Chapter 43: (43) Slaying the Green Wyvern
Chapter 43: Slaying the Green Wyvern
While Erza and Cana were locked in battle with the green wyvern, Mira and Elfman also entered combat mode.
Their opponent was a Thorn Lizard.
This magical beast didn't have strong offensive abilities, but its defense was incredibly high.
Moreover, it had the ability to reflect a portion of incoming attacks back at its attacker, earning it the name Thorn Lizard.
In the natural world, the Thorn Lizard's defenses and counterattacks were effective against other creatures.
However, ever since it encountered humans capable of using tools, its population had dwindled significantly, nearing extinction.
Mira and Elfman hadn't expected to encounter such a creature here.
Knowing it might be their last chance, Mira decided that Elfman should tame the Thorn Lizard first, after which they would continue searching for the green wyvern.
"Sis, watch out!" Elfman, attacking the Thorn Lizard's hindquarters, suddenly noticed the creature opening its mouth toward Mira. Alarmed, he shouted a warning.
In the next instant, the Thorn Lizard's tongue shot out—a dark blur aimed directly at Mira.
The tongue was its primary hunting tool, used to latch onto prey and reel it in.
Coated in an adhesive mucus, it not only ensured a strong grip but also contained a potent paralyzing agent.
Once struck, prey would become completely immobilized within seconds, ready to be swallowed.
But Mira wasn't ordinary prey.
With her extensive combat experience and knowledge of various creatures and demons, she anticipated the Thorn Lizard's move.
As it began to open its mouth, she sidestepped its head and leapt onto its back. "Don't worry about me," she called out to Elfman. "You should be more careful yourself."
No sooner had she spoken than the Thorn Lizard's tail lashed toward Elfman.
This tail, another deadly weapon, was tipped with hollow spikes filled with venom. Once the spikes pierced a target, the venom would be injected under pressure, immediately incapacitating the victim.
Although Mira's warning had alerted Elfman, it was too late to dodge.
Just as the tail's spiked tip was about to strike him, Mira appeared and kicked Elfman out of harm's way. She then performed a backflip to avoid the lashing tail herself.
"Damn it! This thing's defense is ridiculously strong. If only I had a weapon right now!" Mira muttered, leaping backward to put some distance between herself and the Thorn Lizard. She rubbed her reddened palms, frowning.
"Sis, maybe we should find the green wyvern first and come back for this later," Elfman suggested as he got up, still shaken from her kick.
"No way," Mira rejected the idea outright. "Thorn Lizards are far rarer than green wyvern, and they wander aimlessly. If we leave now, we might never find it again." She urged him, "Hurry up and tame this thing so we can move on."
Without further delay, Mira's hands began to glow with an eerie black light.
In a flash, she appeared on the Thorn Lizard's head, pressing her palms against its skull. "Dark Punishment!" she shouted.
"Not good!" Elfman immediately realized what Mira was about to do. He jumped back, trying to distance himself from the Thorn Lizard and his sister.
Before he could even land, the ground trembled as a surge of black light erupted from Mira's hands. The dark energy flashed briefly but powerfully, enveloping the forest.
"Huh? What's that?" From a distance, Gildarts, who was observing Erza's battle with the green wyvern, noticed the fleeting black light. Startled, he muttered, "Is Mirajane fighting too? What's she up against?"
Without hesitation, Gildarts sped toward Mira's location.
...
Erza managed to injure the green wyvern's wings, grounding it and preventing it from taking to the skies.
Now locked in a tense standoff, Erza faced the beast head-on, while Cana supported her from a distance, continuously harassing the wyvern with magic to keep it from fully focusing on Erza.
Having recently used its acid breath, the wyvern's internal reserves of corrosive acid were depleted. It could only attack with its physical arsenal: teeth, claws, wings, and tail. For the time being, it had no choice but to rely on brute force.
Erza, having endured the wyvern's acid breath earlier, swiftly swapped out her shield.
The new shield was not only lighter but also offered superior protection against physical attacks.
When the wyvern's claws raked against it, they left only faint scratches, unable to penetrate and harm Erza.
Instead, these moments allowed Erza to counterattack, leaving shallow wounds on the wyvern's hide.
The green wyvern, realizing it couldn't harm Erza with its acid and that its wings were injured, had initially intended to escape.
But with its ability to fly taken away, it found itself trapped.
Though it wanted to flee on foot, Erza's relentless pursuit left it no choice but to stand its ground.
As the wyvern growled deeply, Erza contemplated her next move.
While her current sword could pierce the wyvern's tough scales, it lacked the strength to deal any critical damage.
At best, it left surface-level cuts. If she wanted to slay the wyvern, this level of injury was far from sufficient.
The wyvern, perhaps sensing Erza's moment of calculation, lunged forward suddenly, its jaws wide open, aiming to bite her.
However, Erza's extensive battle experience rivaled Mira's, and in that instant, a plan to slay the beast crystallized in her mind.
Without hesitation, Erza thrust her shield directly into the wyvern's gaping mouth, jamming its jaws open. In the same motion, she drove her sword into the side of its mouth, piercing deep into its vital points.
The wyvern, now with its jaws locked open by the shield, instinctively attempted to unleash its acid breath.
But as it inhaled deeply, Erza's sword found its mark, stabbing through its mouth and into its critical internal organs.
In an instant, the wyvern's consciousness began to fade. Its final thought lingered on its stolen egg, now lost to the hands of humans.
