Chapter 9: So Near, So Far
As Eda and Luz hiked with Anne and the Plantars through the woods to the Wartwood Village,
Luz and Anne were talking non-stop about...well, pretty much everything.
And while part of Eda was annoyed at the incessant chatter,
she was also glad that Luz was making a new friend not a minute in a new realm.
(As well as the fact that said new friend was also her son's apparent girlfriend,
and was proving to be a pretty decent person thus far.)
"So, You're trapped in a medieval fantasy adventure, too?!" inquired Anne.
"Mmh, less of a medieval fantasy, and more of a kid-friendly hellscape on top of a giant carcass, but...yep!" replied Luz.
"oh...So Ollie WASN'T joking about that."
Eda chortled, amused at Anne's nickname for her son. "Anne?"
Anne looked at her boyfriend's mother. "ye-yeah, Ms. Clawthorne?"
"Well, First: call me 'Eda.' Ms. Clawthorne was what they always called my sister." began Eda.
"Secondly: Tell me more about my son. How is he doing in this world, and how did you two meet?"
Anne blushed, feeling awkward around the silver haired woman.
"well...I first met Ollie when he saved Me, Sprig and a Frog Girl named Maddie from a Giant Snake."
"Was it as big as that Badgeetle we fought earlier?" asked Luz.
"BIGGER. We nearly died back then, until Ollie swooped in like Darkman* (Author Note: *she means Batman.)
and sent that monster packing with the most amazing display of magic I had ever seen."
Eda smiled with pride. "That's my boy."
Eda then frowned. "Although, he does have a..."condition" that makes spellcasting difficult for him."
Anne frowned. "yeah...I know. and, he has passed out more times than I care to recall.
But he's alot gotten stronger than he used to be, and doesn't even need those Elixirs all that much anymore."
"You have Elixirs here?" questioned Eda.
"not really. Olivier makes his own with what he can find." answered Anne.
Luz looked at Eda. "Hey, how come YOU never make your own Elixirs?"
"You know WHY, Luz..." spoke Eda. "The ingredients to mix them are too dangerous to collect."
Luz blushed as she recalled a distant memory. "oh...heh-heh, right. I forgot."
Hop Pop chortled at this. "Dangerous Ingredients." That sure sounds familiar...RIGHT, ANNE?"
Anne scowled at her surrogate grandfather.
"So...my son is happier, now?" continued Eda.
Anne looked back to Eda. "He didn't used to be...BUT, yeah: He is.
It was hard at first, SO HARD getting him to socialize. but, he eventually did open up to us."
Eda smiled, feeling like a heavy weight had been lifted off her shoulders.
"I take it then you know about..."what happened to him."
Anne looked down, a sad look on her face. "yeah...he told me."
Luz looked confused. "I...think I am missing some context here."
Eda looked at Luz...and sighed. "my son...he was half-witch. and, he was bullied because of it."
"ohhh..." emoted Luz, starting to understand.
Anne then frowned. "yeah...Ollie told me how because he was also half-human,
he had round ears like you and me, and didn't even have a...what did he call it?"
"a Bile-Sac." answered Polly.
Anne shuddered. "still not crazy about that name."
Eda exhaled sharply. "I thought nothing of it since bullying was common at school." continued Eda.
"until one day...one of those bullies actually attacked him, and HURT him. Physically, and Emotionally."
Luz stared at Eda. "what do you mean by that?"
"His ears got cut off." answered Anne, an edge in her voice.
"¿¡QUÉ!?" exclaimed Luz, shocked (and appalled.)
Eda stopped to wipe a tear away. "I could've prevented all that...if only I hadn't been so irresponsible.
But I let...THEM, hurt my baby boy. and I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for that (one of many regrets that I have.)"
Luz looked at her mentor. "is THAT why you didn't want me to attend Hexside?"
"It was one of the reasons, yes." answered Eda.
"Olivier was once like you, Luz. He was cheerful, optimistic and friendly to everyone.
But *THEY* changed him, took away his innocence...and I didn't want that to happen to you."
Luz smiled, touched that her mentor cared that much for her.
"Oliver DID used to be distrustful of just about everyone." spoke Sprig. "He even avoided Anne at first, but Now we're all pals!"
"though, he can still be wary of new faces." added Hop Pop.
"which ironically, makes him an ideal Wartwood citizen, based on out Town Motto."
"But, the point is: he is better than he used to be when he first arrived here." said Anne.
