Chapter 19: (19) Mira's Unexpected Anger
Chapter 19: Mira's Unexpected Anger
Silver set up a few chairs and poured drinks for everyone. Hearing her name mentioned, he turned to Cana with a puzzled expression.
"If you're ready, why not come along with me on a mission?" Cana asked with a bright smile, inviting Silver.
Before Silver could respond, Natsu, ever eager for excitement, jumped in and asked Cana, "Can Happy and I come along too?"
Cana shot him a sideways glance and decisively shook her head. "No way. I don't want to get yelled at."
"Tch, so stingy," Natsu grumbled, crossing his arms in frustration, his face clearly displaying his dissatisfaction. Meanwhile, Happy raised a small paw and exposed Natsu's shortcomings: "Aye~! Natsu always causes trouble. Most of the mission rewards end up being used to pay for the damages he causes."
"I've been trying to be careful, Happy! But when I'm fighting enemies, things just get destroyed accidentally!" Natsu protested, his frustration overriding his earlier sulking.
It was true—Natsu's Fire Dragon Slayer Magic was incredibly destructive. Early in his career, the damages he caused often outweighed his earnings, requiring the guild master to cover the costs. Without the guild's support, Natsu might've starved long ago.
"If it's not too troublesome, I don't mind," Silver said after Natsu finished explaining. Having completed his preparations over the past few days, he had no pressing work left, and delaying his drawing projects wouldn't hurt.
"Don't worry, it's nothing troublesome. You won't even need to fight," Cana assured him, her smile growing even brighter. Her expression made Silver wonder if she had set a trap for him.
However, recalling his trust in Cana and her usual straightforward nature, he decided not to overthink it.
"When do we leave?" Silver asked.
"Tomorrow morning at the guild," Cana replied simply.
...
The next morning, Silver arrived at the guild early.
"Well, this is a surprise! You're here so early. Finished all your preparations?" Jet greeted him as Silver walked in.
Jet, dressed in a yellow outfit with a matching wide-brimmed hat, was a year younger than Silver and the same age as Natsu, Gray, and Elfman.
His magic, "High speed," allowed him to move incredibly fast. He often hung out with Droy and Levy and had teamed up with them six months ago to form the Shadow Gear team.
"Morning, Jet. What brings you here so early? You're usually one of the last to arrive. Are you gearing up for a mission today?" Silver asked, scanning the guild and noticing the absence of Droy and Levy.
"I'm always up early; I just train before coming here. But I twisted my ankle last night, so no training today. That's why I'm here so early," Jet explained with a shake of his head.
"I see. Does Droy get up early too? You guys always seem to arrive together," Silver remarked.
Before Jet could answer, Cana's voice called out behind them, "Didn't expect you to show up this early. I thought I'd have to drag you out of bed after accepting the mission."
Silver rolled his eyes and retorted without turning around, "What are you talking about? I'm always early when there's a mission."
Cana didn't respond, instead walking past him to the mission board to pick up the assignment.
As Silver and Jet watched her walk away, another voice chimed in from behind, "Good morning, Jet, Silver."
The two turned around abruptly to see Levy standing there with a cheerful smile.
"Levy!" Jet's mood lifted instantly upon seeing her. Silver, noticing Jet's enthusiasm, couldn't help but smirk.
He was well aware that both Jet and Droy had feelings for Levy, but it seemed their rivalry started as early as this.
"Good morning, Levy," Silver greeted. "When did you get here? Were you with Cana?"
"Yep," Levy replied brightly. "We live in the dorms, and we just happened to leave our rooms at the same time this morning, so we came together. Erza was supposed to join us, but she went to the nearby forest instead…"
Levy was still talking when Cana returned with a mission request in hand. Seeing the paper in Cana's hand, Levy clapped her hands in realization and said, "Ah, so that's why Silver is here so early today. He's going on a mission with Cana."
Hearing Levy's remark, Silver's lips twitched slightly.
He began wondering if he should start coming to the guild earlier in the future.
At that moment, Cana, overhearing the conversation, chuckled and said, "Exactly. When else have you ever seen him at the guild before ten in the morning unless it's for a mission?"
"And even when he does come, he just lounges lazily on the table. He won't budge until the afternoon," another voice chimed in from behind the group.
Turning around, they saw Mira, Elfman, and Lisanna standing there.
The one speaking was Mira, who now had a dark expression as she glared at Silver. "If you're going on a mission, stop dawdling and get going already."
After saying that, Mira's expression softened, and she cheerfully began greeting everyone else as though nothing had happened.
"Hey, Elfman, what's with Mira?" Silver whispered, clearly sensing that she was angry with him.
But the problem was, he had no idea what he had done to upset her. Hoping for some insight, he turned to Elfman for help.
"Uh… I'm not really sure," Elfman replied, scratching his head. "She was fine when we left the house. I don't know why she's mad now."
"I know why," Lisanna said with a mischievous grin, covering her mouth as she giggled softly. She leaned in close and whispered to Silver, "It's because you turned down Sis Mira's mission invitation a few days ago but accepted Cana's yesterday. That's why she's mad at you."
"Huh?" Silver was stunned. "But when I go on missions with Mira, I'm basically just deadweight. It's not like she really needs me. At most, I just carry the tent and cooking equipment…"
Before Silver could finish, Lisanna shot him a disapproving glare, then turned and walked away without another word.
This left Silver bewildered and Elfman equally clueless, exchanging puzzled looks as they stood there in silence.
