Chapter 2: Eda and Son
[NOTICE: Takes Place Eight Years Before Episode 01: "A Lying Witch and a Warden"]
It was late in the afternoon when King walked from the kitchen,
carrying a plate with a tower of food in his stubby paws as he entered the living room.
In said room was a young boy with bushy, auburn hair who was sitting on the floor.
He stared at a lone suitcase with wide eyes that were blue on one side, and gold on the other.
"Have you been sitting there all this time!?" spoke King.
Olivier nodded quickly. "Mm-Hm. I want to be here when mama gets home."
"You know Eda always gets back from the human realm on time." said King,
as he sat down with his place of food. "Isn't there something else you'd rather be doing?"
"no." said Olivier, bluntly.
King sighed as he began to eat his lunch.
At that moment, the suitcase opened up and a door with a single large eye materialized.
Olivier quickly stood up, and watched as a silver hair woman walked through the door carrying a large bag.
"Hey, Everyone.." spoke Eda. "I'm BAAAAACK!"
"MAMA, YOU'RE HOME!" exclaimed Olivier, excited.
Eda smiled as she dropped her bag and knelt down to the boy's level.
Olivier ran up, and hugged the witch..who smiled as she hugged him back.
"and, how is my little 'Sun & Moon' doing today?" spoke Eda.
"I'm doing GREAT!" said Olivier, happily. "I've been waiting for you to come back!"
"Yeah, I knew you were.." spoke Eda, as she reached into a smaller bag
that she was carrying over her arm. "which is why I got you something special."
Eda then pulled out a black device with a large screen and buttons.
"OOOO!, What is it?!" asked Olivier, astonished.
"It's a magical black screen that reflects Joy and Frustration." answered Eda
[Author Note: Eda didn't know the device in question was a PlayStation Portable]
"Have fun, kiddo." said Eda, as she tossed the device into Olivier's hands.
"Thanks, mom!" exclaimed the happy boy. "Can I play with it now?"
"Not just yet, baby." said Eda. "Mama needs help sorting through all these human things.
Most of it is junk, but SOME of it might be sellable on the market."
"Okay, Mama." said Olivier, as he and Eda dug through the various items in the bag.
After about fifteen minutes had passed, the sorting was finished. Leaving Eda with a bag that was now half full, and much lighter.
"Well, time to go sell this stuff at the market." said Eda, as she stood up with her bag.
"You're leaving already?" spoke Olivier.
Eda looked down at the boy. "I'm sorry, baby. But, I'm already late enough as it is."
Olivier looked down. a sad expression on his face. Eda tried not to look..but, her gaze fell on the boy anyway.
..and, with just one look, her normally rock solid resolve turned to mush.
"oh..shoot." muttered Eda. "(*deep sigh*)..OKAY. you can come with me to the market."
Olivier looked up at his mother with a smile on his face. "Really?!, YOU MEAN IT!?"
"Only if you STAY where I can see you, and DO NOT wander off." said Eda, sternly.
"Oh, I will!..I promise, Mama!" exclaimed Olivier.
Eda breathed out sharply. Already regretting this decisions. She knelt down on one knee as Olivier climbed up onto her head.
Eda had a habit of hiding things in her great mane of silver hair, and ever since Olivier was a baby, she sometimes kept him in there as well.
Olivier LOVED to snuggle up inside his mother's hair. It was like being wrapped in a puffy cloud.
"You all settled up there?" spoke Eda.
"YEP!" said Olivier, whose head was poking out from the front of Eda's hair.
Eda chuckled as she stood back up. "You're lucky mama is stronger than she looks. But, we can't keep doing this forever, kiddo."
"Which is why I wanna keep doing it as long as possible." answered Olivier, smiling like a kitten.
Eda smiled, feeling pride over her son's sharp wit. "Okay, hold on tight..But, not TOO tight."
Olivier held on as best he could as Eda carried her bag of human item over her back.
