Chapter 6: The Weight of the Crown
After finishing breakfast, Edmund barely had a moment to gather his thoughts before one of the late king's royal advisors approached him. The man was a figure straight out of a historical painting—stern, aged, and draped in flowing robes adorned with symbols of authority. His name was Lord Hadrian, and his presence commanded immediate respect.
"Your Highness," Lord Hadrian began, bowing low, "if you would follow me, I will show you your office and review the responsibilities of kingship ahead of tonight's coronation."
Edmund nodded, careful to mask his internal panic with a neutral expression. 'Responsibilities of kingship?' he thought. 'I'm barely getting used to being in this body. How am I supposed to run a kingdom?'
As they walked through the grand hallways of the palace, Edmund couldn't help but notice the intricate tapestries hanging on the walls, each depicting moments of the kingdom's history. He studied them briefly, trying to absorb some context about his new life. Each step felt heavier than the last as he considered the enormity of what lay ahead.
The advisor led him to a spacious office lined with shelves filled with books, scrolls, and ledgers. A large oak desk dominated the center, with a high-backed chair that seemed almost like a throne itself. The windows allowed sunlight to pour in, illuminating maps and documents sprawled across the surface.
"This will be your office once you ascend the throne," Lord Hadrian announced, gesturing to the room. "And as your first order of business, we must discuss your duties. A king must understand his responsibilities, for the weight of the crown is no small burden."
Edmund took a seat behind the desk, trying to look composed, though he felt utterly out of place. He listened intently as Lord Hadrian began to outline the extensive responsibilities of a monarch.
"The responsibilities of a king are vast and varied, Your Highness," Hadrian explained. "They encompass political, military, economic, and social aspects of governance. You are the ultimate authority in the land, responsible for ensuring the kingdom thrives under your rule. Allow me to break it down."
The king's responsibilities began with ruling the kingdom. He was the ultimate authority, responsible for the administration of the realm, ensuring laws and decrees maintained order and justice. As the highest judge, he would settle disputes among nobles, vassals, and subjects.
The next duty was military leadership. As supreme commander of the army, the king would protect the kingdom from invasions and external threats, leading campaigns when necessary and quelling internal rebellions to maintain peace.
Economic management was another key aspect. The king oversaw taxes, tariffs, and the efficient collection of revenues to fund military campaigns, infrastructure projects, and public services. He would manage resources such as land, trade, and wealth to ensure the kingdom's prosperity.
Diplomacy played a central role. The king would form alliances through treaties and marriages, and maintain relationships with neighboring kingdoms, the Church, and powerful noble families. The Church, with its influence, had to be managed carefully to avoid conflict.
The king's responsibility to protect his people was next. Edmund would safeguard his subjects from harm, ensuring security and quelling crime or unrest. A wise ruler earned loyalty through strong, just governance.
As a religious monarch, Edmund would also have religious duties to uphold. Defending the faith and supporting religious institutions was crucial, with patronage of temples and monasteries seen as both a responsibility and a privilege.
Finally, delegating power was essential. Edmund would manage nobles by granting land and authority in exchange for loyalty and military support, but he had to balance their power to prevent any noble from becoming a threat to the crown.
Lord Hadrian paused, allowing Edmund to absorb the deluge of information.
"Despite these responsibilities, Your Highness, know that your power is not absolute. The Church, feudal obligations, and the ambitions of nobles often act as checks on the throne's authority. A wise king balances these forces to maintain order and harmony."
Edmund nodded slowly, pretending to take it all in stride. In truth, his mind was spinning. 'This is insane. I was just a regular person in the modern world, and now I'm supposed to manage all this?' He fought the urge to groan aloud. Instead, he leaned forward, adopting a thoughtful expression.
"Understood, Lord Hadrian," Edmund said, his voice steady. "I will do my best to uphold these responsibilities."
"Excellent, Your Highness. You have already shown great promise by stepping into this role during such challenging times. Remember, you are not alone. Your advisors, generals, and ministers are here to support you."
'Support me?' Edmund thought. 'More like scrutinize my every move.'
Lord Hadrian stood, giving a slight bow. "That will be all for now. I shall prepare for the coronation later this evening. If you need anything, do not hesitate to summon me."
After the advisor left, Edmund leaned back in the chair, exhaling deeply. The grandeur of the office felt suffocating now, the weight of his new life pressing down on him. He looked at the maps and documents on the desk, his thoughts racing.
'How am I supposed to do this? I don't even know where to start. What if I mess everything up?'
But then a different thought emerged—one that brought a faint spark of determination.
'I've been handed this life, and there's no going back. If I have to be a king, then I'll learn. I survived this morning, didn't I? I'll just take it one step at a time.'
With that, Edmund straightened in his chair, resolving to figure out his path forward, no matter how impossible it seemed.
End of chap.
