Chapter 10: Archery
The sun was perceived through the curtains of the room, projecting a pale glow on the disorderly sheets. I slowly opened my eyes, my body still numbed by the excesses of the night. A heavy silence reigned in the room.
I turned my head towards the side of the bed where Selene should have been. Empty. The sheets were cold.
I let out a bitter little laugh.
"Not surprising ... "
Straightening up, I put a hand in my ruffled hair before taking a look around the room. No sign of his business, not even a word left behind. She left like a shadow in the night.
I stretched, then got up, mechanically looking for my wallet on the bedside table. By opening it, a feeling of emptiness struck me immediately.
'Zero'. Not a single damn gold coin.
I remained motionless for a few seconds, fixing the desperately empty bottom of my purse.
"This bitch really doubted me ..."
I gave a sigh before laughing. It was my kind to come across a woman as cunning as I am.
Putting on my Omni charm cape, I left the room and went down the stairs of the hostel. The innkeeper, a big man with a shaggy mustache, gave me a look while wiping a drink.
"Hailed night, huh?"
"Let's say that I was plucked like a pigeon."
He laughed, shaking his head.
"It happens to the best."
Ignoring his mocking tone, I pushed the door and released in the lively street of the Cité des Plaisirs. The hot air of the morning was loaded with spice of spice and cheap perfume.
I was walking quietly, my cape floating slightly behind me. The looks turned on my way, especially those of women. Some smiled at me, others threw me suggestive. The effect of the cape was still as effective.
But this time, I no longer had a single piece in my pocket.
"Well ... I will have to find a way to recover money."
A smirk appeared on my face. Fortunately, I knew some quick methods to get a fortune ...
I scrolled my interface while walking, looking for a quick quest to replenish my scholarship. I could not stay without a penny in my pocket in the city of pleasures, a place where gold dictated the laws.
After a few seconds of research, a quest for a relationship drew my attention:
「Relationship quest: the perfect shooting challenge」
「Description: A traveling game organizer is looking for an opponent to face his champion in an archery test.」
「Reward: 10,000 gold coins if you beat the champion.」
「Difficulty: average.」
「Restrictions: No magic equipment authorized.」
"An address game? Interesting."
I validated the quest, and my interface indicated the direction of the place where the event was held.
A few minutes later, I arrived in a large crowded square, where a crowd spoke around a makeshift platform. A man with a jovial look, wearing a feathered hat, exclaimed in a loud voice to attract spectators:
"Come, come! Attend the confrontation of the century! Who will dare to challenge our champion, the legendary shooter Arvis the pierce heart ?"
The crowd whispered with excitement while the so-called champion, a tall and muscular man with a finely decorated arc, advanced under the cheers.
I smile in the corner.
"Ten thousand pieces in a simple challenge? Too easy."
Advantage towards the stage, I raised one hand.
"I take up the challenge."
The looks turned to me, and the organizer attracted me with an intrigued smile.
"Oh oh! A new challenger? Alright ! But know that our champion has never lost a single duel!"
"That's what we're going to see."
I went up on the platform, ready to crush this arvis and leave with my reward.
The organizer, still so exuberant, raised his arms to attract the attention of the crowd.
"Ladies and gentlemen, here are the rules of this precision duel!"
He appointed a series of targets arranged at different distances on the ground.
"Each shooter will have three arrows to try to score the most points."
The targets are classified by difficulty:
. Near target (20 meters): 10 points
. Average target (50 meters): 30 points
. Distant target (100 meters): 50 points
. Mobile target (moving at 75 meters): 70 points
. Target tiny (150 meters): 100 points
"The winner will be the one who accumulates the most points in three shots. No magic or external improvement are allowed. Only your skill will decide the winner! "
The crowd applauds loudly.
I crossed my arms while listening to the rules, analyzing the options. Only three shots ...
"The champion Arvis begins! announced the organizer."
The man with the protruding muscles advanced, ignited the crowd with a gesture and grabbed his bow. He set off his first arrow on the average target, obtaining 30 points without difficulty.
"Not bad."
He then visited the mobile target, adjusted his shot according to the trip and achieved a perfect blow. The arrow split the air and touched in the center.
"70 points!"
The crowd exults.
Arvis smiles with confidence, before targeting the tiny target at 150 meters. He pulled, but this time, his arrow deviated slightly downwind and touched the edge of the target.
"40 points instead of 100! "
Total: 140 points.
I smile in the corner.
"In my turn."
The crowd stared at me with curiosity. No one knew me here, but it was going to change quickly.
I took the arc that was stretched, examining it for a moment. Basic equipment, well balanced, but far from being optimal.
"Never mind."
I looked up at the targets and thought about the best approach. A single perfect shot would be enough to crush this ridiculous score.
The tension was at its height. It was time to show these amateurs what a real sniper was.
I grab the bow and have a long inspiration.
The whispers in the crowd intensified. Some sought when I saw my appearance relaxed, others thought I was a novice.
"They will quickly be disillusioned."
I raised my bow and bandai the rope with an almost mechanical fluidity. My gaze swept the targets.
First shot: Mobile target (70 points).
I let go of the arrow without even taking the time to calculate. She split the air and reached her center at the perfect time.
The crowd pushed an exclamation of surprise.
Second shot: tiny target (100 points).
Most of a challenge. Child's game for me.
I released the rope and the arrow disappeared almost instantly, reaching the target with surgical precision.
Spectators appear for a moment before exploding in cheers.
I took my time for the third shot. Rather than targeting an ordinary target, my gaze landed on a flickering candle at the top of a platform, far beyond the official targets.
I smiled and released the arrow.
She split the air with astounding speed and turned off the flame without touching the candle.
Total silence.
The organizer spread his eyes.
"This guy is not human ..."
The public exploded in ovations.
"We have a new champion!"
I recovered my reward without a word and be signed for the organizer to follow me away.
We moved away from the crowd to a discreet alley. The man, still in shock, gave me a worried look.
"What do you want?"
I won against a wall, calmly observing his tense face.
"Darius Venmorm."
The organizer paved slightly.
"Do you want to die or what?"
I tightened the bag bag in my hand.
"I ask a question. Where is it?"
The man hesitated, taking a look around him as if he feared being heard.
Then he breathed in a low voice:
"In the north district, in a villa protected by mercenaries. But approaching him is to sign your death stop ..."
A cold smile took shape on my face.
"That's what we'll see."
