Chapter 106: 106: Walking Rhine Gold

The fairies' enchanting singing lingered over the Rhine River, their harmonious voices weaving through the air like threads of light. Their joy was palpable as they encircled Kevin, the mortal who had returned the Rhinegold to them.

Their smiles were the most radiant they had ever shown—a show of respect and gratitude to the man who had resisted the gold's fatal allure and brought it back to its rightful place.

The sunlight gleamed on the pile of crystal-like golden Rhinegold. It was as if the sun itself had descended into the river, its light rippling gently across the water. This ethereal glow bathed Kevin in golden light, wrapping him like a holy aura.

Standing before the Rhinegold, Kevin looked serene, a faint smile tugging at his lips. He turned his gaze to the fairies surrounding him, their ethereal beauty enhanced by their joyous expressions.

Slude, the Valkyrie who had been by his side throughout this journey, watched from a short distance. She couldn't help but smile, her heart filled with pride for the man who had just accomplished what no one else had before him.

"What's this light?" Little Bird Neil tilted her head as she perched on Slude's shoulder, curious about the golden radiance surrounding Kevin.

"Blessings," Slude replied softly, her voice filled with quiet reverence. "This is the Rhinegold's gratitude to Kevin."

Indeed, it was a blessing.

The fairies continued to sing, their voices carrying the essence of the Rhinegold's gratitude, while the golden light embraced Kevin as if marking him with its eternal favor.

Back in Asgard, many of the gods in the Aesir Hall had their eyes fixed on Kevin through Neil's connection.

For a moment, the hall was silent. The gods exchanged glances, their expressions mixed with awe and disbelief.

"How lucky," one god finally murmured.

To receive the blessing of the Rhinegold was not just rare—it was nearly impossible. Under normal circumstances, even if someone managed to return the Rhinegold, they might receive some material gifts or thanks from the fairies, but blessings were another matter entirely.

Blessings, akin to divine protections, were incredibly special. They shared a fraction of the giver's power with the receiver. Even among gods, giving blessings was not a trivial matter.

Kevin, however, had managed to earn this rare gift.

The first reason was his ability to resist the gold's temptation—a feat that most mortals and even many gods would fail to achieve.

The second reason was his intention. Kevin didn't return the Rhinegold for personal gain but for the sake of others. His selflessness touched even the cursed treasure.

And so, Rhinegold bestowed upon him a blessing unlike any other.

The fairies' singing gradually softened, and the golden light around Kevin dimmed. He opened his eyes slowly, looking at the fairies who had stopped singing and now watched him with curiosity and admiration.

Kevin turned to the Rhinegold, its shimmering light now subdued, and whispered, "Thank you."

The fairies, their flowing dresses swaying in the gentle breeze, laughed softly. They surrounded Kevin, their voices chiming like silver bells as they spoke.

"Excuse me, but can we know your name?"

"Are you really unable to swim?"

"Where did you come from?"

Their questions came one after another, and their eager curiosity soon turned into playful fascination.

Kevin answered each question with a gentle smile, his responses soft but genuine. Yet, the fairies only grew bolder. They moved closer, some daring to touch his skin, their fingertips brushing against his arm or face as if he were a rare treasure.

At first, Kevin handled their curiosity with ease, but as their attention grew more enthusiastic, his composure began to crack. Surrounded by these ethereal beauties in translucent dresses, even Kevin, for all his mental fortitude, began to feel overwhelmed.

"Slude... Neil..." Kevin called out weakly, turning his gaze toward his companions. His pleading expression was clear: Save me!

Standing not far away, Slude and Neil watched Kevin's predicament with thinly veiled amusement.

"Why didn't you help him earlier?" Neil asked, tilting her head curiously.

"Because he seems to be enjoying himself," Slude replied with a faint smirk, her eyes twinkling mischievously.

Neil thought about it for a moment and nodded. "That does sound like Kevin."

They continued to observe as Kevin, now visibly flustered, tried to politely escape the fairies' advances.

"He was never this polite with me," Slude muttered, crossing her arms.

Neil chuckled. "Well, he treats you differently. The way he acts around you just shows how much he trusts you."

Slude blinked at Neil's words, tilting her head in thought.

To others, Kevin appeared calm, refined, and even reserved. But with those he trusted, like Slude and Neil, his true personality—playful, cheeky, and sometimes annoyingly mischievous—shone through.

After a few more moments of watching Kevin squirm, Slude finally stepped in to rescue him.

Kevin, who had been fished out from the fairies' playful clutches, looked thoroughly disheveled. His hair was untied, his clothes slightly rumpled, and his expression a mix of exhaustion and exasperation.

Slude and Neil struggled to hide their laughter as they helped him onto the white horse.

"Why didn't you come save me earlier?" Kevin grumbled, clutching Slude's waist as the horse ascended into the air.

"Because you looked like you were having fun," Slude replied with a teasing smile.

Kevin rolled his eyes but said nothing more, letting out a resigned sigh.

Once they landed a short distance away, Slude took out a comb and began tidying Kevin's hair. Neil perched nearby, watching curiously.

"By the way," Neil said, her tone suddenly serious, "what exactly is the blessing you received?"

Slude paused, her hands still holding Kevin's ponytail, and looked at him with curiosity as well.

Kevin shrugged. "It's not a secret," he said with a faint smile. "You'll see."

He walked a short distance into the nearby grass and began searching. After a moment, he returned with something in his hand—a stone covered in dirt.

With a small gesture, Kevin carved a rune in the air, and the dirt on the stone dissolved, revealing a sparkling gem hidden beneath.

Neil and Slude blinked in surprise.

"It's treasure," Kevin explained. "The blessing allows me to sense treasure within a certain range. Gold, gems, even artifacts—I can find them if they're nearby."

Neil's eyes widened, and she immediately flew over to perch on Kevin's shoulder. "Let me rub against you for luck!" she declared, nuzzling her face against his.

Slude stared at Kevin for a moment, then let out a small sigh, smiling faintly.

"You're like a walking Rhinegold," she said.

Back in Asgard, the gods continued to watch through Neil's connection. The hall was filled with murmurs as they processed what had just occurred.

"This is troublesome," Balder muttered, rubbing her temples. "Do you have any idea how much chaos this will cause if word gets out?"

Loki, who stood in the corner with his arms crossed, smirked faintly. "It's only one-tenth of the real thing," he said nonchalantly. "Besides, it's not like he asked for it."

"One-tenth is still enough to cause a stir across the Nine Realms," Freya retorted, her voice sharp.

The gods fell silent, their expressions grim.

Kevin had been blessed by the Rhinegold—a walking symbol of wealth without the curse that usually accompanied it. If this news spread, it could plunge the realms into chaos.

Balder sighed. "Let's just hope he can stay out of trouble for a while..."

In her heart, though, she knew that was wishful thinking. Kevin and trouble always seemed to find each other.
