Chapter 20: ex-wife
The warm and breezy afternoon.
In Jade Tea Room,
"Xiu Ran, you really shouldn't have divorced my brother. Now... it's just made things easier for some little girl!" Gu Mu pulled out a chair and sat down angrily, picked up a cup of tea in one gulp.
"Sister Mu, what's wrong? Who upset you again?"
"Just after you guys got divorced, my brother started keeping a woman at home; it's been six months now. For her sake, he even called me over in the middle of the night to treat her illness not long ago! Tell me, how could my brother be interested in someone like that?"
"Oh... is that so?" Xuan Ran Ran took a sip of tea, her eyes lowered with a hint of sadness... divorce was never something she wanted.
...
One week, two weeks, seemed like such a long time... After that day, Gu Ao didn't bring any women back home anymore.
The woman entangled with him turned into her...
Gu Dandan read through the questions in the book absentmindedly, twirling her pen between her fingers, while the family tutor droned on explaining the problems. Unable to resist the drowsiness, she yawned, not absorbing a single word.
Last night, it was almost dawn before Gu Ao finally let her go. This kind of activity was truly exhausting, every morning she woke up feeling sore all over, her skin mottled with red and blue marks. Sometimes, she couldn't help but wonder if Gu Ao was deliberately tormenting her this way. No matter how much she cried or protested, he would always ignore her until she was utterly worn out.
Gu Dandan scratched her head, pursing her lips as thoughts of Gu Ao made her mind wander...
"Miss Gu, do you understand this question?"
"..."
"If you don't get it, I can explain it again."
"..."
"Miss Gu!"
"Hmm? I'm listening..."
Her brain had been rusted for years, it was no wonder she drove teachers mad. But the tutors who came to their house always respectfully addressed her as "miss", never losing their temper with her, at most sighing or frowning. She knew it was all because of Gu Ao's influence. But being called "miss" by a teacher made her feel quite awkward, often leaving her unable to react.
"Miss Gu, at this rate, it will be very difficult for you to keep up. Even when you enter the best high school in the city, you'll find it extremely challenging." The teacher sighed heavily.
"High school? What... does that mean?"
...
Approaching midnight, Gu Ao finally returned home.
"Gu... Gu Ao." Hearing the door open, Gu Dandan immediately jumped out of bed and walked to Gu Ao's side.
"What's the matter?"
"I..."
"Don't stutter."
"You...you said..."
"Gu Dandan, don't stammer!"
"I...I don't want to go to high school, you promised me..."
"There's no room for negotiation on this matter." With that, Gu Ao ignored her and walked straight into the bathroom.
A moment later, Gu Ao emerged wearing a bathrobe, took out a cigarette from his suit pocket, and sat quietly on the sofa for over half an hour.
Gu Dandan tossed and turned in bed, occasionally sneaking glances at Gu Ao.
"Gu...Gu Ao." Gu Dandan timidly approached and sat beside Gu Ao, "Don't be angry, okay? Let's...go to sleep."
Taking Gu Ao's large hand resting on the armrest of the sofa, she held onto several of his fingers lightly, pulling them gently, her actions reminiscent of a little girl yet filled with an indescribable intimacy... Gu Ao slightly raised his head, a smile forming at the corner of his mouth, though it was unclear whether it was joy or anger.
Meeting those sharp eyes, Gu Dandan instantly released Gu Ao's hand out of fear, standing before him with her head bowed, looking aggrieved, "It's...not early, let's sleep..."
"Sleep?" Leaning lazily on the sofa, Gu Ao found this girl...always blushing, so timid yet exuding a fatal allure of fragility. He couldn't resist wanting to hold her, wanting to kiss her.
"I'll study...I'll study well," thinking Gu Ao was angry about this, Gu Dandan promised somewhat uncertainly.
"Are you scared of me?" Extinguishing the cigarette, Gu Ao stood up.
"Yeah...no, not...," nodding, shaking her head...her face flushed once more under Gu Ao's gaze, she was perpetually flustered in front of him.
Gu Ao lifted Gu Dandan in his arms, she was too light, barely felt.
Gazing at her rosy cheeks, his tone was gentle yet ambiguous, "Does your body still hurt?"
"Ah...yes...a bit. Can we...tonight..." Slightly parting her lips, Gu Dandan shyly leaned her head against Gu Ao's chest.
"Tonight, I'll spare you. I need to go out, don't wait up for me." Laying Gu Dandan on the bed, Gu Ao bent down, lovingly kissing her blushing lips.
Watching Gu Ao leave, Gu Dandan breathed heavily, his warmth lingering on her lips...
An insomniac night, indeed, feels endlessly long.
