Chapter 27: (27) Meeting the Mission Client
Chapter 27: Meeting the Mission Client
On the train, the two of them found an empty row of seats in a quiet carriage and sat down casually.
"Now, tell me what changes your magic has undergone since becoming a B-Class," Mira said, sitting down and placing her small suitcase on the seat next to her.
"It's not about changes; it's about gaining more abilities," Silver corrected her misunderstanding as soon as he sat down.
"Such as?" Mira asked, her expression tinged with curiosity.
"For example, when I was a D-Class, my magic could only animate the images I painted, and that was it—nothing else," Silver explained. "When I advanced to C-Class, I gained the ability to connect the scenery in my paintings to the real world, which allowed me to locate objects. However, the range was limited, and it couldn't be used indefinitely. I could also materialize simple objects like swords, armor, and the like."
"And what about B-Class? What new abilities did you gain?" Mira asked with genuine interest.
"After reaching B-Class, my original abilities were enhanced. For instance, I can now materialize creatures and more complex items," Silver began.
"Like Reedus' Silver?" Mira interrupted, eager to clarify.
"No, not quite the same. But... I guess you could say it's similar in some ways," Silver replied thoughtfully before continuing.
"Additionally, I can now paint an object, store it within the painting, and retrieve it when needed. This is an upgrade to the ability to connect to the outside world."
"I see. Anything else?" Mira nodded, signaling him to go on.
Silver nodded. "Of course. Another development in external connections is that I can now paint someone and link the painting to them."
"This allows me to heal their injuries or transfer magic power to them through the painting. Lastly, I can create a magical map. However, this map only provides a broad overview and can't be used to locate specific items like I can. Plus, its range is limited."
"It sounds like all your new abilities are extensions of your original ones, just in different directions. Still, your abilities have improved significantly, especially the part about healing others or transferring magic through a painting," Mira summarized after considering what Silver had said.
They then shifted their discussion to the upcoming exploration mission, brainstorming strategies and approaches. Before they knew it, several hours had passed.
...
When they got off the train, Silver placed Mira's small suitcase on the ground and stretched. "I didn't expect sitting on a train for a few hours to be so uncomfortable. My whole body feels stiff."
"It's already getting late. Let's rest in this town for the night and head out on the mission tomorrow," Mira suggested, glancing up at the sky.
"No need for that." Silver immediately dropped his stretching posture and shook his head in disagreement. "It's just an exploration of some ruins. I can finish it by painting a map; there's no reason to wait until tomorrow."
"Fine. But first, I'll go to the mission client and get more details," Mira said, stopping a station employee to ask, "Where's this town's security office?"
"Security office?" The employee looked at Mira in confusion.
At that moment, Silver approached, carrying Mira's suitcase, and quickly explained, "We're wizards from Fairy Tail. We've accepted a mission posted by the town's security office, and we're here to gather details about the task."
"Oh, I see!" The station worker nodded in understanding. "When you exit the train station, you'll see a main road directly in front of you. Follow that road straight to its end, then turn left. Walk about 500 meters, and you'll find the tallest and most luxurious building in the town. Across from that building is the security office."
"Thank you!" Silver quickly expressed his gratitude upon receiving the directions.
"No problem. You'd better hurry, though. The security office staff usually leave pretty early. If you're too late, you won't find anyone there and will have to stay overnight and visit tomorrow," the worker explained with a friendly smile. "But keep in mind, they don't start work until after 10 a.m. anyway..."
Leaving the train station, Silver and Mira walked along the main road the station worker had directed them to.
Mira glanced around and said with an incredulous expression, "I can't believe it. The people here are just like you—they don't start working until after ten. Honestly, were you living near here before?"
Silver rolled his eyes and retorted, "How could that be? Where I lived before is far away—so far that it's impossible to reach."
"Yeah, yeah," Mira replied dismissively. "You've said this dozens of times already. I can recite it by heart now: 'A beautiful, spherical world floating in the night sky...'"
"Alright, alright, I get it. You don't believe me," Silver cut her off as soon as she started mimicking his past descriptions.
"Of course not. Who would believe something like that?" Mira shot him a glance and continued, "Why don't you just admit you don't remember where you used to live? There's no need to make up all these wild stories."
As they spoke, the two arrived at the town's security office.
Fortunately, they had good timing—the office wasn't empty yet, and more importantly, the mission client was still there.
He had just been preparing to head home when they stopped him.
"So, you're the wizards who accepted the mission? Come, have a seat," the client said after hearing their purpose.
He sat down and gestured to the sofa opposite him. "This mission originates from a village near our town. A few years ago, a massacre occurred in another nearby village, which has since been abandoned."
"Recently, lights were seen coming from the abandoned village, and some villagers who went to investigate reported seeing strange black shadows."
"The villagers are afraid that some terrible monster or the malevolent force behind the massacre has returned."
"So, they reported the situation to the town. As you can imagine, mobilizing the military is expensive, so after some discussion, we decided to post this as a mission for the mage guild."
"I see," Silver nodded. "In that case, please tell us where the village we need to explore is located."
"You'll need to head east," the client began but paused momentarily, pointing in a direction.
"That way is east. If you leave town heading east, you'll find a small path. Follow it, and you'll reach the village where the report came from. Once you arrive, you can ask the villagers for more details..."
