Chapter 5 - Newlywed (Temporary) Life [1]
It’s the first holiday after the arranged marriage.
Just before 10 a.m., Renge and I were in front of a huge building. A 12-story apartment building located in a prime location in Tokyo. It’s one of the properties my father owns.
“This is going to be a love nest for me and Hidetsugu.”
“No way. It’ll be a residence, though.”
“Well, we are not a typical couple, and our relationship has unique circumstances.”
“We’re not a couple. We’re just engaged.”
Responding to her playfu remark with a glare, Renge simply chuckled and didn’t offer any response. She seemed to be enjoying the interaction with me, if anything.
I can’t believe I’m so happy with such a silly exchange…I think I look like a clingy puppy.
I mumbled inwardly and turned my attention back to the apartment.
As Renge said, from today on, we will be living together in one of the rooms of this apartment. It’s what they call cohabitation.
When I announced that I had decided to get engaged to Renge, both families encouraged us to live together, and my father decided to lend me a room in the apartment as our new home. The reason was, “Since you’re engaged, you should live together. Having us, your parents, around would be a nuisance.”
Honestly, it’s an unnecessary burden. The engagement between me and Renge was an arranged marriage. We don’t have any romantic feelings for each other, so there’s no way it would turn out so sweetly that our parents would get in the way.
Still, everyone except me agreed, so I couldn’t refuse and reluctantly decided to move.
I wonder what my father, mother, and Renge’s family are thinking.
With a sigh, I suddenly realized…
Now that I think about it, isn’t it strange that everyone except me agreed to live together?
Both of our families are well aware that my engagement to Renge is a political one. There’s no way it will turn into a sweet newlywed atmosphere.
Why did they suggest living together? Maybe there’s a secret that only I don’t know about?
As I was thinking while putting my finger on my chin, Renge suddenly took my hand.
“Let’s go quickly, Hidetsugu-kun!”
“Wait!?”
Renge pulled my hand and hurried me towards the entrance of the apartment building. She was so excited about it that she was like a dog, happily dragging her owner along.
As I was being pulled by her, I couldn’t help but feel a flush on my cheeks. It can’t be helped. Because I’m a bit of a loner, I have almost no experience of interacting with people of the opposite sex other than my relatives.
The touch of her hand was clearly different from a man’s hand, it was soft and delicate. My body tensed with nervousness, and my steps became unsteady.
As if noticing something strange about me, Renge stopped and turned around.
“What’s wrong, Hidetsugu-kun? Your face is turning red for some reason.”
“Uh, well… It’s just that your hand, it’s…”
“Hand?”
Renge tilted her head and looked at her hands.
When Renge saw that her hand was holding mine, her eyes blinked and her cheeks turned red.
“I-I’m sorry!”
Startled, Renka suddenly released my hand. Surprised by her unexpected and innocent reaction, I stared at Renka’s face intently.
“W-What’s the matter? Why are you staring at me like that?”
“No, it’s just that you usually handle social situations well, so it was an unexpected reaction.”
When I pointed it out, Renge awkwardly looked away and confessed to me.
“I-I have no choice. I’ve hardly ever held hands with a man.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. So, that makes Hidetsugu-kun special, right?”
My heart skipped a beat at her unexpected response.
My heartbeat was pounding noisily, and I became worried.
I wonder if my heart can withstand living together with Renge?
