The Regressed Game Director Is Too Competent

Chapter 39

The inheritance of responsibilities that began with Myunghoon was proceeding smoothly.

After all, the role of the overall director was more about taking responsibility than it was about having difficult tasks.

However, the problem was the sheer volume of materials to transfer during the handover.

The schedule had been drawn up months, no, almost a year in advance, and the amount of paperwork was beyond imagination.

Upon seeing the volume of documents to be handed over, even Myunghoon’s expression turned sour.

“Hey… Ho-jin, you shouldn’t really be calling Director Chae-young a workaholic or anything, right?”

“Come on, even if that’s true, it wouldn’t be right.”

Reflexively, Myunghoon’s words were negated upon comparison to Chae-young.

Even so, comparing me to Senior Chae-young is a bit much.

This handover is just large in volume because we’re trying to do a year’s worth at once. It’s not like I’m doing that much work.

But despite my rebuttal, Myunghoon only looked at me with a sorrowful expression and didn’t say much else.

I felt slightly weird about Myunghoon’s attitude, but I didn’t say anything further and focused on the handover.

After all, even if I tried to argue more, Myunghoon would have reacted the same way.

“Among the documents for the upcoming updates, including the ones six months and up to next April, you just need to sign them. I’ve had them confirmed and only left them pending for final approval.”

“Do I not need to review them again?”

“No, not necessarily. Since these have already been confirmed multiple times. However, from then on, you’ll need to review the drafts yourself, judge them, and give feedback. If you find it difficult, please contact me and I’ll assist you.”

“Alright. Thanks.”

“Thank me later. Regarding collaborations, you should probably follow the SFLAG’s advice, and for the popup store event scheduled to happen next year, you must personally visit the site before the start to confirm everything.”

“Site confirmation? In Japan?”

“Yes, Japan.”

At that, Myunghoon nodded as if realizing something and looked at me.

“I see now why you go on overseas trips so often.”

“Actually, I could outsource that to the publisher, but my nature wouldn’t allow it.”

Listening to me, Myunghoon nodded while jotting down notes. From this attitude, I understood why the president treated Senior Myunghoon like an ace. He’s still making efforts to learn even if he’s reached a position where he’s respected everywhere he goes.

“There’s a bit more I need to tell you, but shall we call it a day today?”

“Do we have to? Already?”

“I’d also want to continue, but it’s already past 4.”

“Already?”

Myunghoon looked at the wall clock, clearly surprised.

The clock read exactly 4:30.

“Since we have plenty of time for the handover, we can take it slow.”

“Alright, good work today, Ho-jin.”

“You too.”

As I watched Myunghoon gather the scattered handover documents and leave, I thought to myself:

‘This’ll probably wrap up in about a week.’

I initially anticipated it to take about two weeks, but because Myunghoon is keeping pace well, it seems we can finish faster than expected.

*

On our fifth day, I handled the overall director’s work in the morning and the handover in the afternoon.

During the handover with Myunghoon, a phone call came in.

Looking at the caller, it was Su-yeon.

After seeking Myunghoon’s permission, I stepped into the hallway to answer it. Su-yeon’s voice came through my smartphone.

[Is this a good time to talk, Ho-jin?]

“Yes, it’s fine.”

[Well, I have something to say, so can you come up to the 7th floor?]

“The 7th floor? Alright.”

After ending the call and heading up to the 7th floor, I found unfamiliar scenery different from my memory.

In my memory, the 7th floor was a mostly empty level except for a few rooms used as storage.

However, the current 7th floor was abuzz with activity, where builders and administrative support team members were actively working.

‘What’s going on?’

After exchanging greetings with the workers and employees, I found Su-yeon who was watching the construction of partition walls.

Hair that flowed down to her waist in gentle waves, black as ink,

Her small frame dressed casually in a blouse and skirt,

And the candy in her mouth.

Without the employee ID hanging around her neck, one might mistake her for a student, but I was tactful enough not to say that.

Meanwhile, Su-yeon noticed me too and waved me over.

“Mr. Ho-jin, over here!”

Approaching on her call, Su-yeon smiled and pulled out a lollipop.

“Will you eat one?”

“Ah, yes.”

