Chapter 16: New Partner
After I fainted, Professor Cherry, Miss Jessice, Officer Jenny and so many nurses were here to help the Pokemon in cages and search for clues,
"Hey Alex wake up," Sammy said while slowly swinging me left and right to wake up, "Huh what's up,"I said with a sudden wake up scaring Oddish.
I blinked a few times, my vision still hazy as I tried to process everything. The scent of burned chemicals and medicine lingered in the air, mixing with the fresh scent of the forest. My body ached, my muscles heavy from exhaustion, but as my senses slowly returned, so did the weight of what had happened.
"You're finally up," Sammy sighed in relief, pulling back slightly. "You scared the hell out of me."
I pushed myself up on my elbows, feeling the cool night breeze against my face. Around us, the once-abandoned building was now swarming with people. Nurse's moved frantically, tending to the injured Pokémon that had been trapped in cages. Officer Jenny and her team were combing through the area, taking pictures, gathering evidence, and searching for any trace of the man in armor.
And then there was Professor Cherry, standing near the remains of the cages, deep in thought.
"How long was I out?" I asked, my throat dry.
"Not long. Maybe twenty minutes," Sammy replied before glancing at Oddish, who were huddled close to me, its eyes filled with worry. "It didn't leave your side the whole time."
I looked at it—Oddish with its oddly dark-colored leaves, it looked exhausted, but more than that, it looked… scared.
I reached out, gently patting its head. "Thanks for sticking around," Oddish let out a soft chirp, nudging my hand,
As I pushed myself up to my feet, my head still spinning from exhaustion, my eyes immediately darted around in search of Aria and Rotom.
"Where are they?!" I asked, my voice laced with urgency.
"Calm down, man," Sammy said, raising his hands slightly in an attempt to ease my panic. "Aria is with one of the nurses—she's being taken care of. And Rotom… well, he's in Professor Cherry's Pokéball for now."
I opened my mouth to demand more answers, to make sure they were really okay, but before I could get a word out, Professor Cherry turned toward us. Her usual composed demeanor was gone, replaced with an expression of pure relief and something else—something deeper.
Then, without hesitation, she ran toward us.
"Professor—" I barely had time to react before she threw her arms around both of us, pulling us into a tight embrace.
For a moment, the chaos around us seemed to fade. The sounds of nurses working, officers investigating, Pokémon whimpering in pain—all of it felt distant.
"You idiots," she muttered, her voice trembling slightly. "Do you have any idea how worried I was?"
"Samuel! What would I even say to Daisy if something happened to you?!" Professor Cherry's voice rose, her frustration spilling over as she stared at us with a mix of anger and worry.
"And you, Alex!" She turned to me, her sharp gaze locking onto mine. "It hasn't even been a week since you came to Kanto, and you're already stirring up trouble!"
She let go of us, running a hand through her hair, clearly trying to compose herself. But the concern in her eyes remained. "If something had happened to you two, I… I don't even know what I would have done!" she shouted again.
Before she could continue, Miss Jessica stepped up from behind and gently placed a hand on the professor's shoulder. "Alright, Cherry. Let them rest for now. You've had your say—let's focus on taking care of this mess."
Professor Cherry let out a frustrated sigh but didn't resist as Miss Jessica guided her away.
"W-Wait, stop! I'm not done yet! Ahh… you two, stay right there!" she shouted over her shoulder, still struggling against being pulled away.
As she disappeared from sight, Officer Jenny stepped forward, her boots clicking against the cold floor. Arms crossed, she regarded us both with a serious expression.
"Alright, you two," she said, her tone firm but not unkind. "Let's talk."
"Ok... are we in trouble?" Sammy asked hesitantly, shifting uncomfortably under Officer Jenny's gaze.
She let out a small giggle, shaking her head. "No, you're not," she assured us, her expression softening for a moment. But then her eyes grew sharper, more inquisitive. "It's just... strange," she continued, crossing her arms. "You two just so happened to stumble upon a hidden lab in the middle of Viridian Forest—right when they were packing up and leaving?"
Her words sent a chill down my spine. Now that she mentioned it, the timing did seem... too perfect. My fists clenched slightly at my sides.
"What are you trying to say?" I asked, my voice quieter than before.
Jenny tilted her head slightly, studying us. "I'm not accusing you of anything," she clarified. "But you have to admit, it's a little suspicious." She said as she looked at us.