"He smiles, and laughs more. and now uses his magic to protect Wartwood, instead of hiding from everyone."
Eda then smiled at Anne. "in that case (*Eda hugs Anne*) Thank you, Anne Boonchuy...for helping my boy."
Anne blushed, but smiled back at Eda. "It's no biggie. I'll ALWAYS be there for him...I love him."
"and you have no idea how good it is to hear that." said Eda, releasing Anne.
Anne smiled...and then her eyes lit up. "HEY!, I've got an idea!"
"What?" asked Luz.
Anne then drew out her smartphone. "Let's all huddle together, and take a quick picture!"
"Shouldn't we wait until Olivier is with us before-"
"YEAH!, LET'S DO IT!" exclaimed Luz.
Eda shrugged. "oh, why not?"
Eda and Luz then stood together, and made a pose as Anne snapped a picture.
Anne then snapped another picture with Herself in the frame, and another with the Plantars included.
"Looking great!" said Anne, examining the new photos in her phone.
Luz brought out a device that resembled a phone, but also looked like a scroll.
"dang, my Penstagram phone don't work in this realm." said Luz.
"Yeah, Ollie couldn't get his to work either." said Anne.
"But, he DOES have a human phone like mine that he got from his mom!"
"He-ey!, I remember that!" said Eda. "I was gonna sell it, but I couldn't get it to work.
So I gave it to Olivier instead of junking it, since he was interested in it at the time."
"Glad you didn't trash it, since we were able to get it working again." said Anne.
Luz stared at Anne. "Really?, HOW?, I thought this place was like in the Dark Ages, or something."
Anne paused as she briefly recalled just how she was able to 'charge-up' Olivier's phone.
"Eh, the LESS you know about that better." said Anne.
"Oh, WAIT!, I have another idea: Let's all have a sleepover tonight!"
Anne looked to Hop Pop. "CAN WE, HOP POP!?"
The old, orange frog looked unsure. "Uh, I-I-I don't know Anne.
We need to get permission from, uh...eh, what did you say your name was?"
Eda was mildly annoyed, but smiled anyway. "Edalyn, the Owl Lady. the baddest bitch on the Boiling Isles!"
"WHAT?!"
"I said, I'm the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles." said Eda (snickering.)
"But you can call me Eda. you weird, surprisingly attractive little frog-man."
Eda then winks, and clicks her tongue as she make double double guns.
Hop Pop blushes hotter than the surface of the sun (Author Note: yes, Matt Braly ACTUALLY wrote this. XD)
"Oh! Hehe, weeell I, ah... hehehe... I, ah, um... oh, hehehe, I... goodness... weh, well.. huh..."
Both Anne and Luz grimaced at this.
Just then, a portal materialized and begins to flicker, and waiver.
"Uh, Luz, Eda? Is your portal supposed to do that?" spoke Sprig.
Luz gasps in horror. "Oh-no! We're out of time! (*looks at Eda*) I told you this thing would be unstable!"
Eda gazed at the portal in equal horror. "no...NO-NO-NO, NOT NOW! (*shouting*) I HAVEN'T SEEN MY SON YET!"
Despite Eda's protests, the portal began to suck Eda and Luz in like a vacuum
(yet, Anne and the Plantars were not affected and only watched in horror as their new friend struggled.)
"I'm sorry Anne...it's seems we've got to go." spoke Luz, sadly.
"No! Luz, don't you dare go!" exclaimed Anne, grabbing Luz by both her hands.
The pair clasped hands again, both tearing up.
"In another life, Anne." spoke Luz. "we'll have that sleepover...In another life!"
"Like, some kind of...I don't know...alternate universe?" spoke Anne.
"Weird thing to say. But, I was mainly thinking of us finding each other in the Human Realm." said Luz.
"That works, too...I guess." said Anne.
As Luz nods tearfully, Eda maintains her grip onto Luz. "Anne...b-before we go, I want you to promise me something."
Anne looks at her boyfriend's mother. "anything."
"Take care of my son...don't let ANYTHING happen to him." said Eda, almost pleading.
"He is...my whole world. but even if I never see him again, I will be at peace knowing he is safe, and happy."
Anne teared up. "I will...I promise. I'll protect him 'til my last breath."
Eda smiled. "I don't want you going THAT far...but, thank you. You're a good kid."
As the portal's pull grew stronger, Eda shut her eyes as more tears fell.
"tell Olivier I was here." said Eda. "Tell him...that I love him, I miss him. and I am sorry."
