Chapter 6 - Suspicion (Part 1)
This day was probably the most bizarre one in Jiang Hui’s otherwise ordinary life.
“Ms. Jiang, Ms. Jiang, are you okay? If you understand what I’m saying, please nod, or you can speak directly… I’m Frey, an intern surgeon from G-level surgery, Room 3, at the District General Hospital,” said a tall man with brown hair and brown eyes, standing nearby with a concerned expression.
Returning to consciousness, Jiang Hui felt waves of discomfort, her head buzzing, and her mind struggling to catch up.
However, her ears were quicker to react than her brain, sharply picking up on a few key words:
“Hospital,” “surgery,” “treatment room”… Did someone bring her to the hospital?! Was she saved?
Her first reaction was disbelief—had she really gotten out of that strange place? Was she now free from the unknown danger? Where was she now?
She felt that most of the discomfort in her body had subsided, especially the sharp pain at the back of her head, which had completely disappeared. The imbalance in her body temperature from before she passed out also seemed to have returned to normal, and overall, she felt relatively comfortable now.
However, there was still some lingering discomfort. Although the sharp pain was gone, it had been replaced by a strange prickling sensation, and her entire brain felt swollen, making it difficult to concentrate.
“Please get a G-A3KV4 soothing agent. Her head injury might have triggered an antigen reaction during the healing process,” the foreign doctor, who introduced himself as Frey, seemed to be instructing someone to fetch medicine.
Jiang Hui thought that she really did need some medication right now, preferably something to ease the small, sharp pains she was feeling. But when did hospital medicines start getting long serial numbers? And what was this “soothing agent”? It sounded so advanced—was it a newly developed drug?
After a while, she felt someone gently press down on her shoulder. Almost instinctively sensing what was about to happen, Jiang Hui tried to struggle, but she was a step too late. A thin tube pierced the skin of her neck, and a pale blue liquid was injected. However, as the medicine entered her body, she felt the pain gradually fade away.
After some time, the stormy waves in her mind finally calmed down, and her thoughts became much clearer. She opened her eyes—this time, she was fully awake.
“You’re awake,” the foreign doctor said, his tone now certain.
Jiang Hui felt that lying down while the other person stood created a sense of pressure, so she struggled to sit up.
“Miss Jiang, please wait a moment. The medication hasn’t fully absorbed yet. Sitting up now might affect how your body takes it in.”
Hearing this, Jiang Hui had no choice but to stop and lie back down. “Doctor, may I ask where I am?” she asked.
Now it was Frey’s turn to be stunned. The first thing this patient asked upon waking up was this? Shouldn’t she be asking about her condition? And “doctor”… what an old-fashioned term. Could it be that Miss Jiang really did injure her brain?
However, this small request was something he could fulfill, so he responded, “Miss Jiang, you are currently in the District’s Intermediate Hospital. You suffered a serious head injury, with trauma to two brain lobes. While no functional damage has been confirmed yet, it’s still a possibility. You should rest for now.”
District Intermediate Hospital? Was there such a hospital in the area where she lived? Jiang Hui instinctively felt something was wrong—everything seemed off. Many strange things were buzzing around in her mind, and the reality she was in had all sorts of oddities.
“I… I want to go home. I need to go home,” the girl lying on the treatment bed suddenly said, as if possessed. This time, not even Frey could stop her. She immediately sat up halfway, despite not being able to maintain balance, forcing her legs off the bed and sitting upright.
The outcome was, of course, less than ideal. Frey had to lend her a hand to keep her from completely losing balance and falling back down.
“You’re not well yet!” Frey said, slightly irritated. Though he was only an intern therapist, the fact that, just one year after graduating, he was already working at the District Intermediate Hospital and responsible for a patient’s follow-up treatment on his own was a testament to his skills.
However, being an intern therapist meant he hadn’t yet developed the emotional resilience of a fully-fledged medical professional. His heart was still full of passion, and he couldn’t stay calm in all situations. Faced with a seemingly stubborn patient like Jiang Hui, he couldn’t help but get frustrated—though, more than anything, he was worried.
Miss Jiang was still very young. Did she even realize that she had just survived a near-death experience and had almost lost her life that night?
Moreover, the area she was injured in was extremely sensitive. The brain has always been a forbidden zone for humanity. From ancient times to the present day, it remains something we cannot fully understand. Additionally, the brain is widely recognized as the main source of mental power. As someone who hadn’t fully awakened, Jiang Hui should have been more cautious. A single mistake could lead to lifelong regret.
Jiang Hui reflexively shrank her neck in response to Frey’s scolding. His tone easily reminded her of lectures from her homeroom teacher many years ago, and even though she had long left school, she still instinctively listened. Despite this, after all the effort she had just put in, she was now sitting steadily with her feet on the ground. It seemed unnecessary to try and push her back down again.
“Since you’re already up, let me give you a more thorough check-up. The sooner you’re cured, the sooner you can go home,” Frey said. He instructed her to stay put and not move around, then turned to a nearby small room, likely to prepare some medical equipment.
Jiang Hui, left sitting there, was still bewildered and somewhat unclear about the situation.
She glanced around at the place she was in. The so-called hospital room was large, probably around a hundred square meters, with various large medical machines she couldn’t identify placed around the room. They were covered with characters she couldn’t understand. The room’s overall design had a color scheme of white and an indescribable metallic hue. The materials used for the walls and floor gave off a futuristic feel, making the room look more like… a laboratory? And a very high-tech one at that.
Jiang Hui’s mind raced, thinking of countless things all at once. Meanwhile, the foreign doctor named Frey pushed over a small cart filled with strange medical devices. She sharply noticed one particular device, which had an attachment resembling a long needle. Under the bright lights of the room, it gleamed with a cold, eerie shine that made her imagination run wild.
Out of Frey’s sight, her hand clenched tightly behind her back, and the muscles in her slender arm twitched, as if she was suppressing a strong urge.