"We're sorry, and we understand why you're suspicious," Sammy spoke up, stepping forward with a serious expression. "But we only ended up here because Alex's Ralts, Aria, sensed something and wandered off. We followed her to find out where she was." He paused, glancing at me before continuing, his voice firm. "And if it wasn't for us, you wouldn't have found this place at all!"
Officer Jenny sighed, crossing her arms as she considered his words. "Yes, that's true," she admitted. "But it would have been better if you had called us the moment you realized something was wrong. If we had gotten here sooner, we might have been able to capture that man before he slipped away."
I clenched my fists at her words, the frustration boiling inside me. She wasn't wrong—I had acted on instinct, and in doing so, I let him escape. But at the same time, if we hadn't come, how many more Pokémon would have suffered in those cages?
Officer Jenny sighed, shaking her head before giving us a dismissive wave. "Ahh, never mind. You two are good to go! We'll continue our investigation here until we find something useful." Then, she pointed at us sternly. "But next time, stop acting like heroes and call us first!"
"Yes, ma'am. Thank you," Sammy and I said in unison before turning away.
The tension had barely settled when Sammy suddenly broke the serious tone. "I wonder if I could've beaten that guy if I battled him instead of you."
I snapped my head toward him. "What?! Are you really thinking about that right now?"
He held his hands up defensively. "No, no! I meant if we both battled him together..." He hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck. "...Me and Tusk..." he muttered under his breath.
I rolled my eyes but let it go. "Anyway," I said, scanning the area, "where is Abra?"
Sammy smirked and held up a Pokéball, shaking it slightly. "Oh, I caught the Abra. Oddish is still next to you, though. If you want, you can catch it."
I looked down, realizing the little Oddish was still by my side, watching me with its strange, darkened coloring. As I reached out to pat its head, I turned back to Sammy with a glare. "Wait—when did you catch Abra? Weren't we supposed to decide together since we saved them together?" I coughed dramatically. "Ahem—I mean, mostly myself."
Sammy grinned, clearly enjoying my reaction. "Well, I did pick the better starter, so it's only fair that I get the better Dark-type. Right?"
I narrowed my eyes. "Excuse me? Need I remind you that Aria defeated Tusk in a fair battle?" I scoffed before turning back to Oddish, my expression softening. "You know what? I'm happy with this little guy."
Without another word, I casually reached into my bag, palming a Pokéball without Sammy noticing. Then, kneeling down, I gently placed a hand on Oddish's head. "Hey, Oddish," I said softly, "would you like to come with me?"
Before I could say another word, Oddish reached out with one of its tiny leaves and tapped the button on the Pokéball. A red light swallowed its form, and with a quiet ding, the ball sealed shut.
"I needed a Grass-type anyway," I muttered, tucking the Pokéball into my belt.
Just then, something floated up beside me.
[Oddish. Grass/Dark type. Shadow Pokémon.]
I blinked. "...What?"
[This Oddish was altered by cruel experiments. Its body twisted by unnatural energy. Now shrouded in darkness,] Rotom announced in its usual cheery tone, as if it had just read out a fun fact.
I whipped around to face it. "What?! Rotom! Are you okay? Do you feel good or bad? Do you have a crack on your screen or something?" Panic crept into my voice as I inspected my Pokédex companion.
Before Rotom could answer, Professor Cherry appeared at my side, rubbing her temples. "It is fine," she said with a sigh. "Don't worry about this bastard."
[Hey! Please don't be rude, Cherry!] Rotom huffed, puffing up indignantly.
"How could I not be?" she snapped, throwing her arms up. "I gave these kids a Rotom to protect them—not to get dragged into some secret organization's mess!"
Rotom quickly zipped behind me like a child hiding from an angry parent. I held up my hands. "Uh, okay, hold on—can we all just take a second here?"
"Yes, we can!" Professor Cherry said as she handed me a Pokéball.
I recognized who was in it instantly. My hands moved on their own, taking the ball from her before she could say anything else. Without a second thought, I pressed the button.
A burst of red light shot out, forming a small, familiar shape in front of me. As the glow faded, there she was—Aria.
She stood there for a moment, blinking up at me, her small body swaying slightly. She looked tired but unharmed. The second our eyes met, she took a shaky step forward.
"Aria!" I reached out. She didn't hesitate, stumbling straight into my arms.
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, my arms wrapping around her small frame. "You scared me, you know that?" I muttered, resting my forehead against hers.
She let out a soft hum, her emotions brushing against my own. Relief. Comfort. A quiet reassurance that she was okay now.
I sighed, holding her a little tighter. "Don't do that again." I said as ı talked again"Why did you even do that!" I shouted.
