered her being harassed, so you bravely stepped forward to protect her, declaring ‘who dares to touch my woman!’.”

He Dongchen successfully amused himself, leaning against the desk with one hand, his shoulders trembling slightly.

He Dongliang’s face turned livid. Even he, a fool, could tell that Yu Le had played him!

There couldn’t be so many coincidences in the world; it was all carefully planned!

However, He Dongliang didn’t want to lose face in front of He Dongchen, so he refused to admit it. He forced out a smile and said, “I met Yu Le by chance, we had a good chat. Coincidentally, the TV series I invested in needed a female lead, so I made a slight recommendation. Since cousin doesn’t like it, then let’s forget about it.”

He Dongliang didn’t mention his own favoritism, instead, he turned the tables on He Dongchen, accusing him of acting recklessly and abusing his power. If this got out, it would damage his image, and there would be discontent within the company.

He Dongchen shrugged. “My parents also agree with my viewpoint. If you’re not happy about it, then just hold it in. After all, I’m their biological son.”

With that, silence fell over the spacious office.

He Dongliang remained silent for a moment before suddenly speaking up, “Dongchen, do you have any grievances against me?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” He Dongchen looked genuinely surprised.

“Why?” He Dongliang appeared deeply hurt, his expression aggrieved, his words disjointed. “We were best playmates when we were kids. I’ve been missing you all these years you were gone, and I cherished every gift you gave me, keeping them safe…”

He Dongchen raised his hand to interrupt him. “If you don’t bring up our childhood, I might forget to settle scores with you.”

“He Dongliang, were you especially jealous of me when we were kids? Jealous that my Dad was a top student, my Mom was from a wealthy family, while your dad was a rural farmer, and your mom was a crude countrywoman who always took advantage of others. Despite being cousins, having the same Grandfather, our treatment was vastly different. I lived in the city, enjoying a life of luxury. If I wanted to learn piano, my family would immediately buy me one. Meanwhile, you lived in the countryside, cleaning and feeding pigs and ducks every day. So, you were really jealous. When you saw me being kidnapped, you didn’t say or do anything.”

“Over the years, as my Dad’s only nephew, you’ve benefited from our family’s resources. Are you secretly calculating that if I don’t come back, everything in the He family will be yours?”

“I haven’t!” He Dongliang’s biggest secret was exposed, and he denied it vehemently, veins bulging on his forehead. Then, he quickly tried to cover up, “Dongchen, you’ve misunderstood. Or did someone poison your mind? It must be those who are jealous of the harmony in our He family, right? The Lin family, isn’t it? That Lin guy has always had a grudge against me…”

“Don’t act. Your acting skills are awkward, even worse than Yu Le’s,” He Dongchen mercilessly cut him off.

“He Dongliang, the wealth gap wasn’t caused by me. On the contrary, my family has always supported yours. Wasn’t it my Dad who invested in Uncle’s pig farm? How many pieces of jewelry on Aunt’s body were gifts from my Mom to Grandma in the past? And your education and current job, you’re now the respected ‘Manager He’ wherever you go, who made that possible? What right do you have to blame me?”
