Chapter 13 - The Fourth Customer and Alcohol
Miley was a somewhat unusual dwarf.
Usually, when one thinks of dwarves, they have a strong image of lifelong craftsmen engaged in blacksmithing, construction, or art-related professions that involve creating something.
Even when they do other jobs, they tend to do physical work like being adventurers or mercenaries, not desk jobs that make your joints ache, so to speak.
But there are always exceptions in the world.
Miley, a temporary worker in the food service department of the Commercial Guild, was one of those rare desk job dwarves. (Although it was just a part-time job one day a week.)
Of course, this wasn’t such a great anomaly that it would turn the world upside down.
“What? A dwarf is doing office work?”
“Hey, don’t lie… Oh, it’s true?!”
“I’ve never seen a desk job dwarf before.”
But it was enough to elicit reactions as if they had seen a shiny dwarf discovered with a one-in-a-million chance.
Therefore, there were always surprised visitors in the department where Miley worked.
Of course, Miley was aware of these reactions, but.
‘Noisy and annoying humans have come again.’
No matter how unusual Miley was for a dwarf, a dwarf is still a dwarf.
True to the dwarven characteristic of showing no interest in fields they’re not interested in, she would ignore them without even looking.
“Seriously, what’s so fascinating about a dwarf doing desk work?”
Today too, Miley was skillfully processing documents while letting the whispers of surprised people slide off one ear, but.
Pause-
She suddenly stopped her hand amidst the documents she had been quickly processing.
After examining one document for a moment, Miley, with a bright smile clearly different from just moments ago.
“Hey! Is anyone there?!”
She shouted, holding up that document high.
“Is anyone there? Come quick!”
“What’s going on? Is there a problem?”
“I don’t know. Did something happen?”
“Should we go ask?”
“Yes, yes, I’m coming. Please be quiet while I go!”
As visitors’ attention started to focus on Miley’s voice shouting with typical dwarven resonance.
A dedicated staff member who was nearby rushed over in surprise.
“Miley-ssi, I’ve always told you. If you have any business, come to me, or at least call quietly!”
“Alright, alright.”
“You say you understand, but you’ve never actually followed it…”
“Stop worrying about trivial things and look at this.”
“Sigh, give it here.”
Sighing at Miley, who seemed to have no intention of following her request, the staff member took the document and soon realized why she had called.
“I wondered why you were shouting so loudly, it’s a liquor sales permit application that’s come in.”
“That’s right! It’s an application after nearly a month!”
Slurp-
Miley licked her lips in excitement.
Her large chest, unfitting for her short dwarven body, was trembling with joy.
“Are you that happy?”
“Of course!”
It was understandable because this was the very purpose of Miley’s work.
In the first place, although it’s only one day a week, what other reason would there be for Miley, a dwarf, to insist on doing a desk job part-time?
If you say ‘Is it because she’s a female dwarf without a beard, so her personality is a bit different?’, you’d instantly become a fucking racist, so be careful.
Female dwarves don’t particularly have different personalities from male dwarves.
The only difference is that while male dwarves cherish their beards, female dwarves cherish and grow their hair?
Then, what’s the correct answer?
“I can taste new alcohol after a long time!”
The correct answer is that she likes alcohol.
Not just likes, but loves it too much.
All dwarves like alcohol, but Miley likes it several times more than the average dwarf.
The reason she’s deliberately working this boring, joint-aching, noisy, and troublesome desk job is precisely because of alcohol.
“Miley-ssi is probably the only dwarf working here who won’t miss the chance to immediately find and drink the alcohol from newly opening restaurants.”
“I can’t let others steal the chance to be the first to drink new alcohol!”
To sell alcohol in a restaurant, you need to obtain a liquor sales permit through the guild.
This means that if you work at the guild, you can identify all the restaurants applying to sell alcohol right from your seat.
“Sigh, of course you’re planning to go as the inspector yourself, right?”
“Of course! I told you I can’t let the chance to be the first to drink new alcohol be stolen. Why else would I work here?”
And to get the permit, you need to be inspected by a guild-affiliated inspector to see if it’s at a level suitable for sale.
Miley never missed the chance to take on the inspector role herself every time. As she said, to be the first to taste new alcohol.
In a way, it might seem like she’s fulfilling her personal desires, but because she’s that much more thorough with the inspections, the guild has been entrusting her with almost all of them.
“Is there a reason you go to such lengths? Isn’t all alcohol the same?”
“Don’t talk nonsense! The taste of alcohol is different for each store, each brewery.”
Grumbling that she can’t have a conversation with someone who doesn’t know the taste of alcohol, Miley quickly packed her things and got ready to leave.
“Another restaurant will be added to Miley-ssi’s alcohol map, I guess.”
“That’s uncertain. If they serve tasteless cheap alcohol, or strange items that are hard to sell, I won’t add it.”
“That’s only natural. Oh right, this restaurant applied not only for a liquor sales permit but also for a restaurant business permit, so please check that together while you’re there.”
