Chapter 13: Viridian Forest 2

I pushed myself harder, my breath coming out in ragged gasps as I sprinted through the thick underbrush. The kid was fast, weaving between trees and ducking behind bushes with an ease that suggested he knew this forest well. I was gaining on him—or at least I thought I was—until disaster struck.

Out of nowhere, the rustling leaves above me erupted into motion. A thick, sticky strand of silk shot down, wrapping around my arm before I could react.

"What the—?!" I yelped, stepping backward, only to feel another string wrap around my leg. I barely had time to turn before I saw them—Caterpies and Weedles, crawling out from the trees, their large, beady eyes staring me down like I was their next meal.

"Are you kidding me right now?!" I shouted, thrashing against the threads, only for a Weedle to lunge forward, its tiny stinger gleaming. I barely twisted out of the way in time, the sharp point grazing the fabric of my sleeve.

[Alex Carter! Your struggle is only making them more aggressive!] Rotom warned, zipping around in distress.

"Yeah? And what do you suggest, huh?! Negotiation?!" I snapped, shaking off a particularly stubborn Caterpie that had latched onto my shoe.

The forest floor had become a battlefield for me, my arms tangled in silk and my stamina rapidly depleting. Every time I managed to rip one thread away, another shot out from the canopy above, ensnaring me further. I tried to run, but my legs felt like they were wading through quicksand.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of struggling, I collapsed onto my knees, chest heaving. "Alright, fine!" I groaned, throwing my arms up in surrender. "I give up! I officially hate both brats and bugs!" My voice echoed through the forest, scaring off a few Pidgey that had been watching the scene unfold.

The Caterpie and Weedles, apparently satisfied with my defeat, slowly retreated back into the trees, their silk strands still clinging to my clothes as a mocking reminder of my failure.

Rotom hovered beside me, trying its best to be comforting. [Don't worry, Alex Carter. The kid only got 16 Pokédollars out of our money, so it's not that bad!]

I froze mid-breath, staring at it blankly. "...Wait. How much do we have left?" I asked, unscrewing the cap of my water bottle with shaking fingers and taking a long sip.

[144 Pokédollars...] Rotom muttered.

Ahh, now I understand why Red always accepted those challenges and not just refusing them… The thought lingered in my mind as I took a deep breath, my gaze sweeping over the dense forest around me. Every tree looked the same, their thick trunks stretching upward as if trying to block out the fading daylight. The undergrowth rustled with unseen movement, but beyond that, there were no clear way for me to tell how far we had come.

"Hey, Rotom, where are we?" I asked, my voice breaking the eerie stillness.

Rotom hovered beside me, its screen flickering with a digital glow as it processed the question. [Alex Carter, according to the map, we're still closer to the entrance than the exit,] it replied.

I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "Hmm then Sammy must have already searched this part of the forest, so we should keep moving forward."

Pushing myself up from where I had been resting, I adjusted my bag and took a step deeper into the forest.

The dense canopy of Viridian Forest stretched endlessly overhead, filtering the late afternoon sunlight into fragmented beams that danced upon the forest floor. I wiped my forehead, exhaustion creeping into my limbs as ı took another step.

"Ugh, how big is this place?" I muttered, adjusting my bag strap. [From what I can see on the map, Alex Carter, we are approximately halfway through,] Rotom chimed, floating beside me.

"Halfway? I've been fighting trainers for hours!"

The journey so far had been nothing but a gauntlet. The moment I'd stepped deeper into the forest, trainers had begun challenging me left and right. A brat who stealed my money, A Bug Catcher with a stubborn Kakuna and Metapod had wasted a solid ten minutes. A Youngster with a pretty fast Pidgey and Pikachu had nearly defeated Aria, forcing us to tire ourselfs more.

It had drained both me and Aria. The constant battles, the dimming light—Viridian Forest was proving to be more treacherous than ı expected. As I walked forward, the rustling of leaves ahead made me pause. I squinted into the fading light and saw a familiar figure who was tryimg to use some leaves as a blanket.

"Sammy?" I called out. The boy turned, relief washing over his face. "Oh, thank God! Alex, you have no idea how happy I am to see you." He said while ı quickened my pace. "What are you doing there like that?" I asked.

Sammy sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Looking for a place to sleep, obviously. I didn't bring any camping gear, so I figured I'd find some natural shelter." He gestured around. "But this place is a maze. I keep ending up in the same spot."

I let out a short laugh. "Yeah, Viridian Forest isn't exactly friendly for me either. But if you're that helpless, you might as well stay with me tonight. I have a Tent ı think we both can fit in." I said since ı could not leave this kid alone at the night in this forest.

Sammy smirked. "Man, you're a lifesaver. Alright, let's find a good spot before it gets too dark." He said as the Night slowly settled over Viridian Forest like a heavy shroud, casting long shadows between the towering trees.

The once calm woodland, so still in the daylight, was now alive with sound. The soft chittering of Caterpie echoed from the treetops, while Metapod and Kakuna remained eerily motionless, blending into the bark like strange, lifeless cocoons. Weedle scuttled through the underbrush, their tiny spines glinting under the moonlight, and somewhere in the distance, the flutter of wings signaled the presence of a hunting Beedrill.

The crackling campfire stood as the only beacon of warmth against the creeping cold, its flickering embers casting a soft glow against the nearby trees. Sammy and Alex had long since fallen asleep inside their tent, exhaustion pulling them into an unshakable rest. Hours of wandering the dense forest in search of the Dark-type Pokémon had left them drained, their bodies heavy with fatigue.

Even their Rotomdexes, which had spent the evening arguing over who had the stronger trainer, had finally powered down, their screens dim and lifeless.

But not everyone had fallen asleep just yet.

Inside her Pokéball, Aria, the Ralts, remained awake, her eyes staring into the darkness. She could feel something calling to her from deep within the forest. It had been there ever since they arrived, a faint distress that tugged at her senses, growing stronger as the night deepened.

Slowly, carefully, she pushed against the Pokéball's restraints, and with a faint shimmer of light, she emerged outside. The campfire crackled softly in the background, casting flickering shadows across the tent. Alex and Sammy lay sound asleep, their breathing steady. Even the Rotomdexes, had finally gone silent.

Aria glanced around, ensuring that no one was watching. Then, moving with delicate precision, she stepped forward, mindful of every sound. She had barely made it past the entrance of the tent when a shift in the darkness behind her made her pause.

Tusk, the Axew, had stirred. His sharp eyes cracked open, watching as Aria cautiously made her way forward. He remained still, observing her as she hesitated for a moment, then turned her head toward the forest. A soft glow pulsed from her Crimson red horn, faint but deliberate.

He watched as she stepped beyond the tent and disappeared into the night.