"We'll be back by the end of the day, King." said Eda, as she stood at the door. "Don't make a mess."
"I cannot promise that." spoke King.
Eda sighed as she walked out the door..only to turn back and face said door.
"Hooty, make sure King doesn't destroy the place while I'm gone."
"OKAAAAY!" spoke the Owl House Demon, his voice at high volume. "HAVE A SAFE TRIP!"
"BYE, HOOT-HOOT!" exclaimed Olivier, a smile on his face.
"BYE, OLIVE!" exclaimed Hooty back.
Eda groaned softly as she turned and made her way to the Bonesborough Marketplace.
At a side street, Eda began setting up shop at her [HUMAN COLLECTABLES] booth.
Olivier was on the ground, and helping his mother unpack the items.
"Mom.." spoke Olivier.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Do I really HAVE to wear this hood?"
Indeed, Olivier was wearing a hood over his head. In fact, the clothes he was wearing
was Eda's old Hexside school uniform (which had seen better days.)
"Yes, Olivier. I'm afraid you do." said Eda. "I don't want anyone seeing that you don't have pointed ears."
"Why?, what's wrong with my ears?" asked Olivier.
"nothing..but, people in this town HATE round ears." answered Eda.
"Why?" asked Olivier, again.
"I'll tell you when you're older." said Eda. "just do as I say, and keep your hood on."
Olivier sighed sharply. "fine."
Eda smiled as she knelt down to the boy. "that's my boy." Eda then 'pecked' Olivier on the cheek.
"MOOOOM.." groaned Olivier, feeling embarrassed.
Eda smiled at Olivier. She then grabbed her staff, and proceeded get the crowd's attention.
"STEP RIGHT UP FOLKS, FOR SOME GENUINE, ONE-OF-A-KIND, TREASURES STRAIGHT FROM THE HUMAN REALM!" exclaimed Eda.
Olivier sat down on a chair, and started to play with his gaming device while his mother continued her sales pitch to the people passing by.
After an hour and thirty minutes had passed, Olivier was leaning against his chair.
His gaming device had died due to being depleted of power, and he was now getting bored quickly.
Eda had managed to sell just a few items out of all that she brought with her.
It wasn't a whole lot of money..but, even a little bit was better than nothing.
"(*deep sigh*) Are we NEARLY done yet, Mom!?" spoke Olivier, getting impatient.
"Just another ten minutes, Olivier. and, then we can go home." said Eda.
Olivier responded with a sharp sigh. He may've wanted to spend more time with his mother..
..but, he didn't know this would all get so boring so quickly.
"HOLD IT RIGHT THERE!" called a loud, booming voice.
This made Olivier jump..while Eda just groaned in annoyance. "oh, fu-(*looks at Olivier*)-farts."
The two watched as three burly men dressed in uniform and wearing bird masks approached.
"EDA THE OWL LADY. You are under arrest for misuse of magic, demonic misdemeanors-"
The guard then looks at Olivier. "Ugh, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor."
Another Guard grabbed Eda by her wrist. "It's the Conformatorium for you, Criminal."
"Would you knock it off!" exclaimed Eda. "I haven't broken any of your stupid laws..Today."
"MOM!" exclaimed Olivier, alarmed.
"Grab that kid, too." said the first guard. "He's an accomplice."
As the guard tried to grab Olivier, ducked away from his hands, ran between his legs and up to the guard who had his mother restrained.
"YOU LET GO OF MY MAMA!" Olivier then proceeded to throw his gaming device at the guard.
His aim was true, and struck the guard square in the head.
"OW!"
"Good one, Olivier." said Eda, who escaped the guard's grasp. "Now, It's Time to SCATTER!"
with that, Eda threw a bag against the ground. releasing a thick cloud that blinded everyone.
"STOP THEM!" yelled the guard. "DO NOT LET THEM-!"
The colored smoke settled..and, Eda and Olivier were nowhere to be seen.
"get away.." grumbled the guard.