Anne grimaced, shutting her eyes as her own tears fell. "I will. And Luz..."
Luz looks to Anne one last time. "...never give up. You can do it. We're both gonna find a way home. I just know it."
Luz smiled, despite her tears. "You got that right. Take care Anne. give my love to Oliver for me...and, I love your hair!"
Anne smiled, despite her own tears. "Thanks...and, I will."
Anne held onto Luz for as long as she could...but at last, Luz slipped from her grasp.
The Witch and her Apprentice were then sucked into the portal, which disappeared in a pulse of energy.
Back in the Demon Realm...Luz and Eda stand where the portal once was.
Eda then fell to her knees, her head hanging low as she quietly sobbed.
Luz did her best to fight her own tears as she approached, and hugged Eda from behind.
"i'm sorry, eda...i'm so sorry." said Luz.
"no...it wasn't your fault." said Eda, her voice somber.
"I'M the one who screwed the spell up. If I had only listened to you, then-"
Eda stopped, unable to continue what she was saying.
"If only we had more time...You could've seen him again." said Luz.
"yeah...but at least I know he is alive, and okay." said Eda.
"I've been so scared for him. Fearing he was lost, and all alone...or DEAD."
Eda then forced herself to smile. "but...he isn't. He has people taking care of him."
Eda then turned and looked at Luz. She smiled, despite the tears in her eyes. "I think I'll FINALLY be able to get some sleep tonight."
Luz smiled. "I guess some good DID come from all this."
"yeah..." said Eda, touching Luz' shoulder. "you did good, kid...I'm proud of you."
Eda then paused...and finally pulled Luz into a hug (which surprised Luz.) "thank you, Luz...I needed this."
Luz smiled again, then hugged Eda back. "thank you, Eda."
Eda then exhaled, released Luz and stood back up.
"Well...that was something. What do you say we go find King, and figure out dinner?" said Eda (now back to normal.)
Luz frowned, still feeling sad. "another human girl...in another world like ME."
The Hispanic girl then wiped a tear away. "I didn't even get a memento to remember her by."
"Oh, I wouldn't say that..." Eda then pulls out Hop Pop's wallet.
"Eda!, Did you steal that poor frog-man's wallet!?" exclaimed Luz, flabbergasted.
"Sorry, I couldn't help it." said Eda. "It was just right there...BEGGING to be snatched!"
"oh, well now we REALLY need to go back to Amphibia and return it!" exclaimed Luz.
Luz then looked down at what was left of the Glyph where she cast her portal spell.
She then sighed, realizing how slim her chances were of recreating her completely random spell.
"Maybe another day, Luz." said Eda, patting Luz on the back. "...Maybe another day."
Luz exhaled sharply, feeling like such a failure. Eda then opened Hop Pop's wallet to examine the contents.
She pocketed some copper coins, but also took out some photos. "here..." said Eda, handing Luz one of the pictures.
"What is it?"
"a Memento." answered Eda.
Luz took the photo...which was of Anne Boonchuy with Sprig and Polly.
She smiled, hugging the photo before storing it away in her pocket.
*good luck, Anne...I hope you find your way back home.* spoke Luz.
Eda smiled...and then looked at the other photo. It was of Anne as well,
only she was dressed as if attending a Grom (or, something similar to it.)
And, with her was Olivier. Who indeed looked much happier than Eda remembered.
*i love you, son. be safe...and keep making mama proud.*
Meanwhile, just nearby the Owl House, Amity paces in front of Tinella Nosa (AKA "Tiny Nose")
"I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna talk to her." spoke Amity, clearing her throat to speak.
"Hey, Luz. Remember that kiss thing? Well, I don't! (*Laughs nervously*) We can just, go back to normal, right?
Hey, do you wanna help me study for uh...Titan, I forgot what kind of magic I use."
"You look nauseous." said Tiny Nose.
"I am!, but I shouldn't be." exclaimed Amity, frustrated.
"I faced a Slitherbeast before, and I barely broke a sweat. Now look at me!"
Amity lifts up her arms, revealing very sweat-stained armpits on her shirt.
"No, I'm Amity Blight. I can do this. I'm gonna walk right up to Luz, and say-"
"Oh, there she is." said Tiny Nose.
Luz and Eda are walking back from their trip in the distance.
Amity grimaces, her eyes nearly popping out. "I-GOTTA-GO!"
Amity dashes back into the woods before Luz knew she was even there.