I peeled the strawberry-flavored lollipop that Su-yeon handed me and placed it in my mouth.

The sweet strawberry flavor spread.

Looking at me, Su-yeon smiled and began to speak.

“The 7th floor currently undergoing construction will become the new SM headquarters and studio office.”

“Isn’t it too large?”

The existing 6th floor, where the mobile game development team was located, wasn’t all that large due to its various facilities, like Chae-young’s recording studio and rest room.

However, this 7th floor where they were currently erecting partition walls and constructing offices seemed, with some exaggeration, to be more than twice the size of the existing team office without any particular facilities.

“Isn’t this rather convenient? Studios will continue to be established in the future, and instead of having to move to another floor, we can simply add a few more partition walls.”

“That’s true.”

“Isn’t it?”

Su-yeon smiled cleverly.

For some reason, Su-yeon seemed to have high spirits today.

“Did something good happen today?”

“Huh? Does it show that much?”

“Not a lot, but a little.”

At my response, Su-yeon cleared her throat and spoke.

“My father called me today. Probably a member of his board of directors leaked the contents of a board meeting.”

“At first, I thought I would only get a reprimand for doing things on my own again.”

“But it wasn’t that. He just said with his usual stoic tone, ‘You’re doing well. Just keep it up,’ and then hung up.”

In response to Su-yeon’s words, I chose to remain silent.

Su-yeon didn’t seem to be expecting a response as she continued speaking.

“Anyway, I truly feel grateful to you, Mr. Ho-jin. From start to finish. If it weren’t for you, I don’t think we’d have ended up with such results.”

“It’s just that I remained dedicated to my job.”

“There are many people in our company who are just dedicated. How many people do you think live unenthusiastic work lives?”

“…”

“Anyway, from now on, please do what you want. I’ll support you the best I can from behind.”

With Su-yeon’s words, I smiled and bowed my head slightly.

“I’ll continue doing my best.”

Sensing us looking, the construction workers glanced over, but neither Su-yeon nor I paid them much attention.

“Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask something important.”

“Yes?”

“Do you have time tomorrow afternoon?”

“Time? Around what time…?”

“Somewhere around 2 PM. An hour should be enough.”

“Ah, there won’t be a big issue with that. But why…?”

“There’s an interview scheduled for tomorrow. For which you’ve been eagerly hoping.”

“The thing which I’ve been eagerly hoping for?”

“For a senior-level developer.”

*

The next afternoon at 2 PM.

Currently, I’m waiting for the interviewee in the 1st-floor conference room with Su-yeon.

Yumi, who came with us, set up refreshments and went out to guide the interviewee in.

Su-yeon next to me seemed busy with a phone call, so all I could do was read the resume of the interviewee in front of me.

Let’s see…

Age 29, male.

By senior-level standards, that’s quite young.

At this age, he doesn’t seem to be appealing through experience, but according to the special notes on his resume, he performed impressively in coding tests.

The moment I skimmed through his resume, one thought popped into my mind.

Why would someone with this level of practical ability apply to our company…?

It’s not that I’m belittling or criticizing our company.

I’m merely stating objectively that Enson GT isn’t the type of company that would attract senior-level developers.

Take our headquarters Enson Korea for instance; at this level, he could have gone there.

As I was trying to make sense of it all and scratching my head, Su-yeon, who had ended her phone call, looked at me and smiled.

“Mr. Ho-jin is also confused about the contents of the resume, right?”

“Ahh, yes, somewhat.”

“Still, it’s not a bad thing if he turns out to have this kind of ability.”

“In terms of skill alone, it’s almost flawless. The problem is why someone of this caliber would apply here.”

“What’s wrong with that? We can find out during the interview. Isn’t that why we set it up?”

“That’s true.”

As if the timing was right, as soon as we finished talking, we heard a knock on the conference room door, and Yumi entered.

“Interviewee Lee Taeseon has arrived. Should I bring him in right away?”

“Go ahead.”

After saying that and glancing to the side, I noticed Su-yeon nodding with a smile.

Yumi quickly left after noticing our expressions, and not long after, the interviewee entered the conference room.

“Hello. I’m Lee Taeseon, who applied to Enson GT this time. Thanks for giving me this opportunity.”