In another part of Bonesborough, Eda was running while carrying Olivier in her arm.
Normally, she would just fly away on her magic staff. But, the crowds were too dense for a proper take off.
As Eda saw more of the Emperor's Guards show up, she quickly ducked into an alley.
"okay..it's starting to get hot out there, so here is what we're gonna do.." began Eda.
"I am going to lure them away, and give them the run around. YOU hide in this barrel, and wait for me."
As Eda raised Olivier up, and placed him in an empty water barrel, the boy protested. "B-But, mom-"
"No BUTS." said Eda. "STAY in this barrel, and don't come out until I return."
Eda gave Olivier a quick kiss on his head. "stay safe..mama will be back soon, I promise."
Olivier didn't like it..but, nodded anyway. "oh-okay, mama."
Eda caressed Olivier's face one final time before closing the lid on the barrel.
Olivier looked through the hole in the barrel and watched as his mother ran out of the alley.
(("THERE SHE IS!, AFTER HER!")) exclaimed a distant voice. (("CAPTURE THE OWL LADY!"))
Olivier hunkered down within the barrel, hugging his knees tightly.
He trembled, feeling very scared and anxious at everything that was happening.
He may have wanted to do something more exciting..but, nothing that would be Dangerous, or Scary.
Olivier kept telling himself that everything will be fine. This was his MOM, afterall.
and, his mother was 'The Greatest Witch in ALL the Boiling Isles' Nothing could stop her.
they won't catch her..they'll never catch her.
..but, then a horrible thought came to mind: what if..What If THEY DID!?
His mother was great, but one can only run for so long before you are eventually caught.
And, what if TODAY was the day they managed to catch her?!
Olivier may not know all they happens in the Conformatorium..but, he knew it was a BAD PLACE.
and, anyone who ended up there were almost certainly NEVER seen, or heard from again.
Olivier started to panic. He DIDN'T want his mother to end up in that place!
He loved his mother..and, she loved him. He didn't want to lose her!
Despite his anxiety, Olivier continued to wait..
and, he waited..for the longest fifteen minutes of his life. With paranoia starting to set in,
Olivier finally emerged from the barrel, and (against his mother's wishes) started to climb out of it.
He carefully peeked out from the alley, and into the busy street.
Keeping his hood on tight, Olivier took a deep breath and walked out into the busy street.
He tried to keep his distance from the various creatures present..but, it was very hard.
Everywhere he turned, Olivier was bumping into someone.
"HEY!" shouted a large creature with huge teeth. "WATCH IT, SMALL FRY!"
Olivier backed away. "ss-Sorry, I'm s-Sorry, I didn't mean to-"
The 'man' didn't look very satisfied. "Do you know what I DO to little shrimp like YOU!?"
Olivier froze. "no?"
"I EAT THEM."
"EEP!"
The 'man' opened his huge maw..which was just large enough to gulp Olivier's small body down in one chomp.
Olivier lurched, shielding himself with his arms and crying out. "MAMAAAA!"
At that moment, a blast of heated energy shot over Olivier head, and square in the man's mouth.
The 'man' screamed like he just swallowed a barrel of peppers, and ran for the nearest water fountain.
Olivier looked up to see a figure towering over him.
a woman with dark hair that matched her robes, and icy stare,
and, carrying a white staff with the carving of a Raven as it's Palisman.
"hello, little one.." spoke the woman. "what are you doing in this dangerous neighborhood?"
Olivier stepped back. "i..I'm looking for my mom."
The woman's icy expression softened. she then reached out her hand. "then, perhaps we can find her together."
Olivier took another step back. "m-mama told me to NEVER talk to strangers."
"Then, your mother is very wise." spoke the woman. "but, as I just saved you from one such stranger, I believe you can trust me."
Olivier still looked unsure.
"tell me your name, little one." said the woman, her voice soft, yet still cold.
"uh-Olivier."
The woman smiled. "My name is Lilith. Lilith Clawthorne."