“What? Is it a completely new restaurant?”
“Probably? It seems they submitted both applications today.”
“Alright, I’m going there anyway.”
Miley gave a short final reply and stood up.
“The restaurant name is Omnipurpose Restaurant? I like the confident name.”
The destination was a new restaurant. The Omnipurpose Restaurant.
“Whew, I guess I’ve finished most of the preparations. Now I just need to wait for the inspector to come.”
Jin exhaled after finishing the store cleaning and preliminary preparations.
The reason for moving busily despite not being able to operate yet was to welcome the inspector who would soon arrive.
“It’s fortunate that the paperwork progressed quickly.”
The day after Fiona came and informed him that he needed to get a permit.
Jin went to the Commercial Guild without delay.
He applied for both a restaurant business permit and a liquor sales permit.
‘To get a restaurant business permit, you need to pass a test after receiving education.’
To get a restaurant business permit, he needed to receive education including knowledge about dungeon-sourced ingredients and pass a test, but.
‘Can’t I just take the test right away?’
Fortunately, there was also a way to just take the test immediately.
‘You’ve passed. By any chance, were you already working as a chef in another restaurant?’
‘Ahaha, you could say that.’
Thanks to the information and cooking skills acquired during the game era, he managed to pass easily.
Anyway, after passing the test like that, he thought he could get the permit right away, but that wasn’t the case.
‘They said an inspector would come directly to the restaurant for inspection.’
The final check is done by coming to the restaurant in person.
It was quite a thorough process.
“Still, at this point, it’s almost over.”
There weren’t any particular problems to point out in Jin’s Omnipurpose Restaurant, and he even cleaned it again just in case.
He was confident that he could pass without problems even if an inspector came.
As he was confidently waiting after making thorough preparations.
Ding-a-ling-
“Is this the Omnipurpose Restaurant? I’m here from the guild for the business permit and liquor sales permit inspection.”
“Welcome! Yes, this is the Omnipurpose Restaurant.”
A moment later, along with the bell sound of the door opening, the inspector arrived.
“Oh, are you the inspector?”
“Yes, I’m Miley, who came out as the inspector.”
But the inspector was a bit unusual.
‘A girl?’
The person who came as the inspector was a small girl who only came up to Jin’s waist.
‘No, no, not a girl.’
Logically, they wouldn’t send a girl as an inspector, but.
This inspector named Miley was just short in height, but her appearance wasn’t that of a child.
Her stubborn-looking face had the mature features of an adult, and her body proportions were also those of an adult.
‘Above all, her chest…’
The enormous chest that was assertive and mismatched with her small frame had a voluptuousness that could never come from a young child.
‘Plus, her well-maintained hair long enough to be tied multiple times, and that somewhat arrogant way of speaking.’
There was only one answer that satisfied these characteristics.
“I’m quite surprised to see a dwarf inspector.”
Dwarf.
This inspector named Miley was undoubtedly a dwarf.
“Hm? Ah, yes, it’s not common for a dwarf to take on this kind of job.”
The guess was soon revealed to be true.
Because Miley naturally acknowledged that she was a dwarf.
And as she said, Jin had never seen such an unusual dwarf before.
A dwarf who’s neither a craftsman nor an adventurer? It was a first, even including the game era.
‘Perhaps she’s one of the countless residents that weren’t implemented when it was a game.’
This unusual dwarf named Miley might also be a result of the game becoming reality.
It felt anew like the game had become reality.
Occasionally, whenever he felt this realization that the game had become reality, he would feel a strange sensation.
Whether Jin was feeling sentimental or not, the dwarf inspector named Miley started checking here and there, striding around.
“You see, I like alcohol. I’m doing this job so that if there’s a restaurant applying for a liquor sales permit, I can be the first to go and taste it.”
“That’s quite a dwarven reason.”
“Right? Other dwarves are fools, I tell you. If you just endure one day a week, opportunities like this roll in on their own.”
A normal person wouldn’t do a job they dislike just to drink new alcohol, but dwarves really do think differently from the start.
“Hmm, the inside of the store seems quite clean.”
“Oh? The kitchen is fully visible? That ensures hygiene.”
“Where do you get your water from? What, supplied by a magical tool that produces water? You’re an extravagant one. Well, then we don’t have to worry about water quality.”
“What’s this cool breeze? Is this also a magical tool? Shouldn’t you be opening a restaurant in the noble district over in the central street instead of this area?”
Still, her professional consciousness seemed normal, as she thoroughly inspected the interior of the store and asked various questions in a quite professional manner.
“Hmm, at this rate, it seems sufficient to give a pass? It’s exceptionally well-managed compared to other restaurants.”
“That’s a relief. Then, do you give me the permit mark now?”
“No? There’s still one process left!”
The inspector Miley said with a bright smile, as if she had been waiting for this.
“Bring out the food and alcohol. If I eat them and there’s no problem, I’ll give you the permit mark.”
